How long have you been a Gold Coast local?
Since I was 12

What do you love the most about the Gold Coast?
The lifestyle, which wouldn’t come as a surprise to anyone who lives here! It’s the best. We are so lucky to have wonderful green parks everywhere you turn, beautiful clean beaches and fantastic family-friendly attractions. We haven’t had a proper holiday since the start of Covid and I don’t feel like we have missed out in the slightest. There is so much to do here, plus fantastic warm weather. Every weekend feels like we are on a little family adventure and I’m so happy my kids can grow up in the great outdoors.

I’ve always loved this city, but appreciate it even more now that we have a young family. It’s a thriving place, with top-class schools and plenty of opportunities to work and play.

Tell us a bit about yourself.
I’m pretty driven and was definitely focused on my career for much of my adult life. That’s taken a big shift though, since becoming a Mum. My world is now centred around our two babies, and I couldn’t imagine doing life any other way! We like to keep busy and love the outdoors. Nothing makes me happier than seeing my little ones grow, laugh, and experience all of the magic we tend to take for granted as grown-ups.

How did you get started in journalism and what inspired you to become a news presenter and reporter?
TV reporting was a dream of mine since I was a very young girl. I used to watch the news and then host my own pretend segments! I’ve always enjoyed writing and was born curious. I was the kid who would always ask, “but why?”

I studied Journalism at Griffith University straight after finishing high school and got my first media job at 90.9 Sea FM. I used to drive around in the ‘Sea Cruiser’ giving away free chips and chocolate milks. It was a foot in the door and I ended up working my way into the newsroom. That lead to my first gig in TV, at Southern Cross Ten in Canberra, and from there I moved around a bit, to Lismore, the Gold Coast, Brisbane and Sydney, before landing my dream job back here, as co-anchor of 7 News Gold Coast.

Can you share any memorable experiences or stories that have stood out to you during your time as a news presenter and reporter?
My first big international story was quite memorable. Does anyone remember ‘Dirk’ the penguin, who was stolen from Sea World? I managed to get an exclusive interview with Dirk’s two captors, who bizarrely agreed to share their story. They were Welsh tourists, who broke into the theme park one night on a drunken expedition and ended up taking the penguin back to their hotel. They had filmed it too – so we had exclusive video of poor Dirk, in a hotel bathtub, plus bonus video of the guys dodging security and going for a nighttime splash with the dolphins. This story went global – before ‘going viral’ was even a thing. Fortunately, it had a happy ending. Dirk was safe and returned to the park. As for his penguin-nappers; they got a dressing down in court but escaped any serious punishment. I recall their lawyer, Bill Potts, even wore a penguin tie for the occasion. You just don’t come across stories like that every day… you couldn’t even make that one up!

What do you love most about your job?
The above story highlights how interesting my job can be! The thrill of the chase can be exciting, but also stressful, and sometimes very upsetting. As journalists, we all have to cover stories we don’t want to. But the media isn’t all doom and gloom. I’ve been lucky enough to cover truly remarkable and heart-warming stories in equal measure. Our Gold Coast News is very focused on the community, and I love discovering all the wonderful things going on in our backyard.

I’m also very lucky that we have a fantastic team. We are friends, not just colleagues, and that makes a big difference to workplace morale.

The other bonus of my job – not going to lie – it is pretty sweet sitting in the hair and makeup chair, considering I pretty much live in my active wear and mum-bun all day every day!

What advice would you give to aspiring journalists who are looking to enter the field?
You have to love it. It’s a demanding job, but rewarding for those who are dedicated. The best thing I did was move around. You learn so much from working in different towns and cities, covering all sorts of colourful and interesting stories. You really earn your stripes in the regions. Also, don’t be afraid to ask for advice. I find the rush rush rush of the current 24-hour news cycle means young journalists are often too busy to ask for guidance. When I started out as a junior reporter, I would seek out regular feedback from the seniors, and always wanted to know how I could improve. So, my advice, find a journo you admire and reach out for some mentoring. You’ll be surprised how many are happy to help.

What are your Gold Coast favourites…
Café/coffee spot
: Anywhere with a playground!
Restaurant: As above! We love the restaurants at the Oracle in Broadbeach, as there is a little playground there for our wildlings to run free.
Bar or place for a drink: North Burleigh Surf Club
Beach: Depends which way the wind’s blowing! Any of the sheltered beaches like Burleigh.

How do you choose to spend your days off?
Almost always at a park, with the fam, on our bikes and exploring the city.

Meet Liz Cantor

Channel 7 Presenter.

Liz Cantor (image supplied)

This local legend has won the hearts of the community with her vibrant energy and irresistible charm. From reporting on the waves as a surf enthusiast to gracing our screens as a TV presenter Liz Cantor needs no introduction (but we’ll give her one anyway). You can see her on Creek to CoastWeekenderPowerball and presenting weather for 7 News Gold Coast. You can also hear her beach and surf reports on 102.9 Hot Tomato. We chatted to the delightful Liz about why she loves her job and the Gold Coast.

How long have you been a Gold Coast local?
After finishing school I moved to the coast in 2001 (My family are from Noosa).

What do you love the most about the Gold Coast?
Hands down the lifestyle. I live for the outdoors and we have the best of it in every direction we turn. But also the people. It’s never lost on me that Gold Coasters hand out smiles so freely. In recent years I’m also loving the emergence of an arts and culture scene – from musicals to festivals!

Liz Cantor (image supplied)
Liz Cantor surfing (image supplied)

Tell us a bit about yourself.
From 16 years I was a competitive surfer for Billabong which enabled me to travel the world. Following this I made history as the first ever female surf judge to sit on the World Tour panel. Judging the likes of Layne Beachley and Lisa Anderson. This forged the way for women to participate in determining the world’s best surfers today. After a whirlwind year in 2005 which saw me win Channel 7’s reality show ‘The Mole’, I became a familiar face on Network Seven. These days I present the weather on 7News. The national Live Powerball draws, and on lifestyle shows Creek to Coast and Weekender. In 2016 I got married to Ryan and now my greatest job is as mum to two boys Kit and Fin and daughter Sky, and my dog Bear Grylls. When I’m not working I’m surfing or horse riding!

