Chameleon Lounge Bar is for everyone!

When it comes to diversity on the Coast, we are all for it. Times they are a-changin’ they say — or was that Bob Dylan?…anyway, it’s great to see our fair city adapt and move with the times. One part of that movement is undoubtedly the acknowledgement and openness to the LGBTQIA+ community. For some time, there hasn’t been an officially recognised LGBTQIA+ venue on the Gold Coast — till now. And we have to say, we’re proud to announce the arrival of Broadbeach’s Chameleon Lounge Bar and Restaurant.

Overall, the venue welcomes everyone – the way they are. Which is true to the Chameleon name.

Broadbeach’s Surf Parade is already a hive of drinks, entertainment, great food, and all up a generally good time. Appropriate then that Chameleon finds itself pride of place here after taking over the old site of what used to be Molly Malones.

The venue has an easy-going outside porch area that catches afternoon light, but once inside, you’ll be met with an array of seating options depending on how you want to mingle. High tables, ample cushioned backless seating, armchairs, booths: the choice is yours. Amongst the vibrant colouring, you’ll spot green flowering feature walls and in a little secluded area by the bar, a pool table for when you feel like getting competitive.

The lineup of acts, music, and daily specials is particularly mind-blowing. There are a plethora of things going on and so many daily specials we cannot possibly mention them all here! For example, you might want to get over your Monday blues by experiencing Monday Madness Minute To Win It games with food and drink specials or perhaps their Drag Queen Trivia on Tuesday’s. Perhaps you deserve a hump day treat, so their $1 wings and live music should do the trick. And when Friday rolls around, come and enjoy their open mic Drag Queen performances and live DJ set. The pinnacle of the offering is their weekly Saturday night production shows showing at 9pm, 10pm, and 11pm featuring a wealth of Gold Coast Drag Queen talent!

Apart from enough entertainment and drinks specials to lure you in, the venue also operates as a fully-fledged restaurant and has all of the tasty bites and eats such as nachos, spring rolls, sliders and for the more refined tastebuds, even antipasti boards and oysters. Swing by on the weekend and enjoy an afternoon of grazing their menu whilst sipping several of the Chameleon signature cocktails or the classic strawberry daiquiris, frozen margaritas and pina coladas to keep you cool this summer.

Ohh and sneaky tip, (if you keep your eyes peeled), you’ll see the colour of the lighting in the venue change. Why is that worth noting you may ask? Well, it represents the colour of certain cocktails and therefore tells you they are now at a reduced price: make sure you get to the bar before they change!

Fun, down to earth and welcoming of those who want to socialise without any barriers, Chameleon Lounge Bar brings a dash of diversity to the Gold Coast scene.

Broadbeach has long been regarded as one of our wining, dining and shopping. With a number of ‘stayers’ boasting staunch followers for many moons, sprinkled with a hearty helping of shiny new eats and drinks players, nothing can dull the sparkle of this burb’s A-grade entertainer status.

Here are precisely 17 reasons why locals – and Gold Coasters far and wide – love themselves a piece of our much-loved Broady.

Social Eating House + Bar
If you’re a foodie, this is your go-to. A modern Australian sensation, Social has more hats than a Milliner’s workshop. With Executive Chef Matthew Jefferson in charge, you’ll experience a carefully curated range of bar snacks, charcuterie, and small and large share plates, all featuring the finest Australian ingredients and paired to perfection. A meal here is worth.every.cent.

The Star Gold Coast
If ever there was a reason to get a babysitter, it’s for a session at The Star. Between the live music and amazing food at the Garden Kitchen & Bar, award-winning Cantonese, Japanese and modern Australian cuisine at Uncle Su, Kiyomi, and Nineteen at The Star, authentic Italian eats at Cucina Vivo, the ultimate buffet experience at Harvest Buffet, a few bevvies at the new-look Atrium Bar and/or the Insta-fave rooftop lounge bar at Nineteen, who needs to go anywhere else?
Where: 1 Casino Drive, Broadbeach

Broadbeach Bowls Club
Nothing says a chilled GC arvo like a game of barefoot bowls with a brew in hand. Another enduring favourite amongst the local set here on the GC, Broadbeach Bowls Club never fails to deliver a feel-good time for young and old. They serve up big portions of all your go-to pub-grub meals and do a great canape package for a laid-back birthday or celebration.

