Your Gold Coast brewery checklist

Black Hops ||

The craft beer scene has exploded on the Gold Coast of late and, hooray, local breweries have been popping up all over the place. Not to mention Friday August 7th is International Beer Day, so that’s the perfect way to ring in the weekend.

In honour of that and epic local brews, here are the top ten breweries you should make a date with RIGHT NOW.

Burleigh Brewing Co.
Balance, character and soul, the Burleigh Brewing Co. ethos says it all. They’ve won plenty of gold medals at the World Beer Championships (which sounds like the most fun night of all time) and we can confirm they know what’s up when it comes to creating exceptional brews. At the moment, the team are just doing takeaways to help support the local venues pouring their beers, but never fear, there are many across the Coast doing that you can pop into. It’s clear to see why Burleigh Brewing Co. are extremely loved by locals and visitors alike.
Where: 2 Ern Harley Drive, Burleigh Heads

Black Hops Brewing
It’s all about three guys perfecting the art of craft beer and sharing all their secrets along the way. Black Hops quickly became a local favourite and have recently released one of the best Pale Ale’s on the market. Head in to grab some takeaways or perch at the bar for a chat, it’s all good. Their spacious northern venue opened a little while ago so they could brew even more delicious goods, there are food trucks up there on weekends AND you can take a tour of the brewery. So fun.
Where: 15 Gardenia Grove, Burleigh Heads and 671 Pine Ridge Road, Biggera Waters

Balter Brewing Company
Who knew a beer tin could look so good? The name Balter means the sense of enjoyment you get from doing something you love, whether you’re good at it or not…perfect. Balter HQ is a brewery with an open door policy. You can tour the facility, taste the beers and enjoy special events, great music and food vans. There’s an outdoor area complete with umbrellas and fairy lights and it’s pretty much all our favourite things in one spot. We’re big fans of Captain Sensible, can’t relate but man is it tasty.

Fortitude Brewing Company
Brewed onsite in the Gold Coast hinterland, Fortitude Brewing is one of Australia’s most-loved breweries and home to our first beer sommelier, Ian Watson. The team certainly have the art of beer making down pat with over 15 beers on their roster! Make a day of your visit to the mountain and enjoy a tasting paddle or two with a spot of lunch. You’ll love them so much you’ll want to take a few home with you too. Get a free beer here.
Where: 165 Long Road, Eagle Heights

Aardvark & Arrow Brewery
A microbrewery on the Coast set to change the way you think about small batch brewing. Aardvark & Arrow supply chemical and preservative free beer and cider in a relaxing atmosphere that will leave you wanting to return sooner rather than later. There’s plenty of variety so head down and visit the team for a boutique beer experience with a difference.
Where: 13 John Duncan Court, Varsity Lakes

Pickled Pig Brewery
Technically this one’s in NSW but it’s definitely worth a mention. The family owned and operated, independent brewery offers premium handcrafted beer, chemical and preservative free at a great price (they even let you fill your own bottles)! Make sure you try their famous alcoholic ginger beer, it’s way too good. Brewery tours and tastings also available.
Where: 1/2 Industry Drive, Tweed Heads South

Lost Palms (image supplied)

Lost Palms Brewing
The Miami good time venue with the explosive pink paint job is probably about to become your new favourite place thanks to the boys at Lost Palms. They’ve got a sweet outdoor area to pull up a seat complete with a basketball hoop and rotating food trucks to fill your belly. Their beers are quite unique, think beetroot flavoured and a sour that’ll knock your socks off. Plus it’s simply oozing with good vibes all of the time. If you’re a fan of seltzer (which we know isn’t beer), these guys do a peach version that’s the best around.
Where: 11 Oak Avenue, Miami

The Lucky Squire
The newest of the bunch is part of a group of venues you’ve no doubt heard of. It’s the James Squire family and The Lucky Squire is our very own Gold Coast version. Having only opened a few months ago, the newbie can be found at The Oracle and it’s two stories of microbrewery goodness. There are two bars pouring an array of sips including the entire James Squire range and if you’re after a feed, there’s tasty dishes like wood-fired steaks and double cheeseburgers that should do the trick. Head down for an arvo session.
Where: 3 Oracle Boulevard, Broadbeach

Laughing Lizard Brewery
The crew at Laughing Lizard made over 150 different beers, all of which boast no chemicals and no preservatives (which equals no hangover, right?) and they’ve even got a gluten free option. The brewery itself is a three for one deal including the micro brewery, a home brew and spirit shop and the all-important party keg hire! Let the good times roll.
Where: 27 Sinclair Street, Arundel

Gold Coast Brewery
If it’s range you’re after, look no further, the Gold Coast Brewery has a huge range of beers on offer including premium options, heavy duty types, ciders and ginger beers. All of the very best things to get you through the rest of the year. Which, let’s face it, is probably going to call for alot of beer.
Where: 6/4 Indy Court, Nerang

Keep an eye out for Surfers Paradise’ frothy new brewery, coming in late 2020 and there’s a couple of others in the works too.

Happy sipping!

Distil your very own bottle of gin at Granddad Jack’s

It seems quite likely that at some point in your life, you’ve considered making your own spirits. Same. But without a little expert knowledge, the right gear and a few spare hours, it’s probably always been a little too hard. Until now that is Gold Coasters.

The good folks at Granddad Jack’s Craft Distillery are offering you the opportunity to do exactly that, thanks to a distillery experience that is without a doubt, one of the best things you’ll ever do.

Particularly because at the end of the night, you get to take home a bottle of gin you whipped up with your very own hands, properly and under the supervision of people who know a thing or two about making an exceptional sip. It’s the first of its’ kind on the Gold Coast and led by the most experienced gin distillers our fair city has to offer.

