I got 94 problems but my matcha ain’t one of them

Palm Beach’s ’94 is stealing hearts (and sips).

If you’ve been ‘oat’ and about in Palm Beach lately, you may have noticed a fresh new café making waves, and it’s got matcha lovers and coffee fiends in a frenzy.

Enter ’94, the brainchild of Ahmet Taskin, a man who took his love of matcha and morning munches and is turning it into the community hub to end all community hubs.

Since opening its doors at the end of February, ’94 has already set itself apart from the pack. Visually, it blends Japanese café influences (a nod to their – and our – matcha obsession) with a vintage bar aesthetic, creating a warm, inviting atmosphere where you can park yourself for hours. Whether you’re sipping a chai matcha on the outdoor seating or cozying up inside with a dark blanc, the experience is as good as the menu.

And speaking of the menu, let’s talk drinks. Forget mass-produced syrups and artificial nonsense – ’94 makes all their syrups in-house. The result? Completely original, preservative-free, flavour-packed creations like their signature Salted Caramel Matcha, Dark Blanc, Chai Matcha, and Strawberry and Blueberry Matcha (made from fresh fruit, thank you very much). They’re also serving up Open Toasts and Toasties, Homemade Banana Bread and Muffins, and more so you can muncha while you matcha.

But what truly sets ’94 apart isn’t just the food and drinks – it’s the people, with Ahmet and his team building a loyal community from the ground up. The name itself, ’94, isn’t just a nod to a year – it’s a generation, a movement, a gathering place for anyone looking to connect and caffeinate.

Pre ’94, marketgoers will already be familiar with Ahmet’s eats and sips sorcery through Oatopia, the prequal to his latest venture. The humble oat-based breakfast stall, which also sold matcha sourced straight from the motherland, quickly acquired a stage-five-clinger following. Locals wanted a bricks and mortar spot that served up his magnificent matcha on the reg so in true entrepreneurial fashion, Ahmet delivered.

The end goal for ‘94 is not just to be a meeting point for parched and peckish locals, but basically to become the social heartbeat of Palmy. Besides the obvious (sensational sips and great grub), forward-thinking Ahmet has plans to start a running club, swimming club, and more. You name it – he and team will probably club it.

So how qualified is Ahmet to achieve such an ambitious feat? Very. With six years of hospitality experience (four of those spent perfecting his coffee craft), plus a Master’s Degree in Marketing focusing on food waste and green marketing, he was born for this. But credit where it’s due as his wife also played a strategic role in the making of ’94 (behind every great man….). After Ahmet left his last gig, she encouraged him not to find another job and yes, you read that right. She wanted him to focus his energy entirely on launching his own biz and on behalf of the GC, we salute you.

So, if you haven’t already, get yourself to ’94 and experience it for yourself. Whether you’re after a mother of a matcha, killer cup of coffee, bite to eat, or just a natter with a fellow friendly local, one thing’s for sure – you’ll be back. And probably joining a club while you’re at it.

Coffee and connection

Sonder, Broadbeach (Image: © 2024 Inside Gold Coast)

Fire up the group chat for a catch-up! Broadbeach has a new go-to spot for coffee lovers and those who love a chat. It’s called Sonder, a café where sipping, snacking and sharing stories are all part of the experience.

Sonder, Broadbeach (Image: © 2024 Inside Gold Coast)

The masterminds behind Sonder, Marc Nanfro and Michael Romeo, set out to create more than a café – they wanted a space where locals could gather, share a meal and perhaps even spark up a conversation with a fellow coffee enthusiast.

Marc said, “The word Sonder comes from a book The Dictionary of Obscure Sorrows. It is the realisation that everyone has their own story. We want our customers to come in, relax, enjoy a coffee, good food and meet other people from different walks of life.”

Marc and Michael’s own story is one of friendship, creativity and craftsmanship that began over a decade ago.

Back then, they were carpenters crafting furniture. Fast forward a few years, and Marc traded his toolbox for coffee beans, opening his first café in Melbourne’s northern suburbs. Six years later, he’s brought his vision to the Gold Coast, teaming up with Michael again to build Sonder.

And when we say build, we mean it. From floor layouts to the mid-century modern-meets-luxury interiors, Marc and Michael designed and constructed every inch of the space themselves.

Step inside, and let the crackle of vinyl records set the tone. The cosy lounge area with plush seating and wooden accents invites you to sink into vintage vibes while the dog-friendly outdoor area is perfect for soaking up Broadbeach’s vibrant atmosphere on a hot summer day.

It’s not just the setting that tells a story, though – it’s the menu. Head Chef Liye Sakuma has whipped up a lineup that’s equal parts comfort and creativity.

Start your day with a Breakfast Bagel loaded with scrambled egg, bacon, hash, tasty cheese, rocket and chilli jam.

For the sweet tooth there’s the Fresh Fruit Bagel featuring a blueberry bagel topped with ricotta, fresh strawberries, blueberries and honey. It’s summer on a plate.

For those seeking decadence, the Truffle Cheese Toastie oozing with cheddar, mozzarella, tasty cheese and black truffle is irresistible.

Craving something heartier? Buddy’s Burger Toastie, named after Marc’s Melbourne cafe, is packed with a smashed burger patty, pickles, tasty cheese and signature buddy sauce. Add a side of hot honey halloumi fries and you’ll have everyone coming over to your table for a chat (and a chip)!

With the owners hailing from Melbourne, you know the coffee will be top notch. Toby’s Estate is the coffee of choice and it’s yours however you choose to sip it. If you’re feeling adventurous, ask the barista for a Mont Blanc – it’s a specialty coffee made with filter coffee, sugar syrup, fresh cream, nutmeg and orange zest.

Whether it’s your first visit or your fifth, Sonder invites you to sip, savour the moment and share a story or two.

Smooth, rich in umami, and completely free of bitterness, it offers a deep, complex flavour profile unlike any other. What truly sets Maison Koko apart is the exclusivity of their products. While the global demand for matcha has led to widespread shortages, Maison Koko enjoys VIP access to rare, single cultivars typically unavailable to most brands. This commitment to rarity has fostered an impressive customer loyalty rate, with over 35% of customers returning for more and more than 20% subscribing to regular deliveries—some even purchasing weekly.

It’s an expensive practice, but one Maison Koko embraces to offer nothing but the best. They even guarantee that no matcha leaves their facility if it’s older than four weeks—proof of their unwavering commitment to quality.