Dracula’s Cabaret Restaurant
If you’re after a tried and tested, long-standing comedic cabaret, good ‘ole Dracs has been serving up frights, food and frivolity since we were all ankle-biters. Most people are sold when they hear there’s a ghost train alone, let alone the actual show (which changes every so often, so there’s always a reason to go back), banquet dinner…and shots in syringes!
Where: Hooker Boulevard, Broadbeach

Aloha Bar and Dining
This tropical hidden treasure is all fun vibes, good food and cracking good times. Popular for its hospo nights, taco Thursdays, karaoke nights, live music and pumping DJs, there’s always something going on here. The tapas always deliver the feels (bao buns…I die!!), the Cucumber and Jalapeno Margi is (too) easy to drink, and we never tire of the super cute fit-out.

Sofia’s Restaurant & Bar
With an impressive contemporary Coastal European menu, we are completely besotted with Sofia’s…and we’re not alone. A meal here is all about enjoying and sharing simple, delicious food with your favourite people – as it should be, and truly encapsulates the famous words ‘That’s Amore’. Also, you heard it here first but Sofia’s is on the move. Watch this space!

Elk Espresso
Have you ever seen this place anything but bulging at the seams? Aaaand of course you haven’t. Since its pre-migration days just up the road, it’s had an army of raving fans and yes, this obvs includes us. A hop, skip and a jump from the beach, the coffee is all-time, the seasonal menus are heavenly, and they even do a Boozy Bottomless Brunch. And sold.

Blues on Broadbeach
So unlike our other listings, it may not be here 24/7 but it’s that much of a Broady icon that it would be criminal not to throw it a mention. As the name suggests, it brings us world-class blues and jazz music from locals and famous acts alike, performing across multiple venues over four unforgettable days. And it’s free, and sorry but when does that ever happen?

CHA CHA Japanese Restaurant
Gold Coasters have been CHA CHA bound for an authentic Japanese nosh-up which won’t break the bank for years, and that’s not about to change any time soon. The banquet menu is divine and every visit you’ll experience the same level of scrumptiousness. But the soy on the dim sum…it’s BYO and it’s hard to find an already affordable yet high-quality restaurant offering our 3 favourite letters. Score.

Not only some unique fashion boutiques live here, but the sheer number of amazing eateries is tres impressive. Soho House Bar
Just look for the London-esk red phone box and you know good times await. An intimate, hidden gem-adorned in graffiti and jam-packed with peeps sipping and bopping along to the sweet sounds of live DJ’s, this joint is seriously cool. The cocktail list is l.i.t, the crew are super engaging, and they’ve even been known to host things like a Wild Flower Gin Masterclass. What’s not to love?

Everybody knows the best part of the working day is counting down the minutes and then snappily leaving to have after-work drinks with your friends. Ok, so this might be an exaggeration. But it has to be said; this at least happens once a week — if not more — for most people!

In honour of washing the day away with a drink, and because we live in possibly the sunniest place on earth (making it perfect for after-work drinking and drinking in general), here’s a comprehensive list of spots to frequent post 5pm.

The Island Rooftop
Another after-work tipple, another rooftop. What more could you want. The Island Rooftop is all about enjoying the good things in life; eating, drinking and having good times with friends. The fit-out is reminiscent of a laidback beach house, and it’s nearly always packed with revellers. There are eats, balmy breezes and a little bit of late-night dancing thrown in for good measure.