How did you get started in journalism and what inspired you to become a news presenter and reporter?
Finishing school it was a toss up between studying Marine Biology or Journalism, but I chose the later as my need to share stories and information is hard to suppress! I come from a family of storytellers. My mum was an English teacher and my relatives include camera operators, sports reporters, teachers, writers, authors and journalists. I guess you could say it’s in my DNA! I finished a degree in Journalism at Griffith University here on the coast. I did work experience at all the networks for years, before getting a foot in the door with Channel 7 through my competitive surfing on show Creek to Coast in 2005. I did a course with the Bureau of Meteorology before moving across to weather presenting.

Liz Cantor (image supplied)
Liz Cantor (image supplied)

Can you share any memorable experiences or stories that have stood out to you during your time as a news presenter and reporter?
From a news perspective presenting weather during the 2011 Brisbane floods is etched in my mind. I will never forget the pictures and how much impact the information I was sharing had during that time. On Creek to Coast swimming alongside Humpback whales was unforgettable. On Weekender my first time visiting outback Queensland was life changing. Seeing towns such as Winton and the way they live out there opened my eyes to a whole other side of Australia. I loved it!

What do you love most about your job?
Interviewing people. Especially everyday people! I get such a kick out of being able to draw out information and stories from others and then share it! EVERYONE has something to tell if you ask the right questions.

Liz Cantor (image supplied)
Liz Cantor (image supplied)

What advice would you give to aspiring journalists who are looking to enter the field?
Be ready to be married to the job for a few years! It’s a hard industry to break into, but if there is no other job option for your soul, if you’re there with passion and love for what you do, you will make it with persistence and a humble ego.

What are your Gold Coast favourites…
Café/coffee spot: I love coffee from Liquid Things, Miami
Restaurant: Date night for Ryan and I is preferably at Piatto
Bar or place for a drink: A spicy margarita at The Tropic, Burleigh because of the ocean view!
Beach: Like asking me to choose my favourite child… but cough, Rainbow Bay

How do you choose to spend your days off?
If it’s a weekday and the kids are at kindy/school, I’ll be horse riding with my best mate Tegan in the Gold Coast Hinterland. If I have the family with me then we’re surfing or at the beach and in the ocean in some form! If it’s an overcast day – my boys have me at Pizzey Park!

25.06.26
Today, Queensland Ballet in partnership with HOTA, Home of the Arts, Gold Coast, announced the world premiere of Elegantly Wasted, a bold new contemporary ballet set to the songs of INXS, opening at HOTA from 10 – 12 September, 2026.

Crack open a Tom Tate Tinnie: Crafted Festival celebrates 10 years with the Gold Coast’s most iconic can

15.06.26
Crafted Festival is turning ten, and instead of blowing out candles, it is cracking open something far more Gold Coast: the limited-edition Tom Tate Tinnie. Created to mark a decade of craft beer, live music, food and festival chaos on the Coast, the Tom Tate Tinnie is a Surf Lager with serious local character, a playful nod to the city’s larger-than-life Mayor and the laid-back, laugh-first spirit the Gold Coast does best. Original, refreshing and guaranteed to start a conversation, the can also gives back, with every sip helping support E Suarve.

Tom Tate said the tinnie was a fitting way to celebrate a festival that has become a true Gold Coast favourite. “I’ve always said the Gold Coast is the place to have a crack. In this case, beer lovers can crack open a Tom Tate Tinnie,” he said. “Like me, it’s original, has some character, is refreshing and a conversation starter. Have a few Tom Tate Tinnies and you may even end up speaking a bit of Tom Tate lingo. Congratulations to Burleigh Brewing, Crafted and Code Four on the 10th annual Crafted Festival. The best part of the TT Tinnie, with every sip, a donation goes to E Suarve. Make mine a slab.”

The big birthday bash lands at Kurrawa Park, Broadbeach on 12 September, with The Vanns headlining alongside Selve, Phil and The Blanks, SPACE&AGES and Laurel Hill, plus breweries, food vendors, Beer Yoga, Line Dancing, ping pong battles, BBQ demos, hot wing eating competitions and plenty of delicious mayhem. Crafted Festival co-founder Anna Cook said the tenth edition is shaping up to be the biggest yet, with the Gold Coast firmly established as its spiritual home and Newcastle and Melbourne now part of the festival’s next chapter.

Tickets are on sale now.

FIJI AIRWAYS TOUCHES DOWN ON THE GOLD COAST, LAUNCHING NEW INTERNATIONAL LINK

11.06.26
The first direct Fiji Airways Nadi – Gold Coast flight has officially landed, marking the start of a new international service linking the region with Fiji, North America and beyond.

The inaugural flight touched down at Gold Coast Airport (GCA) at 11:30am AEST today, and passengers were welcomed with a cultural celebration in GCA’s international arrivals hall.

Queensland Airports Limited (QAL) CEO Amelia Evans joined VIPs on the first flight including Fijian Prime Minister Sitiveni Rabuka and Fiji Airways Managing Director and CEO Paul Scurrah.

“This marks a new chapter for the Gold Coast, so it was incredibly special to be onboard and experience firsthand the connection we’ve worked so hard to deliver,” Ms Evans said.

“We continue to see growing demand for more international services from Gold Coast Airport, driven by the region’s growing population, affluence and global reputation.

“Fiji is a popular destination in its own right and also an important hub, making it easier for international visitors to better access the Gold Coast from key markets like Los Angeles, Honolulu and Canada.

“This is a valuable addition to our growing network, particularly as we look toward the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games, when Gold Coast Airport will play an important role as an international gateway.”

