The Pastry Emporium 2.0

If there’s one question we should all be pondering in a time of the many new venues we’re currently experiencing, it is this: if your food isn’t Instagrammable, is it even food?

The answer, friends, is yes probably but how good is it when food resembles art so delightful you’re (almost) sad to put it in your mouth.

Enter The Pastry Emporium and the magical, unearthly sweet treats they’re now bestowing on the good people of Mermaid Waters. As of today (October 12th), The Pastry Emporium 2.0 is open for business and their business is making the most beautiful/tasty pastries you’ve ever laid eyes on. You’ll find them in the Coast’s coolest new foodie hub which is also home to Nude Sisters Kitchen and Lucky Bao.

You can grab yourself a coffee and perch yourself at a table or take your goods to go (so you’re not tempted to buy more).

Owner Adrian Grazioli opened his first shop in Bundall around four years ago and since then, we Gold Coasters have been privy to some of the most decadent and intricate flavour sensations around.

For instance there’s a thing called the St Tropez Cheesecake (the pink one) and it is made with pistachio sponge, lemon cream cheese mousse, a red berry insert, red glaze and white graffiti and a marshmallow and chocolate decoration.

There’s also the Milk and Strawberries (the white one) which is a coconut macaroon base, valrhona milk chocolate mousse, a strawberry insert and desiccated coconut.

Hopefully you’ve stopped reading and are on your way there right now.

If not (silly you), here are some more sentences.

All of those ridiculously beautiful goodies are made on site at the Bundall store along with bread, almond croissants and made to order celebration cakes. Yep.

We’re done, go treat yo’ self.

LOCATION: Shop 2, 90 Markeri St, Mermaid Waters
HOURS: 7am until 4pm Monday to Saturday and 7am until 2pm Sunday

Ferrero Rocher doughnut, D Point 10 (image supplied)

In what may be the happiest news of all time for those who love a good hazelnut spread (everyone), Friday the 5th of February marks World Nutella Day. Which means it’s time to celebrate the gooey, nutty godsend that literally whips people into a frenzy.

In honour of the day for which we are eternally grateful, here are 10 spots offering Nutella creations (listed North to South).

D Point 10 –  Ferrero Rocher Doughnut
The Ferrero Rocher Doughnuts (filled with lashings of Nutella) are some the very best things in the entire world and you (and should) can eat them by the dozen at D Point 10. So soft, so fluffy, so great.
Where: 71 Stevens Street, Southport, 2/2791 Gold Coast Highway, Broadbeach and 201 Varsity Parade, Varsity Lakes

Blendlove – Nutella Cheezecake
Hands down the best Nutella cheezecake ever made because it’s Vegan, Gluten Free, Wheat Free, Refined (Cane Sugar) Free, Dairy Free, and Soy Free, all the things! Choc hazelnut and buckini crust, creamy hazelnut cheesecake layer, topped with vegan chocolate and fresh hazelnuts. No guilt here.
Where: 1/253 Ferry Road, Southport

Salt Meats Cheese – Nutella Pizza
It’s pizza with Nutella on top- what’s not to love? Oh and it comes with whipped cream so there’s that too.
Where: 10 Beach Road, Surfers Paradise

Paradox Coffee Roasters – Iced Nutellalate
So it’s an Iced Latte but with Nutella which, as far as we’re concerned, makes it’s one of the best things in the world. Need we say more.
Where: The 4217, 7/10 Beach Road, Surfers Paradise

Elk Espresso –  Nutella Thick Shake
Elk Espresso are famous for their insane Nutella Thick Shake and they are literally one of the most delicious things you’ll ever taste. Maybe order two.
Where: 16 Chelsea Avenue, The Oasis Shopping Centre, Broadbeach

Cowch – Nutella Waffle Sandwich
There’s plenty of Nutella goodness at Cowch but in particular we are HUGE fans of the Nutella Waffle Sandwich with two scoops of creamy Nutella ice cream sandwiched between two Belgian waffles with a scoop of Nutella, crushed Oreo and strawberries. Yep.
Where: Pacific Fair Shopping Centre, Hooker Boulevard, Broadbeach

Bam Bam Bakehouse – Nutella Cronuts
Bam Bam’s Nutella Cronuts are the best way to start every day. The nutty spread is wrapped up in a soft buttery and sugar coated flaky croissant dough and honestly who even needs an explanation, jsut go eat some.
Where: 2519 Gold Coast Highway, Mermaid Beach

Paddock's Nutella Stuffed Chocolate Chip Cookie (image supplied)

All Time Coffee – Notella Doughnuts
For all the vegans out there, you don’t have to miss out! All-Time Coffee came up with an all vegan version of Nutella, No-tella. Nutella has never tasted so…healthy.

Paddock Bakery – Nutella Stuffed Chocolate Chip Cookie
Paddock’s cookies are perfection no matter which flavour you choose but the Nutella stuffed guy also boasts chocolate chips and is both soft and pull aparty and so very excellent.

A true Nutella connoisseur will go nuts for this one; it’s deep fried Oreos in doughnut batter with ice cream and Nutella drizzled on top. The dream.

A new pastry haven by the Bam Bam Bakehouse team

Custard Canteen (Image: © 2020 Inside Gold Coast)

In what might just be the most perfect start to any week in the history of weeks, the team behind Gold Coast favourites Bam Bam Bakehouse and Cubby Bakehouse (love y’all) have opened a new venue and we are happy dancing all over the place.

Its called Custard Canteen (another winner in the name department) and as of right now, it can be found at Talle Creek within the Recreation Centre complex and oh yes friends, it’s the goods.

You won’t miss the newbie, red and white striped flags are dotted throughout the expansive garden area and of course there will be heavenly scents wafting out from within.

Pull up a seat on one of the two outdoor decks, under said umbrellas or lay out a picnic rug and kick back on the grass with your furry mate (or your regular mate). There are flowers and plants everywhere and it’s a little garden oasis complete with some of the very best eats around.

Custard Canteen

Let’s discuss those shall we. Now as you’d know, if you’ve ever had the pleasure of sampling any of the teams’ other goodies (if you haven’t, are you even a Gold Coaster) they’re the very best around. A WHOLE LOT of research goes into every single thing Ben, Ursula and their crew create to ensure consistent perfection.

Which is exactly what you’re going to experience at Custard Canteen, particularly in the form of their hero product, Portuguese Tarts. Heaven on Earth you guys.

So they’re layers of crisp, pastry encasing warm, sweet love-of-our-lives custard that kind of explodes in your mouth when you bite into it. In the most amazing possible way obviously.

Besides those, there are Almond Croissant Tarts, which are indeed tart versions of their famous Almond Croissants and gooey, melty cookies that are the love of our lives also.

If you’re in the market for a savoury something, there’s a whole menu for that too. From the Butter Boy (their little mascot) Benny with streaky bacon, poached eggs and hollandaise on a puff pastry parcel to their (also famous) Prawn Po Boy with crispy buttermilk prawns, salad things and remoulade on a milk hoagie, it’s all delightful.

Oh and there’s also exceptional Bacon and Egg Rolls and a must-try French Toast Toastie which is a sourdough Monte Cristo with ham, Swiss cheese, maple and cinnamon sugar. Plus burgers and a hot dog and all your favourite roll-off-the-sand treats.

So basically all you need to do is frolic in Talle Creek, pop over for some goodies, rinse and repeat. Best time ever.

Custard Canteen, what are you waiting for Gold Coasters?

LOCATION: Tallebudgera Recreation Centre, Gold Coast Hwy, Palm Beach
HOURS: Daily 6.30am until 2.30pm
