Australian and Indian eats collide in Coolangatta.
Australian and Indian eats collide in Coolangatta.
When a place is called Mojo, you just know it’s going to have some serious flavour. Not just on the plate, but in the vibe, the people, and yes – most importantly – in the margaritas.
Say namaste to Coolangatta’s newest culinary crush, Mojo, which officially opened its dahl-licious doors in October 2024, in the spot where Rockleigh once stood. With power couple Addy and Sukh at the helm, they’re serving up breakfast and lunch – both heroing different cuisines – and it’s giving split personality in the best possible way.
Brekky is a nod to the Aussie classics and whether you’re on Team Avo or prefer a Big Brekkie loaded up like a Bunnings snag on a Saturday, Mojo brings the goods. By lunchtime, Mojo flips the script with modern Indian street food inspired dishes, leaning heavily into Addy’s heritage.
The menu is filled with nosh crafted from scratch (yes, even the curry sauces) and recipes straight from the master herself: Addy’s mum, a culinary legend with over 30 years under her apron. Everything at Mojo is fresh, local, and made with so much love you can practically taste the backstory. And speaking of, it’s a good one.
Sukh and Addy landed in Australia with two suitcases and a dream, and somehow went from split shifts to soulmates-slash-business-partners building an empire, one cup of house-blended chai at a time.
Addy, who is also Head Chef, has been in the game for over a decade. She cut her teeth in Sydney cafés and went on to sharpen those culinary chops at iconic spots like Palazzo Versace before co-launching Karma Indian in Tweed Heads (aka the highest-rated Indian restaurant in the region #HumbleBrag).
Meanwhile, Sukh – the engine room of the operation – is the host with the most, slinging good vibes with every drink and dish. He’s worked everywhere from the UK to India, making every customer feel like they’re the only customer.
Moving on to the space, the venue has character, comfort, and just enough Cooly cool factor to make you linger a little (or a lot) longer. You can never go wrong with a white weatherboard exterior, this one paired with bold green doors and matchy matchy window frames. Inside it feels like a warm hug, with timber floors and a feature wall with their iconic sun-meets-moon symbol in black contrasting beautifully against the white-wash background. Much of the fit-out is a DIY labour of love, adding to it’s undeniable charm.
Unpacking the eats, we’re salivating over both menus. For AM, we’re here for the Big Breakky, with two eggs, bacon, sausage, beans, avocado, hash browns, mushrooms, spinach, grilled tomato, halloumi and toast, paired with one of their cracking coffees. For lunch, their signature Masala Dosa Mojo Bowl; a thin savoury crepe made with fermented rice flour served with dhal and coconut chutney, is tikka-lin our fancy. And why not grab a Kathi Roll to share, a thin crispy and flaky roti topped with your choice of chicken, lamb or paneer, with onion, tomato salad and mint yoghurt, which just screams “curry up and get in my belly.”
If you’re the kind of person who judges a venue by its cocktails (no shame), the Mojo Mango Margarita is ‘cumin’ in hot! Tropical, tangy, and dangerously sippable, plan ahead and book an Uber.
Friends, whether you’re chasing a classic bacon and egg roll in the morning or a dumpling dream in the arvo, this is where your appetite – and your, ahem, mojo – come to life.