Fiji Airways will operate the service three times weekly on Mondays, Thursdays, and Saturdays, using its Boeing 737 MAX 8, with both economy and business class options available.

The Gold Coast’s most viral coffee bar has officially shut its doors

20.05.26
Sun Devil, the Americana-inspired caffeine haven tucked inside Tweed Heads vintage store Strange Days, has officially closed its doors, confirming the news via Instagram Stories today after weeks of speculation from loyal locals and confused passersby wondering where the lines had gone.

The viral coffee bar first built its cult following at Currumbin markets before opening its permanent home inside Strange Days in early 2025. Founded by Arizona-born Alex Boyce, Sun Devil quickly cemented itself as one of the Coast’s coolest coffee spots, slinging specialty cold brews and American summer-inspired sips alongside Strange Days’ signature vintage fashion finds.

Regulars flocked daily for favourites like the Devil’s Advocate, a sea salt and vanilla cold brew topped with pistachio cold foam, while non-coffee drinkers were hooked on creations like the Little Miss Sunshine sweet tea and the Arnold Palmer.

And now? It’s gone… sort of.

Sun Devil has confirmed with us that they’ll be reopening somewhere new soon, though exactly where remains under wraps for now.

In brighter news for locals, the Strange Days owner has confirmed the beloved bar space won’t be sitting empty for long, teasing that something “new and exciting” is already in the works.

“Just waiting to get all the correct council approvals, then we will get it up and running again, so watch this space,” Strange Days owner Sylvie told Inside Gold Coast.

So while the Gold Coast farewells one of its most viral coffee spots (for now), it sounds like there’s still plenty brewing behind the scenes.

One thing’s for sure, we’ll be keeping a very close eye on both Sun Devil’s next move and whatever fun new concept lands inside Strange Days next.

Joe’s Deli Drops Fourth Location at Robina as Queensland’s Sandwich Scene Heats Up

07.05.26
Joe’s Deli is officially in its expansion era — and the next drop is landing on the Gold Coast. The cult-favourite sandwich slingers have announced its fourth location, set to open this July at Robina Town Centre’s The Kitchens, marking their second Gold Coast outpost and second opening of 2026.

Known for bringing unapologetic New York energy to the Australian sandwich game, Joe’s Deli has built a loyal following off the back of stacked, no-nonsense sandwiches, fast-paced service, and venues that feel like they’ve been ripped straight from a Lower East Side block. The Robina opening continues that momentum, with the brand doubling down on its signature diner aesthetic — think a heavy hit of 90’s nostalgia that turns a quick lunch into a full-blown vibe.

Landing in The Kitchens precinct, the new venue is set to be a go-to for locals chasing the kind of sandwich that lives up to the hype. It’s big flavours, bold personality, and a space designed to keep people coming back — not just for the food, but for the feeling.

And apparently this isn’t the last you’ll hear from Joe’s Deli anytime soon, with whispers of more Gold Coast venues in the works for later this year — watch this space.

Sleep is cancelled: GC’s First 24-Hour Brunch lands this weekend

1.04.26
Gold Coast, we hope you’re well rested… because you won’t be for long.

In what might be the most dangerous (and delicious) concept we’ve ever seen, a brand new venue is bringing 24-hour bottomless brunch to the Gold Coast, and yes, it’s exactly what it sounds like.

Launching this weekend in a soon-to-be-revealed Broadbeach location, the experience promises no sitting time limits, free-flowing cocktails and a menu that quite literally never sleeps.

We’re talking:
• Espresso martinis on tap from sunrise to… sunrise
• Margaritas, rosé and spritz flowing around the clock
• A rotating menu of brunch classics, from truffle scrambled eggs to midnight pancakes
• Late-night “recovery” snacks

According to the venue’s founder, the idea came from one simple observation: “Why should brunch have a time limit?”
Honestly… fair.

Naturally, demand is expected to be slightly unhinged, with a waitlist already forming ahead of opening.

Too good to be true? Yep. Sorry folks, 24-hour brunch isn’t a thing (mainly for the safety of the Gold Coast). Happy April Fools!

As an apology, please enjoy our list of bottomless brunches on the Gold Coast.

Hard FIZZ debuts vodka lime & soda amid pivot from seltzer

24.03.26
Independent beverage brand Hard FIZZ is unveiling its first new flavour in almost a year, a delicious vodka lime and soda, as spirit based RTD’s continue to trend nationally.

The drinks maker is pivoting to vodka amid a 12.7% surge in consumption of the light spirit originally releasing lemonade and pineapple blends – but are now turning their hand at the citrusy favourite, which is widely claimed to be Australia’s most popular ‘after dark’ cocktail.

The brand plans for the new flavour to be in market in the next few months. It’s also producing a run of its best selling watermelon flavour in vodka form, marking the beginning of the end of seltzer as its core range.

The new 4% ABV blends also lean into the ‘better for you’ movement with just 80 calories per 330mL can and zero sugar.

“Vodka RTD’s have been flying off the shelves of late – specifically, low calorie, no sugar varieties – and we wanted to be at the forefront of that,” CEO Wade Tiller says.

“It’s actually really interesting, the growth of ‘healthier’ alcoholic beverages in recent years.

“In 2021, just 21% of all vodka RTD’s on the market were classed as ‘better for you’ and that’s now up to 45% – that’s people voting with their feet. “Vodka lime and soda is a fan favourite at the bar, but our version is distinctly FIZZ and doesn’t have any of the nasties.”

It’s set to be a busy few months for Hard FIZZ with the brand also about to go on tour with their celebrity owner, Grammy nominated music producer, DJ FISHER, and his national Out 2 Lunch roadshow. “It’s going to be a lot of fun,” Tiller says.

BIG4 Gold Coast Holiday Park has been named Australia’s best caravan and holiday park at the 2025 Qantas Australian Tourism Awards, marking the fourth consecutive year a BIG4 property has taken the national title.

