Yoru the one that I want

Yoru fires up Korean-Japanese fusion in Nobby Beach.

You know you’re in for something special when a love story simmers for 15 years and ends up plated on the Gold Coast. Adam and Jessica Long are the culinary couple behind Yoru, Nobby Beach’s newest night-time darling serving up Korean-Japanese fusion with a whole lot of heart.

Their story starts in Sydney’s bustling restaurant scene, where fate (and food) brought them together. That shared passion for nosh turned into romance, and soon Adam found himself not only falling for Jessica, but for the flavours of her Korean heritage. What followed was a whirlwind of cooking, creating and cross-cultural flavour-chasing that would eventually lead them north, from Bondi to the Goldie, to build a dream restaurant from scratch.

Yoru, which translates to “night” in Japanese, stands out proud with a pink neon sign above the foodie strip of Nobby Beach (which, let’s face it, is quickly becoming the foodie crown of the Gold Coast). Jessica, the design brain behind the space, has blended the hustle of Tokyo’s Izakaya culture with the charm of Seoul’s side-street dining into Yoru.

The result is a space that feels both transportive and local, like your favourite laneway dive just got a glow-up. Think colourful roadside grills, open kitchen, bar seating, bar tables to people-watch and banquet tables made for long, laughter-filled dinners.

Adam runs the kitchen with his background spanning Sydney’s oyster bars, modern Italian joints and fine dining stalwarts, but it’s his global travels that really seasoned his skills. From Southeast Asia to Europe, and even into the heart of India where he helped cook for thousands in charity kitchens, Adam learned that food isn’t just about taste, it’s about bringing people together.

It’s that philosophy that infuses every dish at Yoru.

Sashimi glistens like sea glass, with a premium selection of fresh salmon, tuna, kingfish, and scallop, expertly sliced and served with a side of freshly grated daikon. It would be rude not to share.

Starters include Aburi Taco packed with a trio of salmon, kingfish, tuna and mayo, seared aburi-style in a crispy taco shell. And who can go past Korean Fried Chicken? Not us! Dress it up with your choice of honey soy garlic sauce, sweet-spicy gochujang, extra spicy-hot, or lightly seasoned with sea salt.

Noods are next-level delish, with bowls of chewy udon swimming in umami-rich broth that will warm you up quicker than a yakitori grill on full flame.

Speaking of flame-licked fare, the skewers are perfectly charred and juicy, like Charcoal Grilled Wagyu Beef & Garlic Sprout and the Yaki Corn Rib.

Dishes pair oh-so-lovely with Yoru’s curated wine list and cocktails. If you only order one drink, we recommend the Violet Geisha – a colour-changing Japanese whisky sour infused with Asian pear and butterfly pea flower, finished with a gold shimmer. Yoru so fancy.

A matcha made in heaven

The Oxley 1823 has just welcomed a new eatery and it’s coming in with a bang! Bobby Bang’s is the result of a decade-long culinary journey by owners Emmi Munday and Daud Kendall. From humble beginnings at Miami Marketta to the beloved Lucky Bao, the duo have created a contemporary Asian-style eatery that brings bold flavours and community vibes to Nobby’s.

It all began ten years ago at Miami Marketta, where Emmi and Daud first started sharing their passion for food. The vibrant, bustling atmosphere of the market was the perfect launchpad for their creative culinary ambitions.

Emmi, with over 30 years in the restaurant industry and a deep commitment to health and wellness, has always envisioned uniting her two loves. Emmi said, “My aim is to bring them together with a strong focus on community.”

Daud, a Singapore-born chef with more than 40 years of experience in prestigious kitchens worldwide, complements Emmi’s vision with his culinary expertise and dedication to flavours.

Eight years ago, the dream team opened Lucky Bao in Mermaid Waters, a vibrant eatery that quickly became a local favourite for its creative take on Asian street food. Now, they’re channelling that same passion and flair into their latest venture, Bobby Bang’s.

“I pour my passion for bold flavours into every dish we create,” Daud said. “Now, I’m excited to bring that same dedication to crafting amazing dishes for Bobby Bang’s.”

Building on the success of Lucky Bao, Bobby Bang’s brings a contemporary Asian twist to breakfast and lunch in the serene setting in The Oxley’s sunlit atrium alongside newbie eateries Buoy and Sunkist. Designed by Emmi and built by Dankav Developments, the space exudes warmth and community charm.

The menu is a testament to Daud’s dedication to flavours that pack a punch. Kickstart your day with breakfast ramen-egg noodles with crispy bacon, ramen egg, takana, truffle manchego. Or indulge in shokupan french toast topped with whipped cream, strawberries and hojicha caramel.

Standout sandos like the panko crumbed wagyu burger with takana, cabbage slaw and curry mayonnaise and slow cooked pork katsu with kewpie, bulldog sauce are already crowd favourites.

For a slurpalicious feast, Bobby’s bowls hit the table from 11:30am, offering irresistible combinations like local bay lobster paired with XO noodles, spring onion, chili, holy basil and crispy fried shallots.

Drinks are equally enticing and allow Emmi’s holistic expertise to shine. For a touch of zen, guests can enjoy hand-whisked ceremonial matcha and cacao, or order both with the double ceremony of ceremonial cacao, ceremonial matcha and iced milk.

For something a little stronger, there’s an array of Asian-inspired cocktails including a signature Bobby Bang with a zesty mix of yuzu, ginger, lemon and spiced rum. Japanese beers, handmade sodas and a curated list of organic wines are on the menu to suit every taste.

