Do you like to shop high end goods? Do you enjoy visiting designer stores that are dressed to the (sixty)nines with luxury ‘touches’ at every turn? And finally, do you go ‘nuts’ when a new sex shop comes to town?

You may have a boner to pick with us for being so forward, but don’t be like that or you’ll miss our blow-by-blow account of the GC’s new highbrow sexual wellness boutique. Described as the Gucci of sex stores, the luxuriously appointed Hall of Harper was recently erected in Surfers Paradise and guys, it’s the full package.

Stripped of all the tacky, dingy vibes often associated with this sort of establishment, Hall of Harper is brimming with lashings of luxe, polish and style. Anything but your stereotypical fluro-lit dodgy sex shop where you spend a good hour working up the guts to actually go inside, this is a modern lover’s sanctuary. Delivering a new sexual wellness experience, it’s an up-scale boutique boasting a selection of the world’s most luxurious sexual brands.

With more beautifully designed accents and finishes that you can poke a, umm, stick at, this unique concept offers an experience to arouse all the senses. In addition to the carefully curated product suite, the space’s speakeasy entrance and champagne bar are all that and a bag of condoms. Every inch has been thoughtfully laid out and filled with the best of the breast, ah we mean, best, quality interiors. A stand-out is definitely the specialty store’s erotic art, well-hung and bound to stimulate a deep appreciation for its museum-worthy feels.

So just who can we thank for changing the outdated and seedy stereotype of sex shops? Locally based banana-bender siblings Mollie and Charlotte O’Sullivan identified a gap in the market for a sophisticated, inclusive, and calming sexual wellness provider.

Far from a stroke of good luck, they thought long and hard about how to do it right, and they certainly hit the nail on the head. Believing that the power of your sexual self is the key to harmony between mind, soul and body, all we can say is #AmenSisters.

Displaying sex toys like jewellery and art, Hall of Harper offers an intimate escape where customers of any orientation can discover new pleasures. So much more than gimmicky gadgets to improve your no-pants dance, there’s a refreshing emphasis on sustainably designed and produced products, developed through a female lens.

You’ll find everything from artistry leather work, latex looks, to all-natural lubes and arousal serums, all of which meet the sisters’ stringent quality criteria. Silicone toys are crafted from medical grade silicone and free of phthalates and BPA. Liquids are chosen for their high-quality natural ingredient checklist, PH balance and cruelty-free formulas, while all leather products are made by hand in Italy from full-grain leather.

11 next-level Gold Coast rooftop bars

The Exhibitionist Bar (image supplied)
The Exhibitionist Bar (image supplied)

If Queensland weather doesn’t shout rooftop bars at you in a high-pitched squeal, we don’t know what will. Our climate, coupled with the amazing hospitality scene here in our city, means these open-air meccas of good times and delicious libations are the prime place to find yourself — any time of the year! It’s all about drinks in the sunshine and snapping selfies with picturesque backgrounds for Insta-bragging purposes.

So, in honour of bars in high places, here are 11 next-level rooftop bars you should make it a priority to visit this weekend — and next weekend, and the weekend after…

The Exhibitionist Bar
When HOTA opened its brand new state of the art gallery building last year (the biggest outside a capital city, by the way), we all knew the art scene was about to go up a level or two. What we didn’t realise was that a sublimely positioned rooftop bar was a part of the deal also. The highly talented Tom Angel heads up a bar and creative cocktail list, which is a seriously good spot for a sundowner — and the ideal place to take out of towners!
Where: Level 5/135 Bundall Rd, Surfers Paradise

The ideal spot for a weekend catch up, a mid-week cheeky cocktail, or an epic bottomless brunch every Sunday. Do yourself a favour: find yourself here sipping a cocktail whilst drinking in the gorgeous hinterland view.

Mr PP’s Deli & Rooftop Bar
A game-changer in Southport’s food and beverage scene was Mr PP’s, a deli and rooftop bar boasting city views and plenty of good vibes in the century-old postal building. There is a generous menu full of pizzas, tapas and charcuterie boards and this, folks, is the reason we love rooftop bars. Plus cocktails and local tipples, of which there are many at Mr PP’s. Live music on Sundays too.
Where: 43 Nerang St, Southport

The Collective
Everyone’s favourite multi-restaurant establishment, The Collective also boasts a sweet rooftop bar with some epic cocktails for your sipping pleasure. You can also order eats from one of the five menus on offer and watch the sunset over the ocean while you’re at it. We HIGHLY recommend.