The Qantas Australian Tourism Awards celebrated excellence across 26 categories, with more than 170 finalists competing for national recognition. BIG4 Gold Coast Holiday Park claimed Gold, securing its first national title in recognition of its exceptional guest experience and commitment to continually raising the bar. The win extends an extraordinary run for the BIG4 network, following three consecutive Gold wins and Hall of Fame induction by BIG4 Adventure Whitsunday Resort in 2024.

Set across 32 acres of lush sub-tropical gardens in Helensvale, BIG4 Gold Coast Holiday Park has built a reputation as a resort-style destination where families, couples and adventurers can experience everything the Gold Coast has to offer. Elk’s new autumn menu is deliciously playful!

10.03.26
Autumn has landed, and Elk Espresso is having a little fun with the season. The new menu leans into fresh, local produce – figs, blueberries, sweet potato, celeriac, and stunning mixed mushrooms – letting the ingredients do most of the talking.

Some early favourites are already stealing the spotlight: tiramisu waffles piled high with cold brew caramel, silky grape panna cotta finished with roasted grapes and Pomelo Gel, and the addictive “crack” sweet potato chips on the miso sweet potato dish. Drinks get in on the fun too, with three new clouds: blueberry matcha, miso caramel, and coco pop cheesecake.

From hearty breakfast bowls and Korean fried chicken to indulgent sweet treats, Elk’s autumn menu is playful, produce-driven, and full of little surprises that make brunch unforgettable.

Gold Coast crowned Australia’s favourite holiday destination

9.03.26
All that glitters can be found on the Gold Coast – the country’s top domestic travel destination for 2026, as voted by Australian in a new poll by iSelect.

The beachside beauty was the jewel in Queensland’s tourism crown, according to the survey of 1,002 Australians – with 11.4% of people naming the region, or its beaches, as their favourite local getaway.

Melbourne’s “Every Bit Different” campaign also made waves, helping the city out-rank Sydney with 11.1% of the vote thanks to its rich cultural offerings.

Queensland locations dominated the list, with Brisbane coming in fourth, followed by the Sunshine Coast in fifth and Carins seventh on the list.

Top domestic travel destinations, voted by Aussies:
• Gold Coast
• Melbourne
• Sydney
• Brisbane
• Sunshine Coast
• Hobart
• Cairns
• Adelaide
• Byron Bay
• Tasmania

iSelect’s Sophie Ryan said the winning formula for holidays was simple: sun, sand and surf – all of which the Gold Coast delivers in spades.

“We’re all so busy with work and life commitments, when it comes to holiday planning – most of us want it to be stress-free,” Ms Ryan said.

“With a destination like the Gold Coast, you’re spoilt for choice when it comes to relaxing, and there’s plenty to do if you feel like being active.”

14.02.26
Mudgeeraba is set to score a new hospitality, health and retail precinct in early 2027, with the announcement of TEAK Mudgeeraba, bringing in new restaurants, bars, retail and wellness businesses to the area.

Featuring space for 14 newly built commercial spaces, TEAK Mudgeeraba aims to expand on Mudgeeraba’s growing appetite as the Gold Coast’s latest food scene, with a longtime favourite already onboard.

After calling Merrimac home for over 50 years, The Australian German Club has taken the anchor site for the relaunch of its famous restaurant and beer hall. Due to open in early 2027, the European inspired club will boast over 200 seats, with a focus on regular live music and special events throughout the year.

Known for its traditional German menu, diners can expect the return of popular items such as pork knuckle, schnitzels, sausages and pretzels. For those wanting a bite closer to home, the menu will also feature more ‘Aussie inspired’ plates such as fish and chips, chicken parmigiana, Caesar salad and a 250gm eye fillet steak. Coming in for a cold stein or two? The newly built 30m bar will have over ten local and international beers on tap, as well as a range of wines, cocktails and nonalcoholic drinks.

With construction already underway, locals can expect to be pulling up a seat by next summer.

A taste of Britain is coming to the Gold Coast, with Artesian Hospitality confirming plans to open a new English-style pub, The Fig ’n’ Fox, in Surfers Paradise ahead of Easter.

The venue will mark a significant milestone for the group, representing Artesian Hospitality’s first freehold property acquisition and the first public step in a broader pipeline of projects currently underway.

Located on the corner of Orchid and Elkhorn avenues, the site will undergo a full-scale redevelopment and be reborn as a modern British pub designed to trade from day through late night. Plans include extensive indoor and outdoor dining and drinking areas, a dedicated games space featuring pool tables and electronic darts, and a large basement live music venue capable of hosting hundreds of patrons.

Food will play a central role in the pub’s identity, with Artesian promising a classic English menu anchored by what it says will be “the best Sunday Roast the Gold Coast has ever seen.”

The menu is being developed by Artesian’s Group Executive Chef Richard Harris, formerly of the Rockpool Group, who hails from the UK and says authenticity is critical to getting an English pub right.

Burleigh’s glow-up is coming (and the City wants your two cents)

3.02.26
The City has unveiled plans to revitalise one of the Gold Coast’s most iconic foreshore strips, with everything from a rebuilt seawall to shiny new picnic spots, wider paths and even the potential for a swimming lagoon or playground at Rudd Park.

At the heart of the Burleigh project is a major upgrade to the ageing seawall between Justins Park and Mowbray Park, which has quietly been holding the line against erosion for more than 40 years. Recent investigations show it needs a full rebuild to protect the dunes, beach access and that postcard-perfect coastal beauty Burleigh is famous for.

But it’s not all about defence. The vision also includes a wider Oceanway for walkers, riders and scooters, a new pedestrian promenade under the Norfolk Pines at Justins Park, upgraded barbecues and picnic facilities, and refreshed parklands across Justins, Mowbray, John Laws and Rudd Parks. While some car parks may shift around to create more open space, the City says there’ll be no net loss of parking across the precinct.