With its focus on bold flavours, beautiful design and a commitment to community, Bobby Bang’s is poised to become a staple of Nobby’s dining.

The gem that’ll stache its way into your heart!

Moustache, Nobby Beach (Image: © 2024 Inside Gold Coast)

The Oxley 1823 has gained some serious lip service this week, with another hot spot joining the lineup and making a stache-ing impression. Putting a whole new Euro twist on the café, restaurant, and bar game, it’s hotter than a handlebar mo in the 80s and is aptly called, Moustache. Here to turn your average breaky/brunch/dinner into something follicle-ly fabulous, it’s compact but what it lacks in size, it more than makes up for in charm. Think intimate, cozy, and effortlessly cool – just the way we like our noshing and watering holes.

The epic menu is inspired by the continent where food is practically a religion (#amen) offering small bites that pack a big punch. Then there’s the bevs and let’s start with the espresso which is strong enough to curl your ‘stache and in our humble opinion, is the perfect brew.

Moving on to the boozier stuff, Moustache has an expertly curated selection of cocktails that come with a healthy splash of European flair. And the vinos? Let’s just say they’ve been handpicked with the kind of finesse that only sommelier with a penchant for Euro panache could muster.

Now let’s talk about the space itself. This intimate little pocket rocket packs a stylish punch, combining comfy vibes with cool factor in equal measure. It’s the kind of place where you can sip, savour, and soak in the ambiance, all while feeling like you’ve stumbled upon a hidden gem because, well, you have (you’re welcome).

Moustache is all about keeping things down-to-earth, with a strong focus on community and making everyone feel welcome. No need to make a reservation – just stroll on in and the team will whisk you away to a cozy corner, whether that’s at a street-side table perf for people watching, perched on a bar stool, or tucked away in the vibey laneway.

The genius behind Moustache is none other than Brodie Green, the mastermind who brought us the neighbouring crowd fave, Buoy, and started Seadog (voted the best café on the GC, thank you very much). Brodie’s got a knack for creating spaces that feel like home (only way cooler) and with the official opening date right around the corner, you can betcha bottom dollar that it’s un-beard-lievably good.

In the kitchen, Head Chef Rodrigo Paraboa will wield his culinary wand, with a resume that reads like a foodie’s dream: Little Truffle, Paper Daisy, and The Paddock Restaurant at Beechmont Estate. And if you’re wondering what dish has him most excited, that would be Charcoal Grilled Prawns, paired with spreadable salami. It’s a combo which sounds kinda wild, but tastes oh-so-right. Chef’s orders – and we’re not about to argue because when Rodrigo speaks, we listen.

Say Hello To The Oxley

The Oxley, Nobby Beach (Image: © 2023 Inside Gold Coast)
The Oxley, Nobby Beach (Image: © 2023 Inside Gold Coast)

There’s a new kid on the block in Nobby’s and it’s quite literally all we’ve been hearing about. The doors to one of the most talked about new precincts – The Oxley 1823 – are open.

Nobby’s has long been a hive of activity for the Coast, whether you’re looking for somewhere to get your morning caffeine fix (aren’t we all) or a margarita (actually, make that 10) it’s one of the best beachside spots around.

Now Nobby’s is bringing back that charm you know and love but with all the good stuff you’ve been missing, like you know a grocer and butcher.

The Calile-esque look is a welcome addition to Nobby’s, it’s giving a resort vibe and we’re absolutely all about feeling like we’re on vacay while doing our weekly grocery shop.

Not only have the team at The Oxley brought us a gorg new hangout spot, they’re also bringing us the legends behind Rick Shores who have announced a whole new concept coming to the precinct mid 2024.

A side-step from the Asian-style menu at the iconic Rick Shores, the new restaurant concept is set to bring a Latin American flavour by their Executive Chef James Brady, who’s been wining and dining at some of the world’s top Mexican and Latin American restaurants all in the name of market research – sounds like a job for us!

The space will spread across two levels with the Latin American restaurant on level one, an open-air rooftop ceviche bar and private dining rooms so there’s literally everything you need for the ultimate long lunch all in one spot.

In stage one of the precinct’s opening, you’ll see some familiar faces, with the brains behind Burleigh institution Seadog bringing a new café to the block. Buoy (pronounced boo-ee) is promising to deliver a pared back menu that is less on frills and big on flavour, think a super considered menu with the classics you know and love as well as fresh feeds with hero quality produce.

But what about the coffee we hear you ask? Think boutique harvested coffee from Colombia poured by expert baristas with unique flavours of milo and caramel – yes, you read that right – because life’s too short for boring coffee.

Also coming back to Nobby’s, is the legendary Gourmet Meats under the guise of the Oxley Village Butcher so you can say hello to premium meats to level up your BBQ game with fresh cuts from the best farms around.

The Oxley Village Grocer is bringing all the fresh produce and groceries you need as well as market flowers for whether you’re looking for ‘just because’ blooms or something that says ‘sorry I didn’t mean to forget your birthday’ – eek.

Gelato at The Oxley, Nobby Beach (images by ABLO)

Last but not least, all that shopping and socialising is thirsty work so the Oxley 1823 Sub Station is your stop for hydration station with juices and milkshakes that will def bring the boys to the yard, or a cheeky scoop of gelato because we’re in for a long hot summer.

We’ve been eagerly awaiting this pretty little newcomer and I think it’s safe to say it’s been worth the wait, so you know where to catch us kicking back for a bite and a beverage this summer.
