Who doesn’t love it when one space houses two separate eating experiences that are same same but different. This may sound mildly cryptic but stay with us because by “same same”, we mean both serve healthy eats to make your tummies and tastebuds sing in unison. And by “different”, we mean one is a new generation food store and eatery, and the other a gluten free/dairy free/coeliac friendly fish and chips market. Yes, we’re talking about the trailblazing Urban Eatery & Café and Urban Fish Market, located side-by-side in the heart of Broadbeach. This nutrition-rich, environmentally conscious, and highly convenient power couple are changing up the GC food game one bite (or sip) at a time.

Let’s start with Urban Eatery & Café, which offers a healthy balance of sustainable, delicious, and freshly prepped eats and ingredients. Months of researching overseas eateries and the latest eating trends culminated in an exciting menu that is nourishing and packed with flavour. Everything Urban does aligns with their ‘unify, rejuvenate, balance, authentic and natural’ philosophy and yes, this is acronym sorcery at its finest. Encouraging us to embrace fresh, simple, and healthy ‘foodvenience’ to support our fast-paced lifestyles, we need no coercing coz this is srsly scratching an almighty itch.

Sit outside for people-watching gold, or park yourself inside to admire the natural fresh setting of deep basil green subway tiles, exposed timber beam ceiling weaved with green ceiling plants, and fitting green neon “live consciously” sign. Or maybe you’d rather pick up some takeaway meals, fresh cabinet eats, snacks, drinks and other essentials to enjoy at home. Whatever tosses your salad, the nosh and vibe are on point and these guys really deliver. Like literally – they actually deliver. Plus, the high quality food is fairly priced and packaged to be as minimally harmful to the environment as possible, and we’ll raise our glasses to that.

Enjoy an all-day breaky or lunch with wraps, burgers, salads and more. There are plenty of gluten-free and vegan options, like the Signature Buckwheat Pancakes and Churros, or the Vegan Club Sandwich. Pair your feed with a premium Allpress coffee, or one of the famous house-made Vegan Smoothies. Our vote goes to the Urban Acai Smoothie with Acai berry soft serve, mixed berries and coconut water which is especially satisfying after a ‘b(l)ender’.

Urban Fish Market, Broadbeach (image supplied)
Urban Fish Market, Broadbeach (image supplied)

Flowing seamlessly into the equally popular Urban Fish Market, the collaborative and super friendly Urban team have another winner on their hands here. Boasting a menu which is completely gluten and dairy free, everyone can o-fishally enjoy their seafood safely. Like next door, Urban’s owners executed the in-house design along with builder Keith Hundle from Constructure, nailing a fresh, modern, and easy vibe to match their nosh. Dine inside on the gorgeous mosaic tables, take in the fresh air and sea breeze outside, or grab-and-go, perhaps over to the big blue coz LBH, fish and chips always taste better on the beach.

The Chef and his team tick all the right boxes with an epic fresh and cooked seafood menu. How about a Barra Burger or some grilled coral trout, cassava wedges, and a sweet potato scallop coz #MoreTatersLessHaters. We also recommend signature dishes like the Snapper Pie and Spicy Grilled Prawn Salad, and why not throw in some fresh Tasmanian oysters or a fresh bucket of Trawler Prawns for good measure. Ooh and bonus, you can pre-order Fresh Fish Market Platters for Christmas and New Year coz nothing says silly season in Oz like a dirty big helping of seafood. Only it’s clean of course, and there’ll be no mood-killing trips to A&E coz Uncle Joe smashed too many loaded eggnogs and forgot about his dairy allergy.

Broadbeach has long been regarded as one of our wining, dining and shopping. With a number of ‘stayers’ boasting staunch followers for many moons, sprinkled with a hearty helping of shiny new eats and drinks players, nothing can dull the sparkle of this burb’s A-grade entertainer status.

Here are precisely 17 reasons why locals – and Gold Coasters far and wide – love themselves a piece of our much-loved Broady.

Social Eating House + Bar
If you’re a foodie, this is your go-to. A modern Australian sensation, Social has more hats than a Milliner’s workshop. With Executive Chef Matthew Jefferson in charge, you’ll experience a carefully curated range of bar snacks, charcuterie, and small and large share plates, all featuring the finest Australian ingredients and paired to perfection. A meal here is worth.every.cent.

The Star Gold Coast
If ever there was a reason to get a babysitter, it’s for a session at The Star. Between the live music and amazing food at the Garden Kitchen & Bar, award-winning Cantonese, Japanese and modern Australian cuisine at Uncle Su, Kiyomi, and Nineteen at The Star, authentic Italian eats at Cucina Vivo, the ultimate buffet experience at Harvest Buffet, a few bevvies at the new-look Atrium Bar and/or the Insta-fave rooftop lounge bar at Nineteen, who needs to go anywhere else?
Where: 1 Casino Drive, Broadbeach

Broadbeach Bowls Club
Nothing says a chilled GC arvo like a game of barefoot bowls with a brew in hand. Another enduring favourite amongst the local set here on the GC, Broadbeach Bowls Club never fails to deliver a feel-good time for young and old. They serve up big portions of all your go-to pub-grub meals and do a great canape package for a laid-back birthday or celebration.

