Flotsam Festival

The countdown is on: Flotsam Festival 2025 hits the Gold Coast from May 1–14!

Now in its fourth year, this two-week celebration of surf, film, and photography transforms the coastline into an immersive arts trail from Coolangatta to Burleigh Heads – showcasing the region’s iconic surf culture through powerful storytelling, stunning imagery, and creative experiences for all ages.

Staged across indoor and outdoor venues, Flotsam pays tribute to the coast’s world-class surf breaks through short film premieres, exhibitions, live music, creative workshops, in-depth filmmaker talks, and more. Expect a packed lineup of free and low-cost events, rolling up the coast like an autumn swell, bringing surfers, artists, ocean lovers and curious creatives together.

Opening weekend kicks off May 1 with a massive Block Party in Coolangatta, featuring surf flicks, DJ sets, live music, exhibitions and projections — plus the return of crowd favourites like Media + Makers, a free night of live podcasts and storytelling at the Coolangatta Sands Hotel. Late-night highlight Rattlesnake’s Lightwaves will screen Rage5 and Horse, two bold new works by underground surf filmmakers.

New this year, the Kirra Immerse Hub (May 2–4) at Roughton Park brings surf cinema under the stars, hands-on workshops, art installations, live music, and environmental action – including a 25th anniversary screening of Glass Love by Andrew Kidman.

Returning festival highlights include:

  • (Surf) Girls on Film: a showcase of female creators
  • Homegrown: the local film and photography awards night
  • International Surf Flick Fest: a global surf cinema celebration
  • Next Wave: youth-led film and photo program paired with live music

“Flotsam will again welcome some of the world’s foremost photographic talent while shining a light on our homegrown creatives,” said Festival Director Carolyn Emge. “This is about experiencing the Gold Coast’s surf culture through a creative lens — from pop-up film and music to conservation-driven art and accessible workshops.”

The spirit of Flotsam is stronger than ever. Born as a grassroots recovery initiative, the festival has grown into one of the world’s most immersive celebrations of surf art and ocean-inspired storytelling.
