If your regular coffee order is starting to feel a little… flat, allow us to introduce Flipside, the Mermaid Beach newcomer that’s giving your daily caffeine hit a serious shake-up.
Flipside’s signature “cofftails” have already got the locals buzzing. Yes, cofftails. Think cocktails… without the booze, where bar techniques meet specialty coffee to create a completely new kind of morning perk.
Because why should happy hour have all the fun?
The creative mastermind behind Flipside is owner and designer Haas. Originally from Mongolia, his journey has been anything but ordinary (much like the cofftails he’s created). From studying construction management and business operations to running a nursery and developing a passion for architecture and design, every chapter of his career has shaped who he is today. Now, after more than a decade in Australia, Haas brings all those experiences together under one roof.
Rather than outsourcing the fit-out, Haas rolled up his sleeves and built much of it himself including the handcrafted bar, stools, planters and the lush garden out the back.
Haas said, “Every part of Flipside carries a piece of my own hands and stories. Every piece of furniture is a conversation between the building’s past and my own vision.”
Stepping inside, the warm lighting and natural textures quietly draw you in, with greenery at every turn and a calming palette of black, white and persimmon. Inspired by Melbourne’s boutique cafe scene and the timeless character of European bars, the venue strikes that sweet spot between refined and relaxed.
Let’s dive into the cofftails, shall we?
Solea Solea is a Latina-inspired mocha that starts sweet with dates before finishing with a surprising jalapeno kick.
Ironbark Cinder reimagines the long black, layered with rich, smoky flavours inspired by the Australian bush.
Prefer something light and refreshing? The Secluded Garden blends citrus, fresh mint and coconut water with a silky shot of espresso for an escape in a glass.
The food is every bit as inventive. Spice things up with the Middle Eastern-inspired Habibi Shakshuka, or satisfy your sweet tooth with the Fruit Bowl, topped with coconut cloud granola.
And then there are the crepes, a menu all of their own. Go sweet with the Mango Pom Pom, layered with housemade mango mascarpone cream, or savoury with the Smoked Salmon & Pesto.
But don’t get too comfortable, because things are about to flip.
The original vision for Flipside was always to transform from a relaxed beachside cafe by day into a vibrant cocktail bar by night, with the atmosphere changing as the sun goes down. While the daytime offering has already found its feet, evening service is set to launch soon, complete with an original cocktail menu that follows the same creative thinking behind its cofftails.
One visit, and you might just find yourself flipping your regular coffee order for good.