Dracula’s Cabaret Restaurant
If you’re after a tried and tested, long-standing comedic cabaret, good ‘ole Dracs has been serving up frights, food and frivolity since we were all ankle-biters. Most people are sold when they hear there’s a ghost train alone, let alone the actual show (which changes every so often, so there’s always a reason to go back), banquet dinner…and shots in syringes!
Where: Hooker Boulevard, Broadbeach

Aloha Bar and Dining
This tropical hidden treasure is all fun vibes, good food and cracking good times. Popular for its hospo nights, taco Thursdays, karaoke nights, live music and pumping DJs, there’s always something going on here. The tapas always deliver the feels (bao buns…I die!!), the Cucumber and Jalapeno Margi is (too) easy to drink, and we never tire of the super cute fit-out.

Blues on Broadbeach
So unlike our other listings, it may not be here 24/7 but it’s that much of a Broady icon that it would be criminal not to throw it a mention. As the name suggests, it brings us world-class blues and jazz music from locals and famous acts alike, performing across multiple venues over four unforgettable days. And it’s free, and sorry but when does that ever happen?

CHA CHA Japanese Restaurant
Gold Coasters have been CHA CHA bound for an authentic Japanese nosh-up which won’t break the bank for years, and that’s not about to change any time soon. The banquet menu is divine and every visit you’ll experience the same level of scrumptiousness. But the soy on the dim sum…it’s BYO and it’s hard to find an already affordable yet high-quality restaurant offering our 3 favourite letters. Score.

The Oasis
An everyday escape for locals, The Oasis is one of our numero uno shopping centres and for good reason. Not only some unique fashion boutiques live here, but the sheer number of amazing eateries is tres impressive. Just look for the London-esk red phone box and you know good times await. An intimate, hidden gem-adorned in graffiti and jam-packed with peeps sipping and bopping along to the sweet sounds of live DJ’s, this joint is seriously cool. The cocktail list is l.i.t, the crew are super engaging, and they’ve even been known to host things like a Wild Flower Gin Masterclass. What’s not to love?

Sofia’s goes from a 10 to a 10,000,000

It’s no secret that The Oasis Shopping Centre houses some stellar eateries, and leading the pack is the new look Coastal European stunner, Sofia’s Restaurant & Bar. Now a hop, skip and a jump up the road from its original spot, it’s bigger and more beautiful than ever. Everything about this luxe Mediterranean people pleaser is perfectly executed, from the on-fleek new fit-out, to the carefully curated menu championing simple, delicious food. In fact, even the plates were imported from Italy, handmade and hand painted to order and yeah, this makes our Ikea plates at home look like the poor cousins that they are.

Owner Henry Hunt has stayed true to his euro chic roots, keeping just the right amount of refined Mediterranean feels mixed with a very fresh and current aesthetic. Engaging Bridgette Ford for the interior design and Shopfit & Co. to manage the build, the result is everything we’d hoped for…and more.

The duck egg blue, white and gold ‘Sofia’s’ entry station still stands loud and proud out front of the undercover dining area, flanked by two beautiful fringed umbrellas in the same colour palette. There are marble tables with coastal wood and white hued chairs leading into the showstopping inside, boasting elegant booths, more tables and chairs, and THAT BAR. Yes, it deserves upper case. The benchtop surface is a stunning juxtaposition of grey, black and white terrazzo triangle slabs, set alongside equally lush peach, black and white triangle slabs. Adorning the bar back and restaurant wall, you’ll see statement wide archway shelves housing an iconic selection of spirits and srsly, arches get us every.single.time. Add a healthy dose of overhanging greenery and capacity for 100 people and voila, it’s the perfect destination for your next lunch, dinner, or private function.

Chef Dan Paulman cooks up handmade pastas, woodfired bread (#CarbsOnCarbs), fresh seafood, and beautiful sharing plates galore. To get into the nitty gritty, let’s go with a starter of Sofia’s famous house-made bread with extra virgin olive oil, oregano and salt, and perhaps a Baked Eggplant stuffed with mascarpone and parmesan. But wait, we just spotted the long list of cheese and salumi varieties to share and we’re so grabbing a Gorgonzola and a Truffle Salami #idie.

Moving on to the main event and the signature dish, Sofia’s Cacio e Peppe with linguine, cream, cracked pepper, sea salt, served at the table in our 40kg Parmesan wheel aged for 2.5yrs is a must! It serves two so bring your love, your besty, or just a really big appetite and decimate the lot. This will go nicely with a Heirloom Tomato Salad with fresh basil, truffle and balsamic reduction and whaddaya know, that’s on the menu too! If you’d prefer something for the grill, may we draw your attention to the Fish of the Day served with saffron broth, clams and muscles, with a side of Shoestring Fries garnished simply with oregano and sea salt. That’s amore alright.