Community consultation is now open, giving locals and lovers of Burleigh the chance to weigh in before anything is locked in. If you’ve ever had an opinion about the foreshore (and let’s be real, who hasn’t), now’s the time to have your say. Consultation runs from 3–24 February 2026 at gchaveyoursay.com.au/hub-page/burleigh-foreshore

Viral croissanterie Lune is coming to Pacific Fair

22.01.26
Gold Coast, consider this your flaky little warning. The hoarding is up, the whispers are loud, and the pastry gods have answered our prayers, viral croissanterie Lune is opening its first-ever Gold Coast outpost at Pacific Fair.

Yes, that Lune. The cult-favourite croissant slingers known for impossibly laminated pastries and internet-breaking hype. While it’ll be a few months before the ovens are fired up, this is very much a clear-your-calendar, party people kind of announcement.

The new store will be located outside Sephora at Pacific Fair, meaning your future shopping trips are about to get dangerously buttery. Think retail therapy followed by pastry therapy. Balance.

No official opening date just yet, but trust us, this is one to get emotionally prepared for. Stretch those queueing legs. Practice your croissant pronunciation. And start manifesting a pain au chocolat the size of your head.

Cibaria Noosa Opens It’s Doors: Coastal Italian Dining Arrives on Hastings Street

24.12.25
Hastings Street welcomes a new calibre of coastal Italian dining as Cibaria Noosa opens at the recently unveiled Elysium Noosa Resort.

Following the runaway success of Cibaria Manly at Elysium Noosa’s sister property, Manly Pacific, the Pavoni’s continue their Italian seaside journey north, introducing their signature passion, infectious energy and celebrated cuisine to the Sunshine Coast.

Channeling the warmth and easy buzz of an Italian piazza, Cibaria Noosa is a 120-seat trattoria that honours the art of eating and the European way of socialising – where good food, wine and company converge in a lively meeting place.

Positioned adjacent to Elysium’s pool, you’ll discover Cibaria’s 60-seat Terrazza, an extension of the buzzing dining room, which offers a tranquil dining experience perfect for long lunches and balmy evenings. Facing Hastings Street is the 100-seat Bar Capri, an all-day destination designed for slow mornings, long afternoons and vibrant evenings.

Designed by Mitchell & Eades, the interiors draw inspiration from the sun-drenched confidence of the Mediterranean coast, expressed through materials that feel gently bleached by salt air, sunblock tones, citrus hues, terracotta, cobbled textures and crystal-blue sea. The result is a breezy coastal piazza that feels relaxed yet layered, bright and energised, where the easy rhythm of Mediterranean life meets the refined elegance of Noosa.

The Belongil brings a new beat to Byron

17.11.25
Byron Bay is about to meet its newest obsession: The Belongil, a coastal dining precinct from acclaimed chef and restaurateur Shannon Bennett, opening this December.

After stepping back from restaurants to dive into the tech world, Bennett is returning with a renewed spark and a vision shaped by a year spent travelling from Victoria to Queensland, meeting the growers, fishers and makers behind Australia’s best produce. That journey – dust, ocean spray, farm sheds and all – now lives on the menu.

Created alongside his Belongil Beach neighbour Glen Norman, The Belongil brings together four venues, each offering its own flavour of community-minded hospitality. There’s FEU, built around woodfire cooking and big sensory moments; The Bistro, a relaxed spot for long lunches and sunset gatherings; Blind Tiger, a hidden members’ bar dedicated to rare spirits and real connection; and The Kiosk, the barefoot-friendly go-to for sunrise coffees and post-swim snacks.

For Bennett, it’s a return to instinct, curiosity and neighbourhood warmth. “I loved the old Belongil Italian, and I felt the area was missing something since it closed,” he says. “This is my way of bringing that energy back.”

The Belongil opens December in Byron Bay. A fresh chapter for the community starts here.

Sueño Rooftop launches weekend brunch with tableside Cesar and bottomless margaritas

10.11.25
The Gold Coast’s favourite rooftop, Sueño, is bringing a taste of Tijuana to the coast with the launch of its new Weekend Brunch, a long-table celebration of sunshine, sea air, and Latin flavours, every Saturday and Sunday from 12pm – 2pm.

At the heart of the menu is a dish steeped in history: the Cesar salad, born in Tijuana in the 1920s and made famous for its theatrical tableside preparation. At Sueño, the ritual continues, with chefs creating the salad in front of guests, just as it was nearly a century ago.

The brunch menu is designed for sharing, with highlights including freshly shucked oysters with aji mignonette, burrata with Mexican onions and pequin chilli, watermelon ceviche, shellfish rolls, and chargrilled chicken.

Guests can elevate the experience with a Bottomless Brunch Package ($149pp) featuring two hours of unlimited Tommy’s Margaritas, Mimosas, our favourite House Wines, and Sueño’s own Chango Cerveza-style Lager. A non-alcoholic package ($119pp) is also available, with Zero-proof Cocktails, Hiatus Non-alcoholic Beer, and Soft Drinks.

TIFFANY JONES TAKE THE PASS: A NEW EXECUTIVE CHEF ARRIVES AT CRYSTALBROOK BYRON

3.11.25
Crystalbrook Byron has welcomed Tiffany Jones as its new Executive Chef, bringing more than 30 years of experience across some of Australia’s most acclaimed restaurants, luxury hotels, and high-end catering. Known for her ingredient-first philosophy and deep respect for seasonality, Jones’s arrival signals an exciting new chapter for Forest Byron Bay, the resort’s signature restaurant, as well as its conference and events offering.

Under Tiffany’s leadership, the restaurant will continue to evolve its farm-to-plate ethos, working even more closely with local growers, fishers, and artisans to create a menu that feels distinctly of Byron.