Mr PP’s Deli & Rooftop Bar
Rooftop drinking is the best kind of drinking, especially with views overlooking the cityscape. Combine this with cheese platters, parmesan fries and deli meats and it’s pretty much the definition of a perfect after-work time. If you haven’t visited, expect exceptional cocktails, a solid wine and beer list, and also traditional pizzas. How good?!
Where: 43 Nerang Street, Southport

The Loose Moose
The lively, North American style bar is always a good time, after-work or otherwise. It’s low-lit and constantly filled with people having a great time. Fill up on epic burgers, loaded fries and the like while knocking back a vast array of beers and innovative cocktails that’ll tickle your after-work drinking fancy. The fun never ends at this Broadbeach fave.
Where: Oasis Shopping Centre, Surf Parade, Broadbeach

Surfers Pavilion
It doesn’t matter if you intend to stroll in here straight off your jet ski or after a long day in the office; the light-filled and airy Surfers Pavilion will make you most welcome either way. Recently launching ‘The Office Knock Off Drinks’ from 3pm on Friday’s, a cleverly crafted cocktail menu includes The Big Boss, something strong for the ‘World’s Best Boss’! with Woodford Reserve, lemon juice, a dash of maple syrup finished with a shiraz float or The Boss’ Pet for that person that does everything possible to impress the power above with Tequila, Aperol, lime and pineapple juice shaken and poured over ice.

Justin Lane Rooftop
Burleigh’s much-loved rooftop is Justin Lane, where pizza, pasta and frivolity are the name of the game. Of course, an afternoon sip or two is always a good idea, looking out over the ocean and with the shrill call of Rainbow Lorikeets in your ears. It’s beautifully Burleigh and an absolute must-visit for after-works sips.
Where: 1708-1710 Gold Coast Highway, Burleigh Heads

SPEC
With a beer garden to end all beer gardens, this Miami hotbed of great local tap beers and finger-licking eats cries out for afternoons lost in conversation. Arrange your fellow colleagues/friends and muster yourselves over tacos and the freshest of ales and let the failing light out over the hinterland be a distraction as you contemplate tomorrow’s monthly performance meeting.
Where: 2176 Gold Coast Highway, Miami

Garden Kitchen Bar
Choose your adventure at The Star Gold Coast’s most after-work friendly bar. Hang out inside amongst the greenery or pull up some space outside in the actual garden under the stars. It’s the perfect place to kick back and relax after-work, nibble on some tasty eats and enjoy the vibrant casino atmosphere.
Where: Casino Drive, Broadbeach Island

Granddad Jacks (Image: © 2020 Inside Gold Coast)
Granddad Jack's (Image: © 2020 Inside Gold Coast)

Granddad Jacks
This beloved gin and whisky distillery is quite obviously the perfect after-work drinks spot, with its abundant good vibes, epic cocktails, and live music on weekends. The team are a cool bunch of cats too. Head in there if you’re into making friends with absolute legends, sharing a yarn or two and sipping on some of the very best tipples on the Gold Coast.
Where: 45 Lemana Lane, Miami

Burleigh Brewing Co.
One of the Coast’s favourite breweries, Burleigh Brewing Co., offers a sizeable outdoor seating area, entertainment and a line-up of beers to suit every taste. They host regular events, and you’re sure to find a few new like-minded pals to hang out with. Grab as many people as possible, pull up a big table and fill it with empty schooner glasses for a guaranteed good time.
Where: 2 Ern Harley Drive, Burleigh Heads

Burleigh Pavilion
Obviously, oceanside drinks watching the sun go down is one of the most delightful things you can do after-work (and in general), and Burleigh Pavilion is the place to do it. On the Beach Bar side, pull up a high table and sip casual cocktails while sampling spur-of-the-moment eats or head over to The Tropic for a sit-down feast paired with more cocktails and a Prosecco or two. Perfecto.
Where: Goodwin Terrace, Burleigh Heads

Moxy’s Rooftop
We’re confident the sun shines that little bit brighter on the southern end, and there’s no better place to take advantage of that fact than at this Coolangatta gem. Let ocean breezes waft away any workday stresses and have yourself a knockoff or two.
Where: 2/152 Griffith Street, Coolangatta

HOTA — Fridays on the lawn
When we have world-class, year-round weather — and an arts precinct to match — it would be a shame not to put the two together over a well-earned drink. And that’s exactly what the premise of Fridays on the Lawn is all about. Head down any Friday between 4-7pm and bask in the fading afternoon sun beside their Lawn Bar whilst local live acts help you welcome in the weekend. If you find yourself enjoying the occasion and leaving doesn’t seem like a fitting thing to do, then head on up to the exciting Exhibitionist Bar at the very top level of the newly opened Gallery building. Amazing cocktails and sublime cityscape views aplenty: the epitome of sophisticated kick-ons if ever we saw them!

