Top 10 Tastiest Ice Cream Shops

So, gelato is the Italian version of ice cream, but what’s actually the difference between the two? With a lesser fat content and a slower churn pace you could argue that gelato is the healthier version (we like the sound of that). Either way, we love any kind of ice cream, gelato, sorbet and frozen yogurt, which is why we scooped our way through the Coast’s best ice cream spots to bring to you our top 10 (from North to South).

1.       Royal Copenhagen, Surfers Paradise

At Royal Copenhagen they make their own waffle cones freshly in house daily using a Danish cone cooker (hence the name). Customers can add their choice of free toppings on their ice creams by using the free self-serve toppings bar – brain freeze alert!

2.       Zanette’s Gelati, Surfers Paradise

A Surfers Paradise locals favourite is Zanette’s Gelati. Owner Frank  guarantee’s the freshness and quality of their products by making their gelato and sorbet on-site daily, using quality ingredients from both Italy and Australia.
For all the health freaks out there, they’ve developed a range of healthier gelato recipes which are very low in fat compared to other ice-cream, without any artificial colours or preservatives and using only pure fruit (some of them are even gluten free)!

3.       Cold Rock, various locations

For over 20 years Cold Rock has been the Australians go-to ice cream shop. Choose it, mix it, smash it, love it, at Cold Rock, your way is the best way! We couldn’t agree more, and with five Gold Coast locations there’s sure to be one near you. Just in time for school holidays they brought back the Premium Selection Mix including Ferrero Rocher, Raffaelo and Lindt chocolate.

4.       Ben & Jerry’s, various locations

Ben and Jerry have to be the coolest dudes alive ’cause they brought us Ben & Jerry’s (we’re forever grateful). Flavour combos like Half Baked, Cherry Garcia and The Tonight Dough have us drooling. If you’re after the whole B&J experience forget 7 Eleven and head to one of their scoop shops, add one of their chocolaty cones and you’re all set.

5.       Lello Lello, Broadbeach

This brand new Pacific Fair ice cream shop offers the finest quality Italian delicacies and a diverse range of 30+ gelato flavours to please any sweet tooth. Only the freshest and tastiest ingredients make the cut. But Lello Lello’s doesn’t stop at gelato, they offer a wider range of products including assorted gelati desserts and cakes, gelati shakes, refreshing granita and much more.

6.       The Gelato Shop, Broadbeach

This award winning gelato shop has been making kids (and adults, of course) smile for over 13 years. They offer over 90 amazing flavours, ranging from creamy dairy based gelatos (Snickers is an Inside Gold Coast favourite) to intense water based sorbets. Open seven days til late, The Gelato Shop should be on your radar for when the munchies kick in.

7.       Scoop Gelati, Burleigh

Scoop Gelati is a family run business located in James Street. They offer authentic Italian, freshly made gelato and sorbets. Taste your way through the delicious flavour combos until you’ve found your fave, this is not an easy task. The best thing about Scoop Gelati has to be their hot waffles, delicious!

8.       Gelateria Dolce Follia, Burleigh

When you see the colourful display of smooth, silky gelato you won’t be able to resist. Gelateria Dolce Follia has been producing award winning gelato for years, all made freshly in-house daily. You can even buy 500ml or 1L tubs to take home but it’s cash only, so come prepared!

9.       My Gelato, various locations

Owner Davide graduated from Gelato University in Italy and knows a thing or two about making mouth watering gelato. The daily changing menu includes flavour combos like chocolate brownie, wild berry and ginger kiss. They also just opened a second store in Broadbeach so the northern end of the Gold Coast doesn’t have to miss out.

10.   Messina Gelato, Coolangatta

An ice-cream list wouldn’t be complete without Messina Gelato on it. This all-time favourite started off in Sydney and have now opened stores all over Australia.

Absolutely everything is made lovingly in-house by the little team of mad professors, using only ingredients in their raw and most natural form. Colourings, flavourings, preservatives and pastes have no place at Messina. Their sorbets are completely fat free, dairy free and full of fruit.