“There’s something special about working in a place where you can smell the salt air and hear the forest while you cook,” says Jones. “The new menu at Forest will lean into what’s already here — incredible local ingredients, strong producer relationships, and a real sense of place. I want guests to feel that in every dish, from the native plum emulsion on the kangaroo carpaccio to the burnt honey we harvest on-site for dessert.”

In addition to her restaurant and hotel credentials, Tiffany has worked on shows like Zumbo’s Just Desserts and The Great Australian Bake Off as a technical chef and mentor. Her desserts have featured in China Eastern Airlines’ first-class menus, and she has consulted for top-tier venues including Longrain Melbourne.

Tiffany’s food philosophy remains simple: let the ingredients speak for themselves.

With her at the helm, Crystalbrook Byron and Forest are set to further establish as must-visit destinations for food lovers, event planners, and travellers seeking an immersive culinary experience, with a menu that is grounded in place.

COSTA AGAVE: A NEW KIND OF AGAVE SPIRIT FROM THE FOUNDERS OF COSTA TACO

10.09.25
Australia’s shelves have never been more crowded with agave spirits. Celebrity-backed tequilas, boutique mezcal imports, glossy bottles promising Mexican mystique – they’ve all helped fuel the category’s boom. But behind the noise, a quieter story is emerging. One not about trends, but about heritage, connection, and a new way forward for agave in Australia.

That story belongs to Costa Agave – the debut spirit from Nick and Matt Stanley, the brothers behind Costa Taco.

“We didn’t want this to be just another bottle on a shelf,” adds Matt Stanley. “It’s about creating an experience. About bringing people into the story, letting them taste the difference, and connecting with the culture behind it. That’s why Costa Agave will only be available at Costa venues – to keep the chain of respect intact, from the agave fields to the glass.”

Costa Agave is more than a spirit. It’s the continuation of Costa’s ethos: to honour heritage, support communities, and share Mexican culture with honesty and heart.

Costa Agave has officially launched across all venues – Broadbeach, Palm Beach and Byron Bay.

DJ FISHER remixes Hard FIZZ by adding vodka

25.08.25
Grammy nominated music producer FISHER is ‘remixing’ his Gold Coast-based Hard FIZZ alcohol brand by adding vodka to its already popular range of hard seltzers.

Hard FIZZ is releasing two new flavours using Australian made vodka – lemonade and pineapple – both with a 4% alcohol volume, equalling one standard drink per can.

FISHER says it’s been a long time coming for the brand which launched at the height of the COVID pandemic.

“Most people don’t know this, but we almost did a vodka first – and God knows there were a lot of conversations about that – but seltzers were all the rage back in 2020, so we jumped on that bandwagon to get things going,” he reveals.

The new blend will hit bars and bottle shops in September and will be available nationally throughout over 2000 shops and venues including Dan Murphy’s, Cellarbrations and Liquor Legends, Liquorland and BWS stores in Queensland.

SAY G’DAY TO BEUDI: A NEW CHAPTER FOR AUSTRALIAN AGAVE SPIRITS

4.08.25
Born from the simple wish to create a flourishing home for Agave here in Australia, four industry veterans have embarked on a mission to champion Australian distilled agave, native ingredients and local flavours.

Launching this August, with two core products and two RTDs, hero product, Beudi Blanco, is a fresh take on classic agave spirits, like tequila, while Beudi Margi Spirit honours the classic Margarita – an Aussie first offering ready-to-drink by just adding fresh lime, ice and shake thanks to Beudi Blanco with Sunrise Lime Liqueur. And for the ‘can in hand’ moment, the Sparkling Margi RTD gives light, fizzy refreshment while the Bushwater RTD pairs the Desert Lime, soda and Blanco.

“We’re building a brand that is true to who we are – approachable, premium and unapologetically Australian. We’re serious about good drinks, driven by locality and sustainability, while being down to earth and proud of our land”, adds Jack Connor, Co-Founder and award-winning bar owner of Rosella’s in Burleigh Heads.

A carefully selected number of hero bars along the East Coast will be the first to pour Beudi, bringing the brand’s premium-yet-playful energy to eager early adopters.

The four Founders, Jack Connor, Pat Coulson, Dane Pitman and Tom Ruhl collectively have more than 50 years’ experience in the Australian craft beer and spirits industry and believe the time has finally come to build the future classic Australian distilled agave brand.

Queensland ballet and HOTA forge bold new partnership with exclusive world premiere of Elastic Hearts.

16.06.25
In a powerful alignment of artistic ambition and cultural leadership, Queensland Ballet and HOTA, Home of the Arts have today announced a landmark three-year partnership that will see the creation of three music-led world premieres exclusive to the Gold Coast.

The partnership launches with the debut of Elastic Hearts, a genre-defying dance experience choreographed and directed by Garry Stewart, featuring the music of global pop icon Sia, reimagined with cinematic power by the Queensland Symphony Orchestra.

This collaboration unites two of the state’s most dynamic arts organisations in a shared commitment to pushing artistic boundaries, nurturing Australian talent, and delivering unforgettable large-scale productions. It signals a powerful new era for contemporary performance on the Gold Coast, positioning the city as a leading destination for world-class cultural experiences.

Elastic Hearts is raw, radiant, and unrelentingly human — a visually arresting production that explores nature, creativity, and resilience through movement, sound and light. At its centre is the commanding figure of ‘Gaia’, a matriarchal spirit invoking the cycles of life in a performance that is both intimate and epic.

Elastic Hearts will feature at HOTA, Home of the Arts for four performances of the limited season.

The controversial and completely unapologetic Ladies Lounge is coming to the Gold Coast

21.05.25
In what can only be described as a massive cultural coup, the Gold Coast is officially welcoming Ladies Lounge, the fiercely feminist, unapologetically fabulous, and legally legendary artwork by Kirsha Kaechele — as part of BLEACH Festival 2025*.

