Chris Bennie: On Top, In Front

  • The Arts Centre

On Top, In Front is an exhibition by Gold Coast-based artist Chris Bennie, which explores the concept of how items and ideas are transformed through the process of literally placing objects on top or in front of others, obscuring the status of the original item and altering its meaning.

Often described as playful, romantic, intelligent and banal all at once, Bennie’s work has the ability to take unremarkable daily rituals and common objects and transform them into something unforeseen and new.

On Top, In Front stems from personal reflection on ten years of art making and provides audiences an opportunity to explore the diversity of Bennie’s practice. Included in the exhibition are artworks that are familiar along with new photography, video, collage and painting.

The exhibition sees New Zealand-born Bennie come full circle in his impressive career, which started on the Gold Coast and has since gone on to national acclaim.
