7 places with epic mocktails to tackle Dry July

Now there is no excuse to decline those social invites!

Edgewater Mocktail (image supplied)
Edgewater Mocktail (image supplied)

Whether you’re a long-time fan of fancy non-alcoholic drinks, a designated driver or you’re feeling the call for taking it easy on boozy libations — it’s never a bad idea to choose yourself a well-crafted and tasty mocktail over a cocktail. Plus, your future self will be ever so grateful for it. In the spirit of Dry July, we’ve sought out the very best places for mocktails you can sample whilst out and about on the Gold Coast.

Edgewater
Those of you familiar with this Isle of Capri restaurant know this is the place to sample some extraordinary dishes, flawless service and one of the Coast’s most relaxed and premium settings. However, it’s only when you take a close look at their extensive drink’s folder you realise this venue takes quenching your thirst as a serious matter. Beyond delectable cocktails and an attractive wine list, you’ll come across a ‘liquid journey’ selection of luxe mocktails.
Our pick: Virgin Frozen Daiquiri — with your choice of flavours mango, strawberry or lychee.
Where: Shop 3 G7, Capri on Via Roma, Via Roma, Surfers Paradise

Cowch Dessert & Cocktail Bar
New and hot onto the Oracle Boulevard scene in bustling Broadbeach, this glamorous dessert and cocktail bar is truly one for the sweet tooths out there. Drop in for a an after-dinner treat, or a sugar-infused afternoon pick me up — or just cause! What the name doesn’t allude to is the tasty array of speciality drinks they can conjure up sans alcohol. Plus, the way they present all their overly indulgent drinks, no one will even guess you’re drinking yourself a mocktail!
Our pick: The Bees Knees — Milk, chocolate, toasted marshmallow, and honeycomb syrup, topped with whipped cream, chocolate flakes, and toasted marshmallows.
Where: 1 Oracle Boulevard, Broadbeach

Iced VoVo Shake & The Bee's Knees Mocktail at Cowch (image supplied)

Hogs Breath Café
Luckily for us, we don’t have one but two locations to experience the laidback and taste-filled experience of Hog’s Breath Café. No matter where you walk through the doors of this Australian favourite, you are promised lip-smacking eats, a place to relax for the whole family and over eight fun-filled mocktails to choose from.
Our pick: The Messy Hog — Strawberry or chocolate milk with heaps of whipped cream and syrup drizzle.
Where: 4215/60-70 SeaWorld Drive, Main Beach or Soul, Building T2/9 Cavill Avenue, Surfers Paradise

Roosevelt Lounge
Catering by their admission for the mature and well-heeled crowd, Roosevelt Lounge is the sultry prohibition-era cocktail bar that just permeates seductiveness — the kind of venue you could quickly lose a few hours without even noticing. Open only three evenings of the week, when you do stop by, you’ll not only be spoilt with world-class drinks but also serenaded with live jazz and blues music long into the night. What a place to catch up with friends!
Our pick: Lyre’s Amaretto Sour — everyone’s favourite! Lyre’s non-alcoholic Amaretto, fresh lemon juice, sugar, egg whites, and a little bit of magic.
Where: 75 Surf Parade, Broadbeach

Topgolf
Never swung a golf club in your life? Perfect. You’re going to love Topgolf — that’s if you haven’t been already. This multi-level entertainment venue is THE place to bring a group of friends together and have a great time with a little bit of competition thrown in there for good measure. Not only will you be hitting micro-chipped golf balls to your heart’s content, but you can also try a wide selection of chef cooked eats, or if you prefer, just chill out with some drinks and live music on their rooftop terrace. The choice is yours.
Our pick: All mocktails are served in a flashing golf bag mug, so you really can’t go wrong. Be sure to ask the friendly Bay Host or Bartender for their recommendation on the day!
Where: Corner of Roadshow Way and Entertainment Drive, Oxenford

Justin Lane
The one, the only. Long established as one of the Gold Coast’s premier eating out spots and one of the best rooftops to grab a pizza and watch the sun go down: another glorious day in Burleigh over. SIGH. It’s usually on the busier night’s that Justin Lane comes into its own, with regular live DJs and some of the Coast’s hottest crowd packing themselves in to sample amazing cocktails and some hella good times. And if you’re choosing to abstain from alcohol — for whatever reason — the bartender’s selection of mocktails is more than adequate. Put simply; there’s no excuse for you to not join in the fun!
Our pick: The Sicilian Sunset – a classic Italian spritz. However, this complex little number has non-alcoholic Italian aperitif, Fever-Tree blood orange soda, rhubarb, Peychaud’s, basil and lime.
Where: 1708-1710 Gold Coast Hwy, Burleigh Heads