The Gold Coast is set to be the first place outside of MONA to host this velvet-drenched, eyebrow-raising, wildly immersive experience. And we’re not being dramatic when we say: this is huge.

Ladies Lounge is more than an artwork, it’s a living, breathing installation where women are the art, the audience, and everything in between. Expect champagne. Expect opulence. Expect performance, poetry, talks, unexpected dining and surprise encounters. And yes, some boys may be allowed in… for domestic arts lessons or reparations only.

Fresh off a wild year that included legal battles and front-page news, the Lounge is now headed for sunnier skies. After briefly reopening in Hobart, Kaechele has chosen the Gold Coast to kick off the Lounge’s national era, and we’re here for it.

As the buzz builds around BLEACH* 2025, with Michael Zavros as Artistic Director and HOTA, Kurrawa Park and Emerald Lakes as the ultimate festival playgrounds, the arrival of Ladies Lounge adds a dose of glamour, cheek, and controversy to the stacked program. The full BLEACH Festival 2025 program just dropped. Click here for more details.

There’s a fresh face of fast food in town: Australia’s first Wendy’s restaurant opens in Surfers Paradise tomorrow!

14.01.25
Wendy’s® has arrived with a fresh take on fast food, featuring its iconic, fresh beef square hamburger patties and a chicken tender offering made specifically for the Australian palate. The iconic hamburger brand, known for its sharp-witted social media content, will officially open its doors on Cavill Avenue in Surfers Paradise, Gold Coast on January 15, 2025.

This grand opening marks the first of many Wendy’s restaurants in Australia with new master franchisee, Flynn Group, and the beginning of a significant expansion across the country.

Australian burger lovers can finally experience Wendy’s signature menu items, including the Classic Double, Baconmator™, and Spicy Chicken Sandwich. The real star of the show is Wendy’s double hand-breaded chicken tenders. Made with premium 100% Australian chicken, these crispy, juicy tenders were specifically crafted after many iterations and feedback from Australian diners. Demonstrating the brand’s dedication to fresh, quality and mouth-watering food, each chicken fillet will be hand-breaded in restaurant.

Diners can choose chicken selections like Homestyle or a fiery new signature spicy recipe served as tenders in a 3-piece or 5-piece, in a burger or a wrap. Aussies can choose to dress it up with a creamy ranch dressing or opt for the all-new signature dipping sauce – available for the first time globally in the new flagship Gold Coast restaurant.

For the perfect sweet treat, Australian’s can finally indulge in the Wendy’s Frosty® dessert on home soil – available in chocolate or vanilla – thick enough to use a spoon, smooth enough to use a straw. If that isn’t enough, customers can complete their meal with Hot & Crispy natural-cut, skin-on, sea-salted Fries – loaded with cheese, chili and cheese or bacon and cheese.

Creative industries precinct moving forward at Miami

14.11.24
A creative industries precinct is set to take shape on the Gold Coast with legendary local filmmaker Baz Luhrmann’s production company Bazmark providing the City with strategic advice.

Councillors recently resolved to support the establishment of the creative industries precinct which would be located at the City’s Miami Depot site. It is planned that the site, deemed surplus to the City’s requirements, be repurposed to accommodate a mix of creative industries including tech, visual effects, gaming and screen industries, innovation, retail and residential uses.

Mayor Tom Tate said a creative industries precinct would be another boost for the city’s booming screen industry which generates more than $571 million a year for the local economy.

Bazmark relocated their global head office to the Gold Coast and have a pipeline of major productions planned which would generate hundreds of millions of dollars to the local economy.

The reported value add of creative and performance arts to the Gold Coast economy has seen positive trends over the past decade with figures reported showing an annual contribution of over $88 million in 2023. It is estimated that over five years, Bazmark’s pipeline of projects for the Gold Coast would represent a $740 million investment with a forecast of 8,700 jobs.

The news comes at an exciting time of growth for the Gold Coast industry, following the announcement of Shadowbox Studios as the preferred proponent to deliver a state-of-the-art screen production facility at Yatala.

“We are excited to bring the NFL Academy program to Australia and the Asia-Pacific region – underlining the league’s ambitions and commitment to grow the sport and the fan base in the market in the long term,” said Charlotte Offord, general manager NFL Australia and New Zealand. “The NFL Academy, alongside the ongoing investment and development in NFL Flag, will not only see more boys and girls engage with our sport, but offers more pathways for young athletes to play the game in the region in the years ahead.”

‘Final piece of the puzzle’ in Tallebudgera Creek upgrades

3.4.24
The Tallebudgera Creek glow-up continues with the boardwalk undergoing a $3.4 million upgrade. The boardwalk follows other improvements in the popular beachfront location including upgrades on the nearby training wall and Tallebudgera Creek Park, which was completed in February.

“A new and improved boardwalk will be the final piece of the puzzle in our Tallebudgera Creek upgrades,” said Mayor Tom Tate.

“Tallebudgera Creek is one of the coast’s most popular spots for locals and visitors to enjoy the natural beauty of our city.”

“The improvements are crucial to accommodate a growing number of people and improving safety and aesthetics, as well as reducing future maintenance and boosting protection against erosion impacts from floods, storms and king tides.”

A new 4-metre-wide deck will replace the existing 2 metre boardwalk and new features will include seating, lighting and a viewing platform. The upgrade also includes new landscaping with 30 new trees being planted alongside a range of coastal vegetation. There will be new support piers constructed and a small rock wall added to provide erosion protection.

The boardwalk renewal and upgrade is supported by an Australian Government grant totalling $2,473,650 through the Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program.

Work on the boardwalk is taking place Monday to Friday from 7am to 5pm with access along the boardwalk and beach between Tallebudgera Creek Park and dog off leash area temporarily closed. A temporary detour via the Gold Coast Highway and nearby surf club is available during construction.

The Tallebudgera Creek boardwalk project is expected to be completed in August this year.