Let’s start from the beginning though because the entire experience is a good time. Granddad Jack’s Craft Distillery has been creating their very own brand of exceptional gin for a few years now and in mid-2019, decided they’d share what they’ve learned with the people (us) and so making your own gin at their Miami space became a new thing.

The experience begins with a tour of the distillery (gin and tonic in hand) where you’ll learn about the man behind it all, Granddad Jack. What entrepreneurial ventures he tried to keep his family farm afloat, the process of building the industrial-style space with ALL recycled materials, how they’ve challenged craft culture and rules in Australian distilling (a thing or two passed down through generations), you’ll also see a few of Granddad Jack’s mementos and the stories behind his love of each.

Luke (Granddad Jack’s great-grandson) will take you through the distilling process and then you’ll take a seat to sample a few different types of gin, including some made right there at the distillery. After that, it’s time for a spot of science.

There are six spots at the bench, each set with a mini 2L copper still and all of the tools you’ll need to create your very own bottle of gin. You’ll be taken through the process and then you get to head over and choose the botanicals that will make up the taste of your gin.

Just a heads up, lemongrass, lemon rind and rosehip are a winning combination but feel free to disregard if you don’t like winning.

You’ll then go through the next critical steps in making the best gin ever, label and wax your bottle, eat some dinner (burgers and nachos, yes please) from Pretty Handsome down the road and then sample each other’s gins to crown the winner of the night.

The entire experience is absolutely value-packed, not only do you get so much knowledge from a team who knows exactly what’s up when it comes to creating epic gins, you also get plenty of drinks throughout the night, dinner, a bottle of gin to take home and maybe a new friend or three.

Not to mention the bragging rights when you get to tell everyone you made your own bottle of gin.

Tickets are $230 each and spots book out super quick so get on that ASAP. You can also purchase a gift voucher for the gin-lover in your life.

LOCATION: 43 Lemana Lane, Miami
WHEN: Wednesday’s at 6pm

Buy booze direct from these Gold Coast breweries and distilleries

Right, so we’re in isolation, chatting to our friends via video, baking copious amounts of banana bread and trying not to be bored but alas, being bored. Enter alcohol, a necessary addition to group chats (cheersing the screen is a good time) and the perfect companion to a bit of midday baking. What would we do without it?

You know what the best kind of alcohol is? Gold Coast alcohol. Made by local legends who are crafting the absolute goods when it comes to a tasty drop.

Since we’re all about supporting local and we know you are too, we comprised a list of local breweries and distilleries from whom you can purchase your iso alcohol direct, cutting out the middle man and giving them all a helping hand in this ridiculous time.

Here they are, get drinking (in moderation obvs).

Black Hops
The lads at Black Hops have two breweries on the Gold Coast, one in Burleigh Heads and one at Biggera Waters and both slinging takeaway cans for your sipping pleasure. They’ve got quite the array of beers available including Pink Mist (our fave) and the recently re-released Beach House. Not matter your preference, they’ve got you covered.
Where: 5 Gardenia Grove, Burleigh Heads and 671 Pine Ridge Road, Biggera Waters

Balter Brewing
As you’d expect the Balter boys are on the bandwagon serving up their beloved brews in the form of cans (of course) but also as long necks in singles or three packs. Which is a truly Aussie thing to do. All your Balter favourites are on offer and they can all be delivered should you not want/be able to get to the brewery. We’re big fans of all Balter’s beers and particularly love their branding. Buy yourself a long neck or three and check out what they’ve done with the paper bag. Too good.
Where: 14 Traders Way, Currumbin

Burleigh Brewing
The legends at Burleigh Brewing are makers of really, very excellent beer in a variety of flavours that we love equally. Big Head in particular is carb free, which is very handy at a time when we eat a lot and don’t get out much. You know what the greatest thing about Burleigh Brewing is right now though? They’re delivering across the Coast. Simply order online and get your goods dropped right at your door. Perfection.
Where: 2 Ern Harley Drive, Burleigh Heads

Mt Tamborine Distillery
Need some fancy, delicious liqueurs to sip on while you’re doing all that indoor stuff? Same. Mt Tamborine Distillery has you covered with their very extensive range. Jaffa, Choc Mint, Choc Chilli perhaps? They’ve also got a life changing Limoncello and spirits too, so pretty much everything you could possibly need. Add some of their new hand sanitiser to the mix and that’s you covered for the next week or so. Grab some from the tasting room if you live up that way or get it shipped directly to you.
Where: 10 Macdonnell Road, Tamborine North

Lost Palms Brewing
The pretty pink brewery has created a little takeaway window on site and from it they are selling all of their epic brews including the recently released Peach Hard Seltzer which we can tell you (from Hottest 100 day experience) is a taste sensation. It’s also low in calories, carbs and sugar making it pretty much good for you and our new fave thing. They also have many other delicious types that you should sample ASAP.
Where: 11 Oak Ave, Miami

Granddad Jacks
The Miami crew are selling their delicious, delicious gin out of the distillery on Lemana Lane and there are a few to choose from in varying degrees of strength. There’s Two Pencils (our fave), 65 Miles (navy strength, fun) and Greenhouse, a botanical treat. They’ve also created their very own hand sanitiser because they’re clever like that, so you can pick up all the necessities in one go. Love.
Where: 45 Lemana Lane, Miami

Fortitude Brewing
Up at Tamborine Mountain, Fortitude Brewing are still making their tasty tipples for your sampling pleasure. They’ve got many a type of beer to choose from including your regular Pale Ale and Lager faves plus their very own ginger beer, which is one of the best around. If you’re up that way, pop through their new makeshift drive-thru and grab yourself a couple to take home and enjoy. Always a pleasure at Fortitude Brewing.
Where: 165 Long Road, Mount Tamborine

Happy sipping friends.