Justin Lane
A much-loved favourite and the Gold Coast’s first official rooftop bar, Justin Lane is still one of the most popular rooftop’s since it’s opening in 2011. The space is intimate with booth-style seating overlooking Burleigh and plenty of cocktails to tickle your fancy. Downstairs is all the delicious pizza you could possibly need, so fill up on that, then head upstairs to mingle with the gang.

Last Night on Earth
Pretty sure that if it were, in fact, your last night on Earth, you would want to spend it at a sweet rooftop bar with bulk cocktails at the ready. Which maybe isn’t the point of Southport’s Last Night on Earth but a good intro nonetheless. Last Night on Earth is the work of local legend Arran Wollams and his crew; it’s a somewhat underworld themed rooftop bar in the heart of Southport offering good times aplenty. It’s a dive bar, but not as you know it. Check it out.

This rooftop bar located down in southerly Coolangatta has beautiful glimpses of the ocean, lots of live music and an impressive cocktail menu that’ll keep you coming back for more. Always lively and worth the trip down the Coast.

Grab breaky at Cuppa on 41
If you find yourself in Surfers Paradise before the afternoon, then you need to head to Cuppa on 41 to energise yourself for the day — as well as for all the other inclusions on this list! The café is an excellent concept that allows local underprivileged youth to become experienced in hospitality, and coincidentally isn’t so hard on your pocket either! Our pick is the Bauernomelett, a German-style omelette straight out of heaven. You’ll leave with a satisfied belly and knowing you have contributed to a change in a Gold Coasters future.

This charming family-owned and run restaurant has stood the test of time with locals and continually returning for great Italian classics and drinks to match. If you haven’t been in a little while, be sure to change that, the venue underwent a slight facelift late last year and is looking as enchanting as ever.

The family-friendly atmosphere is full of locals after their early morning beach walk tucking into a big brekky (but they’re also open for lunch and dinner too!) — a great option straight off the sand and when you feel the need to escape the crowds with some uber-friendly Queensland hospitality.

A new, hidden Mezcal-inspired speakeasy opens in Broadbeach

Veladora's interior (image supplied)
Veladora's interior (image supplied)

Occasionally a new venue slips in quietly, without fanfare or excessive shouting from the rooftops and that Gold Coasters, is how you know it’s a good time.

And you know what makes secretive newbies even better? When they are an underground, mezcal-inspired speakeasy with a doorway you need to discover to be allowed entry.

HOW FUN.

As you might expect, all of those things are true of the new space we’re here to discuss today. That space is called Veladora. It’s named after a true Mexican classic – a Mezcal glass made from prayer candle holders – and it is unlike anything we’ve seen around here for quite some time.

Veladora’s unsigned doorway is the gateway to an otherworldly, Mezcal-inspired speakeasy allowing for an exclusive 30 guests at a time.

Slip inside and discover the Gold Coast’s newest signature margaritas, ice-cold Tecate and a slew of exciting new sips to rival any you’ve experienced before.

We’re particularly partial to Midnight in Cancun (for various reasons), which is made with Don Julio Tequila, Woodford Bourbon, almond and homemade Yucatan cordial.

Veladora's margarita (image supplied)

There’s also the La Catrina with Sloe Gin, herbs liquor, blackberry and rosemary and look, it’s all a little bit dark and mysterious and those are our absolute favourite things. Of course you can sip on beer and wine too and there’s an impressive selection of each of those.

To eat, you’ll be greeted with some mind-blowing delights and we’d bet our Grandmother that you’ve never tasted combinations like these before.

How does black guacamole with green ants and mealworm-seasoned salsa sound? Maybe some squid ink-infused popcorn, spicy peanut and cricket trail mix and decadent duck parfait with cherry jelly and brioche? It’s all very exciting isn’t it?

The location of Veldora remains a closely guarded secret (and we’re not telling you either) but clued-up Coasties know to cross the bridge where the Broadbeach monorail once lived and look for a red palm tree to light the way.

We have no doubt you’ll find it and it’ll absolutely be worth it when you do.
