So Wednesday rolls around for another week, and your mid-week treat aka oat latte has failed to put the usual pep in your step. You need a little help putting the happy in happy hump day. We have the tea on the best way to bust the mid-week monotony, and thankfully you can pack the credit card away because there will be no ‘add to cart’ required for this dopamine hit.

Because sometimes in life, the best things are free. Or free entry, as the case may be.

Broadbeach’s iconic destination for all things entertainment, fun times and frivolity is back at it with its usual tricks. And by ‘usual tricks’ we mean putting on a darn good night out. If you guessed The Star, you’d be right because we all know there’s never any shortage of fun things to keep us flocking back like seagulls to a chip. Only this time, we’re proposing a little mid-week morale boost, without the instant regret that comes with polishing off an entire block of chocolate in one night (not speaking from experience).

Your mid-week essential viewing just got an upgrade, skip the Friends re-runs and settle in for some fresh lol’s where you haven’t re-watched the punch line 397 times coz the Atrium Bar’s Wednesday night Comedy Club is the comedic relief you never knew your week needed. And let’s be honest, ‘wE wErE oN a BrEaK’ was only funny the first 396 times anyway.

Bringing all-round hilarity to venues up and down the GC, the Based Comedy crew present us a new line up of local and national comedians at the Atrium Bar every Wednesday night. Plus, side splitting laughs basically count as an ab workout, or at least it should based off the way they feel the next day, so were ticking a lot of feel good boxes here.

Pull up a chair, order yourself some schnaaacks and let the ROFLcopters fly, because you anything brought to you by the legends at Byron Bay Brewery is a pretty good indication of great times for ale involved.

And since you’re getting a show and an (almost) workout for the bargain price of zero dollars, refuelling after all those belly laughs with some tasty snacks seems an absolute no-brainer. Wrap your laughing gear around a plate of Fries with aioli or Seasoned wedges with sour cream and sweet chilli. Because true potato enthusiasts know although it’s technically the same vegetable, how chunky you want your chippies to come is totally dependent on your mood.

Chips not tickling your fancy? We’re reserving judgement, but only because $10 pizzas are on the menu. We’re yet to meet a Pepperoni with Napoli sauce, red onion and oregano we don’t like, but a pizza the Roasted pumpkin, mushroom, capsicum, olives is a pretty serious contender no matter your vego status. And if approaching your daily sodium intake has you feeling on the thirsty side, word on the street is there are also some tempting drink specials to rival the absolute steal that is the $10 pizzas.

In excellent news for the organisationally challenged among us, you can’t forget to book since it’s walk-ins only. So just mosy on in and prepare to bid adieu to your butt (on account of the non-stop LMAO’s). Doors open from 6.30pm so you can stake your claim on the plushest looking bean bag, with the laffs set to roll(ing on the floor laughing) from 7.00pm – 9.00pm.

And would you look at that, our mid-weeks just got a whole lot more interesting.

When: Wednesdays, doors open 6.30pm
Where: Atrium Bar, The Star Gold Coast, 1 Casino Drive, Broadbeach

Garden Kitchen & Bar
Garden Kitchen & Bar is the gift that keeps on giving and right now, they’re literally offering Gifts from The Garden special offers. Buy four or more main meals from the tantalising menu and receive a complimentary bottle of 750ml Whispering Angel Rosé. Got a bigger crew? No probs, coz buy eight or more main meals and score a whopping 1.5L Magnum Whispering Angel Rosé on the house. Available for lunch on Friday and Sunday, and for dinner on Sunday, Monday and Thursday, it would be just plain rude not rosé all day (and/or night)!

Also not to be missed is Garden Kitchen & Bar’s Winter Warmer 3-Course Menu. Start proceedings with Parsnip and Leek Soup with flaked smoked salmon, herb oil, and toasted sourdough, before moving into a hearty serve of Slow-cooked Beef Cheeks with fried garlic chats, broccolini, roasted baby carrots, gremolata crumb, and red wine jus. This tastes as amazing as it sounds, but the ice cream on the sticky date pud is, well, Sticky Date Pudding with pineapple, caramel and vanilla ice cream #CheatDayIncoming.

Cucina Vivo
Nothing offsets the winter blues like a satisfying Chicken Cacciatore which is basically a warm hearty hug on a plate. Thankfully Cucina Vivo, our numero uno local Italian haunt, heard our cries and made this crowd classic their monthly special! Serving up slow cooked chicken Maryland, San Marzano tomato, winter vegetables, and white polenta, it’s a tried and tested winner winner chicken dinner!