Spice Kitchen & Bar
Already proving to be the place to head for delicious Thai dishes any day of the week, Spice Kitchen & Bar hasn’t been around long, but it has already garnered a devoted following. Being situated on the Victoria Avenue Mall outside Oasis Shopping Centre, this Asian eatery is a great option if you’re wanting to be in the heart of Broady. These guys have all the usual soft drinks you’d expect to find but also a neat little collection of iced Thai teas to choose from – a less common mocktail option that we are here for.
Our pick: Pink Thai Tea — creamy with hints of raspberry. Yum!
Where: Shop 67 Oasis Shopping Centre, 75 Victoria Avenue, Broadbeach

5 Gold Coast hikes to get your blood pumping

Natural Bridge

Hiking. It’s an acquired taste but if walking long distances for the sheer joy of it floats your boat, where better to indulge than the picturesque Gold Coast. Particularly at the height of summer.

There are many places to trek around outside the comfort of your Netflix binge zone and here are five of them (from a literal walk in the park to the mother of all hiking adventures, in that order). Don’t forget water bottles and snacks.

Apple Tree Park Tracks
Sounds delightful doesn’t it. The park itself is actually a possible starting point for entry onto The Great Walk but allows your tired bones a bit of respite if 54km of walking is slightly out of your comfort zone (yes, hi). You can pretty much walk as far as you like, for as long as you like and then turn around and walk back for a picnic in the park. Take healthy foods so your walk doesn’t feel like it’s in vain.
Start: On Springbrook Rd next to the Springbrook Mountain Chalets

Natural Bridge
No doubt you’ve (at least) seen snaps of the stunning little spot that is Natural Bridge. A literal rock bridge in the middle of the rainforest complete with a sparkly waterfall and so much beautiful greenery and fresh air and relaxing wilderness noises. It’s a stunner and a fairly cruisy downhill walk to get there (bit slippery on the bridge so watch your step) and through the trees. Obvs it’s uphill on the way back but you won’t even notice you’ll be so chilled out. Make sure you’ve got a camera to capture the magic.
Start: Follow the signs towards Springbrook and then you will see signs for Natural Bridge on Natural Bridge Rd

South Stradbroke Island
Saying you’ve circumnavigated something is, quite frankly, a dream that’s always been somewhat unattainable. Until now. It’s possible to walk the entire way around South Straddy and, while it might take you awhile (it’s 21km long and 2.5km wide) it’s well worth it for the breathtaking views. Walking from the western side to the east will only take you around an hour so that’s quite relaxing. All the way around will take you at least a day so ensure you pack provisions. Once you’re done you should definitely stop in at McLarens Landing (the pub) because a hard earned thirst needs a big cold beer.
Start: Take the ferry from Hope Island and start your walk from wherever your little heart desires

Toolona Creek Circuit
Keen for a day of walking? Neither, but there are some folks who might be. To those people we say, get on board the Toolona Creek Circuit. The first part will take you to Picnic Rock and along the Toolona Creek to the falls. From there you can detour to the lookout for a rest and gaze lovingly out at the Tweed Valley, Mt Warning, Byron Bay and Straddy (hi hiking friends). Sounds chill enough except the entire track will probably take you around seven hours too. Prepare before you go and if it gets too much, turn yourself around and head home. Good luck.
Start: Head to Canungra and follow the signs to Lamington Plateau, Green Mountain Car Park aka O’Reillys.

The Great Walk
Go hard or go home right. This one’s a doozy and you might want to carve out a good chunk of time for the 54km trek. It’s best to start at Lamington National Park and finish at Springbrook and they say to allow three days to complete the walk (sheer joy remember). You’ll skirt around the rim of the Tweed Volcano and pass through the ancient lands of the Yugambeh people. Maybe put in a bit of practice with the walks below before you set out on this little adventure, it ain’t for the faint hearted. Take plenty water, camping gear and ensure you’re equipped for all weather possibilities.
Start: From the Pacific Motorway, take the Nerang exit (exit 69 from the north, exit 71 from the south) and follow the signs to Lamington National Park.

11 next-level Gold Coast rooftop bars

The Exhibitionist Bar (image supplied)
The Exhibitionist Bar (image supplied)

If Queensland weather doesn’t shout rooftop bars at you in a high-pitched squeal, we don’t know what will. Our climate, coupled with the amazing hospitality scene here in our city, means these open-air meccas of good times and delicious libations are the prime place to find yourself — any time of the year! It’s all about drinks in the sunshine and snapping selfies with picturesque backgrounds for Insta-bragging purposes.

