The Spirit of Churaki

An incredible FREE musical theatre production in Surfers Paradise.

It’s heralded as one of the most incredible theatre productions the Gold Coast has ever seen and this Thursday The Spirit of Churaki is ours for the watching at the Main Stage in Surfers Paradise.

The production is a highlight of Festival 2018 and those in the know have been singing its praises since the dawn of the program (which seems like 147 years ago, quite frankly).

The story goes a little something like this: Churaki, a Goodjingburra man, performed the first documented act of lifesaving on the Gold Coast in 1911. The performance chronicles the tale of one of many daring rescues he carried out in the early 1900’s as the surf bathing craze took hold.

It’s an incredibly heroic, mostly unknown story honouring a rich lineage of saltwater people, a spirit of generosity and the deep connection to country and cultural obligation.

But not only is the story a stunning one, the production boasts a sweet lineup of some absolutely legendary Australian musicians under the direction of Brian Ritchie (of Violent Femmes fame).

In keeping with the Gold Coast’s deep love of the ocean, The Spirit of Churaki is a musical collaboration united by the spirit of the surf.

While of course being mesmerised by the story of Churaki, you’ll also witness traditional Aboriginal ceremony, the ancient sounds of Aboriginal language, compelling music theatre and a closing set by surf rock legends The Break.

Even more excitingly, Gold Coast local Tim Baker, bestselling author and longtime editor of Surfing Life and Tracks magazines, wrote The Spirit of Churaki.

If you’ve been overwhelmed by choice throughout Festival 2018 we get it, there’s lots going on but if we can give you one piece of advice it is DON’T MISS THIS ONE!

The Spirit of Churaki might well be a once in a lifetime experience and a chance to learn a little more about the history of our beautiful city.

Catch you there.