Now let’s talk cocktails and thank God we hear you all say. They do a sensational Spicy Margarita and avid Inside Gold Coast readers will know we’re rather partial to one of these so when we say it’s good, it’s fricken good. Sofia’s make theirs with bird’s eye chilli infused Olmeca Altos tequila, Cointreau, fresh lime juice, passionfruit puree and house made syrup and trust us, catch an Uber *orders several more*.

Speaking of Ubers, the epic mile-long wine list is another reason to resign from DD duty. They stock over 200 labels of wine and despite being mildly overwhelming for the indecisive, even the fussiest grape juice drinker will be on cloud wine.

So there you have it. The new Sofia’s certainly gets our tick of approval, and we look forward to saying “salute” (on repeat) at THAT.BAR too many times over the coming months.

Doko Demo V’s new digs will make your heart beet!

Doko Demo V (Image: © 2022 Inside Gold Coast)

Vegetarians and vegans, guess who’s back? Back again? Nope not Shady, but Doko Demo V and yep, tell a friend (or a good spud-ie) because the new digs are positively radishing! Serving up multicultural vegan cuisine like a boss, we’ve been rooting for Doko Demo V 2.0 to be as unbeetable as the original noshery…and we’re pea-sed to confirm it’s even better! With not mushroom for improvement to begin with, they’ve come back like a kale-force wind and yes, these vegan puns are super corny.

Once sitting pretty in Miami, passionate owners Jared Peck and Vian made the big decision to shut up shop and relocate their booming business to escape ongoing tram constructions. Recently reopening in West Burleigh, all we can say is Miami: 0, Burleigh: 1, as this plant-based pearler is a winner winner (faux) chicken dinner! Even if you’re a carnivore from way back, we recommend you live on the veg and try this place because you’d never know meat had been given the flick. The flavours – and meal presentation – are tofu-king good.

Doko Demo V (Image: © 2022 Inside Gold Coast)

Vian has nailed the interior design and along with her builder Greg, has created the perfect look and feel for this Bali-vibing breath of fresh air. Step inside and you’re instantly drawn to an authentic eye-catching bamboo bar with thatched roofing. There’s a vine-covered white vertical veejay wall housing the kitchen with a cool “Meatless doesn’t mean tasteless” aqua neon sign, and we’ll cheers to that.

There’s plenty of gorgeous greenery, festoon lighting, and a mash-up of wooden booths, funky tree slab tables, and old-school chunky timber tables and chairs. Accommodating 70 people, dining extends to an undercover outdoor area with plenty more seating, and a statement tree wallpaper adorned wall with peach neon “All Lives Matter” sign #TrueDat.

Doko Demo V (Image: © 2022 Inside Gold Coast)
Doko Demo V (Image: © 2022 Inside Gold Coast)

Now the most stressful decision you’ll face is do I go for breakfast, lunch or dinner because both menus will take you to your hap-pea place. Jared also dons the Head Chef hat and friends, this man is a wizard in the kitchen. For the most important meal of the day, we couldn’t go past the Taro Pancake Stack with fresh fruit salad, vanilla ice cream and maple which we might also order for lunch, because it’s an all-day breakky menu! And hey, we can go all sorts of non-conventional here because the lunch menu is also available from 7am, and this is like the exponentially levelled-up, meatless version of a post Melba’s Maccas hit at sunrise! We’ve picked the Works Burger with cheese, onion, lettuce, egg, tomato, beetroot, onion, pineapple, sriracha mayo, and bbq sauce on a charcoal bun with a side of Potato Fries. I can’t believe it’s not butter meat!

Doko Demo V (Image: © 2022 Inside Gold Coast)
Doko Demo V (Image: © 2022 Inside Gold Coast)

For dinner, how about an entrée of Pan-Fried Dumplings with special soy dipping sauce and some BBQ Pork Buns peas and thank you? Then, choose from Burgers, Wraps, Pizza, Pasta and a tasty selection of other plant-based pleasers. The Spicy Pepperoni Pizza with smoky bbq, onion, capsicum, jalapeno, chilli flakes, cheese, and sausage goes down a treat, as does the No Beef Lasagne with garden salad, and the Unreal Scallopini with garden vegetables, mash potato, brandy, and mushroom cream sauce. And for something sweet, we’re ordering the Pot Plant Ice Cream because it combines our two favourite things and srsly, it would be rude not to.

Cocktails always deserve a shout-out, especially the Dokodemo with watermelon juice, vodka and mint but if it’s too early for booze (does anyone else hear crickets?), they do a mean coffee, shake, tea, juice and Hemp Kombucha.

Yep it’s official – we’ve rediscovered our culinary soil mate #EatBeansNotBeings.