So, in honour of bars in high places, here are 11 next-level rooftop bars you should make it a priority to visit this weekend — and next weekend, and the weekend after…

The Exhibitionist Bar
When HOTA opened its brand new state of the art gallery building last year (the biggest outside a capital city, by the way), we all knew the art scene was about to go up a level or two. What we didn’t realise was that a sublimely positioned rooftop bar was a part of the deal also. The highly talented Tom Angel heads up a bar and creative cocktail list, which is a seriously good spot for a sundowner — and the ideal place to take out of towners!
Where: Level 5/135 Bundall Rd, Surfers Paradise

Tropic Vice
Glitzy, glamorous, and generally a wonderful time all around, Tropic Vice was the rooftop bar Nobby Beach was yearning for, and it came to fruition in 2021. The ideal spot for a weekend catch up, a mid-week cheeky cocktail, or an epic bottomless brunch every Sunday. Do yourself a favour: find yourself here sipping a cocktail whilst drinking in the gorgeous hinterland view.
Where: 2215 Gold Coast Hwy, Mermaid Beach

The Island Rooftop
Find the Gold Coast’s largest open air and much-loved rooftop bar perched on top of the The Island in Surfers ParadiseThe Island Rooftop is part nightclub, part bar, part live music venue, and all the parts are a fun time no matter the day of the week. Head there for the epic weekend Grazy Days lunch or just to feel like you’re on Island time.

The fanciest of the bunch is undoubtedly Nineteen at The Star, complete with velvet booth-style seating, an infinity pool and ocean views for days. Found atop the The Star Gold Coast’s The Darling, Nineteen is the perfect place for people-watching, dressing up and sipping on fancy tipples while dancing the night away. Oh and be sure to take a snap on the runway that stretches out in the pool!
Where: The Darling, Gold Coast Hwy, Broadbeach

Frida Sol
The Palm Beach Mexi restaurant doubles as a rooftop bar with views out to the ocean and lots of salty ocean breezes. The eats are fresh and flavoursome, and there’s many a margarita on the list to soothe that sweltering summer humidity we’re currently experiencing. Get into Frida Sol.
Where: 1176 Gold Coast Hwy, Palm Beach

Mr PP’s Deli & Rooftop Bar
A game-changer in Southport’s food and beverage scene was Mr PP’s, a deli and rooftop bar boasting city views and plenty of good vibes in the century-old postal building. There is a generous menu full of pizzas, tapas and charcuterie boards and this, folks, is the reason we love rooftop bars. Plus cocktails and local tipples, of which there are many at Mr PP’s. Live music on Sundays too.
Where: 43 Nerang St, Southport

The Collective
Everyone’s favourite multi-restaurant establishment, The Collective also boasts a sweet rooftop bar with some epic cocktails for your sipping pleasure. You can also order eats from one of the five menus on offer and watch the sunset over the ocean while you’re at it. We HIGHLY recommend.
Where: 1128 Gold Coast Hwy, Palm Beach

Justin Lane (image supplied)
Justin Lane (image supplied)

Justin Lane
A much-loved favourite and the Gold Coast’s first official rooftop bar, Justin Lane is still one of the most popular rooftop’s since it’s opening in 2011. The space is intimate with booth-style seating overlooking Burleigh and plenty of cocktails to tickle your fancy. Downstairs is all the delicious pizza you could possibly need, so fill up on that, then head upstairs to mingle with the gang.
Where: 1708-1710 Gold Coast Hwy, Burleigh Heads

Last Night on Earth
Pretty sure that if it were, in fact, your last night on Earth, you would want to spend it at a sweet rooftop bar with bulk cocktails at the ready. Which maybe isn’t the point of Southport’s Last Night on Earth but a good intro nonetheless. Last Night on Earth is the work of local legend Arran Wollams and his crew; it’s a somewhat underworld themed rooftop bar in the heart of Southport offering good times aplenty. It’s a dive bar, but not as you know it. Check it out.
Where: 50b Nerang St, Southport

Moxy's Rooftop Bar (Image: © 2019 Inside Gold Coast)
Moxy's Rooftop Bar (Image: © 2019 Inside Gold Coast)

Moxy’s Rooftop Bar
This rooftop bar located down in southerly Coolangatta has beautiful glimpses of the ocean, lots of live music and an impressive cocktail menu that’ll keep you coming back for more. Whilst they may not do eats, you can order from the Mexican joint downstairs, and we’re fairly sure there’s nothing that pairs better than bulk cocktails and tacos. Always lively and worth the trip down the Coast.
Where: 2/152 Griffith St, Coolangatta

Aviary Rooftop Bar
Perched atop Mantra on Sharks, Aviary Rooftop Bar’s views are as stunning as their extensive drinks list. With 180 degree views over the Surfers Paradise skyline and the ocean, it’s the perfect place for an after work beverage or Sunday arvo session with the crew. Ohh and don’t even get us started on their authentic Italian pizza’s, and tapas… if you know, you know.
