Crepes are always a good idea

Bon appétit, Burleigh! The brunch scene just became très chic with the arrival of Choubidou Cafe, a new French-inspired spot within the Hibiscus Haven block. Pronounced shoo-bee-doo, the playful name translates to cutie pie in French and honestly, there’s no better way to describe this charming newcomer.

Behind the new spot are Ammish Adu and Javier Moreno, the duo also at the helm of Le Jardin in Main Beach. Ammish and Javier first worked together at Le Jardin before becoming close friends, eventually deciding to open a second venue together when the opportunity arose.

“We are two very fun loving, energetic people and love working together. We both enjoy the challenge of creating something beautiful, not just for us, but for our staff and our community.”

For Javier, who also leads the kitchen as head chef, Choubidou offered the chance to expand on the French-inspired flavours locals already fell in love with at Le Jardin. For Ammish, it was about finding the right fit for the next chapter. And Burleigh, with its thriving cafe culture and loyal locals, ticked every box.

Opening its doors in the former Common Ground space, Choubidou Cafe feels like a little pocket of Paris tucked into the Gold Coast. Lush greenery softens every corner, while sunlight spills across both the indoor and outdoor dining spaces. Seating around 70 people, outside is where the charm really shines, with locals basking in the morning sun over coffee and crepes. Equal parts garden cafe, Parisian bistro and Burleigh brunch spot.

On the menu, French-inspired comfort food takes centre stage.

Just like Le Jardin, the go-to favourites are the crepes. Sweet options include the Raspberry Cheesecake crepe layered with raspberry compote, cheesecake filling and crushed Biscoff. Savoury fans can order Le Parisian, packed with sautéed mushroom and tomato, Parisian ham, French herbs, shredded cheddar and a fried egg.

Next, the Mediterranean omelette loads up on sous vide chicken, double smoked bacon, Spanish onion, wilted spinach, olives and aioli, while Le Poulailler levels up an Eggs Benedict with buttermilk fried chicken, local avocado, wilted spinach and house hollandaise.

The pièce de résistance is the signature Steak Frites, bringing classic French bistro vibes with a scotch fillet, truffle fries and a secret five-herb sauce. Diners can even swap the plate for a warm baguette version because there’s nothing more iconic than a crusty loaf of French bread.

Drinks lean equally indulgent with specialty coffee, teas and juices as well as Canned Cold Foams with flavours like Ferrero Rocher, salted caramel and vanilla.

Then there’s the Choubidou Parisienne hot chocolate, a thick drinking chocolate topped with whipped cream and strawberries that taste less like a beverage and more like dessert.

Whether you’re a foodie, a Francophile or just someone craving the perfect crepe, grab your boo and head to Choubidou Cafe.

The Laneway you need to know about

Elevated comfort eats await at The Laneway in Burleigh.

The Laneway, Burleigh Heads (Image: © 2026 Inside Gold Coast)

If your dream dining scenario involves a tucked-away wine bar, golden hour cocktails and a table full of carbs, Burleigh just delivered. Sliding into the former home of JFK Woodfired Kitchen & Bar, The Laneway has officially opened and it is already giving strong local favourite energy.

Designed to feel like an extension of the Burleigh lifestyle, The Laneway leans into earthy tones, soft textures and breezy indoor-outdoor dining. It is warm, relaxed and effortlessly cool. The kind of place you settle into for a quick bite and somehow leave hours later.

The Laneway, Burleigh Heads (Image: © 2026 Inside Gold Coast)

Behind the venue is Shonel Alloway, the name behind Nobby’s favourite The Arc, alongside Head Chef Jefferson King Koi of The Arc and Mr Nobby Beach. Together, they have created a space that feels polished but never pretentious. Elevated without the white tablecloth vibes.

The menu brings together modern Australian with a little Italian influence, and it is built for sharing. Think plates across the table, a bit of everything and zero regrets when you realise you have ordered far too much. Honestly, there are worse problems to have.

The Laneway, Burleigh Heads (Image: © 2026 Inside Gold Coast)

To start, the share plates are a no-brainer. The Salmon Crudo comes dressed in citrus dill vinaigrette with pickled baby onion and fennel. The king prawns arrive sizzling in lemon beurre blanc. Then there is the truffle mushroom arancini which deserves your full attention. The Seared Scallops with pea puree, yuzu butter and hazelnut praline are another standout. Order them. Thank us later.

Moving into mains, the Crispy Skin Pork Belly is a must. Served with seeded mustard crème, rocket, parmesan and glazed cranberries finished with fig vincotto, it hits that perfect balance of rich and fresh. The 200g eye fillet is another hero, paired with prosciutto wrapped beans, tomato capsicum relish, smoked potato gateau and juniper jus. It is giving special occasion, even if you are just there for a casual midweek dinner.

Pasta lovers, you are in very good hands. There is a creamy Carbonara, a prawn packed Gamberi linguine, a rich Laneway Bolognese and a truffle heavy Pasta Al Funghi with sage beurre noisette and manchego. Basically, carbs on carbs in the best possible way.

Then there is the pizza lineup. All the classics are covered, alongside signature creations like The Laneway pizza loaded with king prawns, calabrese salami, jalapeños, feta and mushrooms. It is bold, a little chaotic and absolutely delicious.

To wash it all down, the cocktail list is calling. The Burleigh in Bloom is already a crowd favourite, blending vodka, watermelon liqueur, rose syrup, watermelon juice and lime into something dangerously easy to drink. One will likely turn into two.

If you are more of an afternoon session type, you are sorted. Sunset Hours run from 2pm to 5pm, Wednesday through Sunday. It is basically an open invitation to knock off early and lean into those long, lazy Burleigh afternoons.

The Laneway, Burleigh Heads (Image: © 2026 Inside Gold Coast)
The Laneway, Burleigh Heads (Image: © 2026 Inside Gold Coast)

What we love most about The Laneway is that it does not feel like a shiny new opening trying too hard. It already feels lived in. Like the kind of neighbourhood spot that has been around for years, filled with locals, good food and even better energy.

Safe to say, we are already planning our next visit. And yes, we will be ordering the arancini again.

Your cheat sheet to classic bistro bliss.

Kirra Beach House, Kirra (image supplied)
Kirra Beach House, Kirra (image supplied)

If there’s one dish that screams treat yourself (with a side of fries), it’s steak frites. We’re talking juicy, perfectly cooked steak, a pile of golden, crispy chips and zero intention of sharing. It’s rich, it’s comforting, it’s a little bit fancy but still gives big “elastic waistbands welcome” energy. Whether you’re planning a cheeky midweek splurge, a flirty Friday date night or a catch-up that revolves entirely around something dangerously delicious, the Gold Coast delivers the goods (obviously). Here’s where to chase down the coast’s most crave-worthy steak frites.