Uncle Su
Our fave uncle is at it again, this time with limited edition Yum Cha lunch specials in June. Think Coral Trout Congee, Sliced Coral Trout with enoki mushrooms, Pork and Prawn Chilli Dumplings, Quail Egg Chicken Shu Mai, Shredded Coconut Bun, and Chinese Doughnut and no word of a lie, nobody does does doughnuts better than this award-winning Chinese showstopper.

Billy Elliot The Musical
When you look up ‘inspiring’ in the dictionary, we’re pretty sure it says ‘Billy Elliot’. If you loved the early naughties juggernaut flick, watching the stage adaptation is like going from George Clooney in his ER era (v impressive) to silver fox George (#ded). Presented by Matt Ward Entertainment, expect lols, tears and all the feels as you follow Billy’s journey from boxing to ballet where he discovers a passion for dance that changes his life forever. Elton John fans (aka everyone) you’re in for a treat as he composed the incredibly emotive musical score, and this alone is incentive enough for us to snap up some tix. Performances kick off on Saturday 1 July and conclude on Sunday 30 July and trust us, the show is on pointe!

Where: The Star Gold Coast, Casino Drive, Broadbeach

Game on Queensland!

Winter is upon us, which can only mean one thing – it’s time to bust out your lucky socks, begin the vocal warm ups and channel your inner Gus Gould in preparation to be shouting ‘Queenslanderrrrrr’ from the rooftops when we inevitably wipe the floor with our southern foes in blue – we mean, when State of Origin returns for another year.

One thing all footy fans can agree on (unlike some of the questionable refs calls) is the electric atmosphere is as integral to the Origin experience as the ice cold beers and ribbing of our mates that insist on sporting a blue jersey #whytho.

State of Origin at The Star (image supplied)

Dishing up good times as consistently as Thurston’s kicking game, The Star have done what they do best, curated a top notch night out that’s the closest you can get to the live experience on the GC #score. And we’re tipping, even if you’re not a die-hard footy fan (not us patiently waiting for the ‘go banana’ meme to do the rounds again this year), odds are you’ll find yourself converted after being a part of the action The Star has in store. But also no judgement if you’re all like #i’mjusthereforthesnacks bc we all know the food and drinks The Star dish up are #goals.

Hosting all three cockroaches vs cane toads nail-biters from two of their incredible venues, choose to watch the game under the stars on The Lawn at Garden Kitchen & Bar, or get the stadium experience in Sports Bar live, large & loud. As if the game day anticipation isn’t already excitement enough, kick off your night with MC’s to bring the hype, giveaways and footy inspired nosh specials.

For the hardcore fans, sidling up to the big screen amongst the buzz of the Sports Bar is the obvious choice. Add yourself a Qld Burger – Fried chicken burger, sriracha mayo, coleslaw, pineapple with XXXX to the mix and it’s officially a game-night part-ay.

Entry is free, but as you’d imagine seats can be harder to come by than a NSW series win. Our tip? Get the crew together and book yourself a boujee booth package. For $950 for up to 10 mates, guaranteed prime watching posse and the star treatment inc. a feast fit for a footy team – two pizzas and two All Star Platters. Oh and no doubt the $450 bar tab will also go down a treat (plus no arguing about whose round it is).

But leg it on over to The Star website #stat to book your Game 3 VIP treatment because booths for Game 1 & 2 have already sold out #yousnoozeyoustand.

For those who prefer the ambience of the open air venue, of course the fun continues over at The Lawn at the Garden Kitchen & Bar – and in it’s defence it is a pretty unbeatable spot. The burger and beer combo on offer is also a winner – Chargrilled Angus Beef Burger with a XXXX Gold Schooner with the option to upgrade to onion rings (which in our op-onion would be a crying shame to miss #isthatevenaquestion).

And yep, because The Star never do anything by halves, of course there’s the option to upgrade your night out at The Lawn too. Ensure you’ve landed the best seat in the house, er, in front of the big screen rather, by booking a Picnic Table for the main event. Nab yours for a $200 pre-payment, which then goes towards a non-refundable food or beverage credit for your table #winnerwinnerbeerandburgerdinner. And because picnic tables don’t grow on trees (thx Dad), bookings for the hottest seats in the house are strictly limited so lock yours in here.
