Pause Button Cafe opens in Coomera.

Like Adam Sandler in the film Click, we sometimes wish we could get our hands on a universal remote that allows us to press pause on life once in a while. At Pause Button Cafe, that idea isn’t just a cute concept, it’s the entire experience.

Behind the new opening are husband-and-wife duo Stanley Lam and Sennie Tee, the team who’ve spent the past 2.5 years building a loyal following at Humble Cafe in Southport. Now, they’ve pressed play on a second venue, bringing their community forward approach to Coomera, an area they saw as missing that important mix of good food, good drinks and genuine connection.

This isn’t about fast food or QR-code dining. Stanley and Sennie are clear on that. With over a decade in Australia’s hospitality scene, Sennie as a head barista and cafe manager, Stanley having worked as Head Chef at Oi Izakaya and Sous Chef at Elk Espresso, they’ve shaped a space built on table service and real conversations.

Designed from scratch with OJ Thompson, the cafe leans into bright, bold and playful, inspired by Dreamworld nearby. Think purple ceilings, a sunshine-yellow tiled bar, and pops of colour throughout. There’s room for around 50 guests, indoor and outdoor seating, it’s dog-friendly, walk-in only and yes, there’s plenty of parking (a small miracle in itself).

Even the small details have a story. The colourful ceramics come from Loveramics, inspired by Hong Kong’s Choi Hung Estate, a subtle tribute to Stanley’s upbringing.

Now, onto the menu, because this is where things really stop you in your tracks.

Chef Stanley’s fusion brunch lineup is designed to look good on your insta feed but deliver on flavour first.

The Spicy Honey Chicken Waffle hits that sweet-heat balance with crispy fried chicken, house-made Belgian waffle, honey chilli sauce, pickled daikon and yuzu-dressed rocket.

The Octopus Nduja Scramble is far from your standard brunch plate, layering nduja butter, tender octopus, scrambled eggs, dill yoghurt and curry leaves on sourdough.

On the sweeter side, the Berry Sweet Waffle goes all in with blueberry ice cream, purple sweet potato meringue, fresh fruit, syrup and honey oat crumbs. It’s OTT and OMG delicious.

Coffee comes courtesy of Allpress Espresso, and the signature sips lean into the fun. The Sunrise Brew is their take on a viral Mont Blanc that blends cold brew with vanilla, orange zest, cinnamon and an orange cream cloud.

The Violet Po-taro Matcha arrives topped with a sweet potato and taro cream cloud. Then there’s the Piña Co Brew, layered with coconut syrup, coconut water and pineapple cream, crowned with dried pineapple.

Want to really hit pause? The boozy brunch lineup steps in. A Pink Lychee Mist of pink gin, grenadine, lychee coconut water or a Limoncello Spritz is designed to shift the mood. So, fire up the group chat, gather the girls and let time stop for a long overdue catch up.

6 Gold Coast spots to get your waffle fix

We like them a waffle lot.

Waffles at Oh My, Waffle, Burleigh (image supplied)
Waffles at Oh My, Waffle, Burleigh (image supplied)

Waffles. Part breakfast, part dessert – our only criticism is that we want to see more of them in and around our face.

A dish that lived in the shadow of pancakes for far too long, thankfully tides are changing for this once underrated brunch treat. Hailing from Belgium and extremely popular in the US, these days, the crispy, lattice-like slabs are a familiar and welcome sight on our cafe circuit – in both sweet and savoury form.

When you’re craving golden, grill-forged goodies, here are six of the best places on the Coast to get your waffle fix. Pass the syrup!

BUBBO Dessert Waffles (image supplied)
BUBBO Dessert Waffles (image supplied)

Bubbo Dessert
As if straight from the streets of Hong Kong and into our hungry gobs, Bubbo Dessert has got our bubble waffle hook-up. If you’re yet to get a taste of this traditional street-style snack, thankfully you don’t have to go far to do so. To-ing and fro-ing between markets across Brisbane and the Coast – from 5-9pm every Friday & Saturday, you can find the Bubbo crew slinging their waffly wares out of their food trailer at the Dreamworld Night Markets. What better way to say ‘hello weekend’ thank with one of these fluffy yet crisp bad bois, rolled into a cone and stuffed with all the things dessert dreams are made of.
Where: Dreamworld Pkwy, Coomera

Cardamom Pod Brickworks
Known for all things nutritious and delicious – whether you’re in the mood for sweet or savoury, Cardamom Pod has got waffle cravings covered. Among their always satisfying selection of vegetarian treats, our stalwart herbivore hook-up also whips up a pretty mean weekend waffle special that’s well worth cancelling plans to get a taste of. Start your day with an Indian Street Food Waffle served with all the trimmings, or go all out with the dessert style Crispy Waffle, served with banana, biscoff caramel and boba espresso ice cream. YUM.

Cheeky Waffles
If you’re not yet acquainted with the debaucherous little dessert destination known as Cheeky Waffle, keep an open mind – and an even wider mouth. More than just an out of the ‘box’ presentation, the saucy waffles this novelty nosher serves up are OMG good. Pick your preferred shape, then have it slathered in toppings like caramel chocolate and Biscoff crumb. You might need some solid willy-power to stop at one.

Elk Espresso
We just can’t elk ourselves when it comes to whatever this Broadbeach fave is whipping up. The nosh, coffee and service never misses, but the waffles will always have a special place in our heart and tums. With variations like Fried Chicken, Violet Crumble and Matcha & Black Sesame gracing the seasonal menu at one point another, you’d batter believe the obsession only continues to grow (at a similar rate to our sweatpants collection… weird.) There’s a reason why Gold Coasters have been flocking to this one for over a decade… and the waffles rank pretty highly #We’reWeak

Which means, along with boozy shakes, spiders and 12+ pancake flavours, you can get your fix of butter-drenched Belgian Waffles almost anytime you like.
