Wonderbird swoops into Burleigh

Good cluck finding a better chicken joint.

Whilst we certainly live in the ‘lucky country’, it’s the tasty spoils of nature which can really set Australia apart from the rest of the world. And the all-new Wonderbird chicken shop convincingly combines these native ingredients with the simpilicity of perfectly cooked chicken.

If there’s one thing Burleigh doesn’t lack, it’s a long list of quality food options at your disposal. So, what can you expect from this newly opened slinger of chicken goodness? Well, first off, Wonderbird is looking to incorporate fresh and nutritious ingredients to give you finger-lickin’ fried chicken, with stacks of flavour, but without too much guilt involved. Part of their signature coating on all fried chicken is the addition of Australian endemic lemon myrtle and saltbush — and not an ounce of gluten in sight…. Say whatttttt?!

Yep, you’re going to be extremely hard pushed to find this flavour profile outside of Australia. Meaning exclusively flavoured and lovingly prepared free-range chicken will be what sets these guys apart from the competition.

The shop has only just opened its doors, and the simple but taste focussed menu will answer your takeaway dreams, be the perfect place to grab a quick bite whilst you’re out for the afternoon or about to hit up the town (and all the margaritas) on the weekend — hey, we don’t judge. We also have word that they will be dishing up bevvies soon – so really, there is no excuse not to drop in.

The space is bright, welcoming, and primely positioned right on the Gold Coast Highway, making it accessible if you want to grab and go or an excellent option for the post-beach dinner migration.

Staple chicken shop items are very much the order of the day here. Choose between multiple Fried Chicken Pieces — going right up to the 15-piece Tribe Bucket — all accompanied with pickles and your choice of house-recipe sauces like Mango & Basil or Watermelon & Habanero Chilli.

The Classic Bird and Spicy Bird burgers let you choose grilled, fried or plant-based chicken and will satisfy those who like their bird between bread. However we highly recommend The Wonderbird with fresh cabbage and carrot slaw, pickle, red onion, bacon jam, cheese, chicken and aioli, YUUUMMMM!

A small collection of Freshly Made Salads including a delicious Fresh Vegetable & Ancient Grain Slaw are also available — again, the decision is yours on how you want your added chicken cooked.

Additionally, you can combo food items up with hot chips and soft drinks/water/coconuts water, and the little tackers are taken care of with their own Wonderkids section of the menu because, let’s be honest, chicken and chips for the little ones are always a win.

The venue will be looking to get themselves accustomed to the bustling Burleigh locale before looking into making their food available for delivery apps and specials. However, watch this space because they will be in the pipeline for the future.

Make no mistake, Burleigh Heads is officially brimming with a kaleidoscope of delicious bites for every taste and budget; we reckon Wonderbird’s better chicken is going to be right at home!

When: Sunday-Thursday 11am — 8.30pm, Friday & Saturday 11am — 10pm

Southport’s new 2 Bros serving up juicy fried chicken

2 Bros interior (image supplied)

They say there is nothing fried chicken cannot make better and we are certainly inclined to agree. Who are they you ask? Southport’s newest eatery 2 Bros of course.

Having opened late last month, the fried chicken connoisseurs have already gained a loyal following of chicken lovers and it’s not hard to see why, they are indeed serving up some of the best fried chicken around.

Found on the corner of Ferry Road and Meron Street, 2 Bros is a brightly coloured space all yellows and blues with a big old sign adorning one wall that reads “We don’t CLUCK around” and we can confirm, that is correct.

Menu items, 2 Bros (image supplied)

When it comes to all things fried chicken, these guys know what’s up.

The menu is absolutely packed with lip-smacking eats from burgers to wings and whole chickens should you be the hungriest person on the Coast and let’s dive into the menu because we know you’re dying to find out.

To start with, there are wings and you may choose to snack on 5, 9 or 13 of them. They range from original to scorching hot so choose your own adventure there.

There’s a bigger bites section with Big Wings, a Half Bird, the Whole Damn Bird, Hot Chicken & Waffles (YUM), the Bros Bucket and the Bros Box and it’s all chickeny goodness so you can’t go wrong.

Chicken Burger, 2 Bros (image supplied)

When it comes to burgers there’s plenty of choices; The Original for example comes with crispy friend, chicken, lettuce, American cheese, B&B pickles and 2 Bros special sauce and The Boss comes with all of that plus Nashville Spiced Sauce and Ranch Dressing.

You can also opt for a Cowboy with Angus Beef, the Big Bro Wrap or the 2 Bros Vegan Burger. So many to try.

To sip, we are very happy to announce that there are the most delicious shakes in flavours like Birthday Cake, Oreo Cookie Mint, Salted Caramel and Nutella. Send help.

TGI Fridays, Surfers Paradise (image supplied)
TGI Fridays, Surfers Paradise (image supplied)

We’ve never met a burger we didn’t like. Okay, maybe that’s a bit dramatic, but we’ve never met a burger from this list that we didn’t love. The humble burger has reached new heights thanks to these Gold Coast hospo legends putting new twists of the classic favourite. And what’s not to love? They’re reliable, damn tasty and the ultimate all-rounder.

Think you’re not a burger lover? Well, we challenge you not to be after eating your way through this epicness. Already converted? Thank us later because your tastebuds will never be the same after these bad boys. To us, every day is burger day – so we’ve pulled together a list of the 13 best burger joints for you to eat your way through. So cheers to the GOAT dish and one of our favourite menu items and prepare to loosen those belts people!