The taxi zone at Gold Coast Airport has also been relocated to the front of the Southern Terminal Expansion, providing greater space and flexibility for drivers as the precinct extends. “For our customers who prefer to take a taxi, we’ve dedicated a brand-new area to them as well with seating and shade in front of our new terminal building,” Ms Charlton said.

Gold Coast seafood mainstay Peter’s Fish Market set for significant premises upgrade on the Southport Spit.

9.2.24
Following on from the major development currently underway at The Southport Spit, Gold Coast’s most loved Peter’s Fish Market has secured the plans for larger and upgraded premises. The permanent and enhanced establishment will serve to complement the newly refreshed Southport Spit as well as cement its place as a tourism destination.

The new build will feature an increased sales floor area, increased covered dining while maintaining the classic local “fish and chippie” that patrons have loved for over 30 years. The redevelopment will overlook the Broadwater, effectively showcasing the best that the Gold Coast has to offer. In doing so Peter’s Fish Market will continue to serve the local and tourist community, support local economic growth, and provide further job opportunities for the Gold Coast.

The existing business will continue to trade as usual, with the new build expected to be completed by Christmas 2025.

Their culinary expertise and commitment to quality are evident in every aspect of Bu Deli. This isn’t just a butter; it’s a statement. Don’t Dairy, an exciting new player in the drinks industry with a mission to shake things up!

1.2.24
Based in Coolangatta, Don’t Dairy officially launched on Monday, January 22nd, offering a product range that includes three ready-to-drink Oat Milk varieties, a Chilled Double Shot Coffee Latte and Mocha, and a Chilled Chocolate – all made in Murwillumbah, NSW. The entire Don’t Dairy range is dairy-free, with no added sugar or preservatives and can be stored at room temperature for up to 6 months (though best served chilled).

The journey began on an epic road trip through Western Australia when the founders of Don’t Dairy faced disappointment after disappointment while searching for a decent cuppa during a fourteen-hour drive. Frustrated with the lack of dairy-free options and tired of the same old sugary drinks, they decided to take matters into their own hands and create something better.

The owners, Matty Roberts, manager of MasterChef judge Andy Allen, and his wife, interior designer Monique Luchterhand, felt like this was a calling for them. “It was so important not to knock the building down to make way for another apartment tower” says Roberts. “We wanted to keep the spirit of the Cheshire Cat alive in Palm Beach – it’s a building that has been around for such a long time here, with so many classic stories to tell of its bygone past…so now we’re focused on adding to that tapestry with a new chapter in the life of ‘the Cat’…”

She is a force to be reckoned with and she is the female voice behind Gold Coast’s number one radio Breakfast Show on 1029 Hot Tomato. Add to that, she is the newly appointed ‘Tanya’ in the upcoming Gold Coast production of MAMMA MIA! The Musical (produced by GC Local Matt Ward). Emily Jade O’Keeffe is a woman of many talents, so it was only fitting that we interviewed the Gold Coast sweetheart ahead of her taking to The Star Gold Coast’s stage from Saturday 19th June this year. We chat about her career, her loves of the Gold Coast and what it will be like preparing for her new role!

How long have you been a Gold Coast local?
I’ve lived here on and off for 18 years now, the last stint has been for the last 9 years.

Tell us a bit about your career to date.
I’ve been working in the media for the last 25 years. I started in Tasmania in radio and moved all around the country for work; from Tassie to Townsville and everywhere in between. My highlights have been launching 1029 Hot Tomato and having a number one Breakfast Show – Galey, Emily Jade and Christo – here for 7 years now. I also launched Nova in Brisbane and was No 1 for 4 years there. Earlier on, I was working on Mornings with Kerri-Anne and with Channel 9 for 5 years. I also wrote during that time for the Courier Mail for a number of years both in print and being one of their first bloggers (when blogging became a big thing) as ‘Emily Everywhere’ which became their most-read blog.

What career achievement are you most proud of?
I don’t have one I’m most proud of, I’ve been happy with every stage and what they all led to each time. My career has kept me busy and happy and fulfilled at every step. I feel really blessed to have been able to evolve and change and grab each opportunity as it came.

Growing up you performed in a variety of musicals and have been described as a self-confessed ‘drama nerd’, what initially drew you to the stage?
Both my grandfathers were performers. My grandad on my mum’s side was very musical and in bands and my grandad on my dad’s side was an amateur actor. That trickled down to both my Dad and Mum. I watched Dad act in local theatre and Mum play piano daily, so I was always around music and drama and I guess it was both nature and nurture in my family. I then continued the tradition but monetised it in the end by making it my full-time career.

What are you looking forward to most about your upcoming role as ‘Tanya’ in the Gold Coast production of MAMMA MIA! The Musical?
It’s come at a time where I needed some healing and fun after a marriage breakdown and as I get used to a new normal and new family dynamic, I really was searching for some light at the end of the tunnel. This gives me a chance to laugh and have fun with new amazing people and do what I love best, which is perform and make people smile.

What is your all-time favourite ABBA song and why?
That’s like asking who is your favourite child – I can’t answer that one. I love them all! ABBA Gold was the first CD I ever got. I got it for Christmas and if CDs could wear out, that one nearly did.

How much preparation goes into playing your part as ‘Tanya’?
I think Tanya is a lot like me, so some parts will come naturally, she’s cheeky, fun but loving and a fierce friend and that’s me. I just need to nail the dance moves and singing, rehearsals start soon so I’ll let you know.

What are your Gold Coast favourites…
Café: Double Barrel Benowa
Coffee spot: Randy Warhol Southport
Restaurant: Kiyomi at The Star
Bar or pub for a drink: Nineteen at The Star

How do you choose to spend your weekends?
I just love keeping it low key with lots of family time with the kids, parents and friends of my kids which involve good cheese and wine in friends backyards or my backyard while the kids play in the pool or run around having adventures, while we chill and chat.