7 fierce places that put Drag Queens centrestage

Flamboyance at The Pink Flamingo

Getting out and about for a few drinks with friends can at times be a bit same-ol’ same-ol’. And we don’t mean this in a negative way. But sometimes nights out can seem like reruns of our favourite shows — sure, they’re fun, but you know the plotline. Somebody will drink too much, somebody will kiss a stranger, and naturally, there will be one too many espresso martinis.

So how does one shake up the status quo a little? Drag Queens, of course!

And if you weren’t aware, a number of Gold Coast venues regularly host the most magnificent and fun-loving drag queens to mix up and add some jazz to any outing. Not just one for the ladies either; it’s been noted guys have just as much fun when it comes to the ensuing high kicks and frivolities. Have a read and find out where on the Gold Coast you can enjoy a night out with Drag Queens.

Miami Marketta
For the last nine years, this multi-faceted venue has been entertaining, feeding and bringing together locals in a way no other business has, and for this, it deserves a round of applause. When they’re not showcasing renowned national, and international music acts, you’ll find their doors open three nights a week with a massive variety of the Coast’s best street food as well as art and fashion. You’ll also come across their habitual sold-out ticketed Drag Bingo and one-off Drag Comedy evenings, which are not to be missed!
Where: 23 Hillcrest Parade, Miami

The Island Gold Coast Brunch with Bite

The Island
This iconic hotel has one of the Gold Coast’s largest open-air rooftops and is the place to be when the sun is shining, and you feel the need to quench that hard-earned thirst with some beautifully put together cocktails. Keep up to date with what’s on as they regularly host drag events with a difference, like their laugh-a-minute Brunch with Bite and fun-loving Hey Felicia Drag and Dine Musical. Did we mention there are drinks packages? — Yassss!
Where: 3128 Surfers Paradise Boulevard, Surfers Paradise

The Avenue
What is there not to like about this Surfers Paradise behemoth: they simply have it all. Regardless of what day of the week it is or what time even, The Avenue makes itself one of the best places to either come and relax or live it up — all underpinned by slurp-worthy drinks and the yummiest of food. More often than not, themed party nights are going down, with Thursday being the night for risqué jokes aplenty with Dragalicious.

The Pink Flamingo
The Gold Coast’s premier cabaret performance and event venue, the list of hot-under-the-collar shows and eye-catching ladies/lads here is as long as your arm — and then some! You have some serious options when it comes to being entertained; however, if you feel the need for some flamboyant and over the top drag queen amusement, look no further than the Sunday stage show: Flamboyance. A sophisticated fusion of drag quuen cabaret and burlesque with an after-party that will keep you long into the night.
Where: Corner of 88 Surf Parade &, Victoria Avenue, Broadbeach

The Park Coomera
When it comes to finding family-friendly entertainment, great valued food and an overall great atmosphere, you’re hard pushed to look past The Park at Coomera. Yet when it comes to what’s on for big kids, there are plenty of options throughout the week to get you out the house — and away from the actual kids if need be. Take your pick between routine karaoke and unlimited bowling nights, but the star attraction has to be their monthly Drag Queen Bingo — the best way to laugh off a traumatic Monday at the office!

Ms St. James will take you through five rounds of number calling with two outrageous performances thrown in there along the way. If this doesn’t get you out of the house on a weekday night, nothing will!

Fat Freddy’s
Break the norm and spoil yourself with the most lavish and calorific Americana feast on the Gold Coast at Fat Freddy’s in Broadbeach.