Paloma Wine Bar
It’s one of Burleigh’s favourite local haunts for their huge wine range, next-level cocktails and steak frites, but have you tried the Paloma Cheeseburger? The burger itself is pretty large and in charge for a humble cheeseburger, plus it’s paired with their signature fries – name a more iconic duo. They’re available exclusively on Wednesdays to help you wine-down on hump day and for $14, you’d be losing money not treating yourself #girlmath.
Where: 1/12 James St, Burleigh Heads

Two Yolks
Burgers and Burleigh apparently go hand in hand! Two Yolks are home to potentially one of the broadest burger ranges, you can literally treat yourself to a toasty bun for breakfast, lunch or dinner. The Triple B is a solid (literally) starter to your day with Bangalow free range bacon, pork sausage plus a heap more with… wait for it… tater tots as a sneaky side. Feeling like something a little more classic? Well the options are (almost) endless with spicy fried chicken all the way through to a Mexican moment.
Where: 13 Connor St, Burleigh Heads

Betty’s Burgers
We don’t make this claim lightly, but there is quite literally a burger for everyone here. Vegan? No problem. Don’t make friends with gluten? Say less. These guys clearly take their burgers seriously because Betty’s have a huge 15 different burgers to choose from, your biggest problem will be narrowing it down to just one. The best problem to have if we do say so ourselves. Need some inspo? We can’t go past the Betty’s Deluxe or Shroom Burger. Perfect for refuelling post retail therapy.

Burgster
With a name like Burgster, it’s only natural they deliver the goods in the burger department. It’s absolutely one of the best burger joints on the Gold Coast so it’s well worth returning to eat your way through each and every options. Now, while you might’ve come for the burgers you seriously need to stay for the tempura oyster, brie bites and margs. A match made in burger heaven.

Wahlburgers
Our favourite movie star Mark Wahlburg and his brothers certainly know what’s up when it comes down to a burger of great proportions. Wahlburgers first Queensland store located at the beach end of the newly renovated Paradise Centre always deliver on big burgers with big flavour. Rock up with the crew after some time on the beach and tuck into a BBQ Bacon Burger (which is brother Donnie’s choice) with a beef patty, tasty cheese, bacon, fresh jalapenos, BBQ sauce and avo spread – the perfect combo with all of your favourites on one delicious burger.  Pro tip: level it up with the famous Fried Pickles to start with and thank us later.

Next, seize a menu and struggle to decide which of the next-level burgers you’re set on. Ideal if you find yourself needing a refreshment between happenings at Cooly Rocks On. In the realm of burgers, these guys bring out revolving weekly specials with all the best music genre names you can think of. Delicious and always a good time. We strongly suggest you swing by Eddie’s and let your hair down!

Luckie’s Diner – The Collective
It’s always cheat day at Luckie’s Diner, one of The Collective’s fave eats offerings! Their American-style menu with an edge never disappoints and their Royale with Cheese Burger featuring beef, cheese, special sauce, lettuce, tomato and pickles served with fries and ketchup will have you coming back for more. We love that there’s an Aussie Aussie Aussie Burger with grilled pineapple, beetroot and egg, because we don’t see this on menus enough these days. Also an honourable mention to the Pork Belly Nuggets served with maple dipping sauce too, a real winner at this local’s haunt.

You’ll cross the road for Freddy’s Chicken Shop

As complex as life can be, sometimes it’s the simplest things we end up enjoying the most. Often great food around good company goes hand in hand, right? Taking this ethos and running with it to an all-time high is Burleigh’s newest and most likely tastiest new addition — Freddy’s Chicken Shop.

Wandering the chic streets of Burleigh on any given day, as you scope out the boutique shops, meet friends for coffee, or seek some shade after an epic session at the beach often means you’ll be looking for something tasty to eat. And this is precisely what the owners here had in mind when they first thought up the concept.

Bringing Freddy’s to life are the owners of the Burleigh Pavilion, and they know all too well how this much-loved suburb is famed for its casual just off the beach vibe and playful lifestyle. Last year when things got a little strange in our lives, you may remember the introduction of the cutest looking vintage caravan out the front of the Pavilion selling coffee, breads, and baked treats. This is where the seed was sown. It didn’t take the lads long to connect the dots and realise Burleigh was missing an epic no-nonsense chicken shop with great quality fast food — that at the same time isn’t hugely unhealthy. After all, this may sound like a revelation, but fast food doesn’t need to cost you your health!

Taking up a prominent space on the corner of James and Connor streets, this breezy and whitewashed space is your new favourite lunchtime hangout. With copious amounts of window seating available, the wrap-around counter houses an array of freshly made salads and hot treats which you can easily choose your size of helping — ideal for taking back to the office or a sneaky accompaniment to an evening meal at home.

The mainstay of the menu is — you guessed it — chicken. But not just any chook will do. Freddy’s is big on ensuring their food is memorable for all the right reasons with chicken sourced from a free-range producer in the Noosa Hinterland. Believe us, great quality chickens like these cook easier, requires less seasoning, and to top it off, are utterly delicious.

Besides a collection of drool-worthy burgers such as The Freddy’s, which consists of grilled chicken breast, a selection of salads, aioli, and their very own comeback sauce, you’ll have the choice of handmade rolls and the option of grabbing yourself quarter and half chickens with a serving of their own chips. Gravy and chicken salt are naturally offered for your pleasure! — Winner Winner, Chicken Dinner!

In the drinks section, Freddy’s is whipping up a small list of made-on-the-spot milkshakes, stocking a great selection of soft drinks, and we are told in time will be serving alcohol — patience now!

Since opening, the shop has been a roaring success. With the venue excited to see people have caught on to the essence of grabbing their food at Freddy’s and then taking it away to a beautiful outside space to enjoy — because whether it’s the beach, a park, or creek, let’s face it, we have a few to choose from around Burleigh Heads.

Hours: Every day 11am — late
