Pop’s Milk Bar swirls into Southport.
Pop’s Milk Bar swirls into Southport.
Something sweet, sugary and very smiley has come to town bringing with it the very best thickshakes you’ve ever sipped, burgers, jaffles and housemade, Italian-inspired gelato. You guessed it, it’s a 50s-esque Milk Bar and it’s all the nostalgic goodness you probably didn’t know you were missing in your life.
Pop’s Milk Bar can be found in Southport Park Shopping Centre bringing a good time vibe and an array of tasty treats. The newbie is the work of Jem Jacinto who is also the guy behind Burleigh Heads favourites Finn Poke and Two Yolks. He has spent the past 15 years in the hospitality industry and can certainly recognise a gap in the market when he sees one.
Jem created Pop’s Milk Bar because there isn’t a single thing like it on the Gold Coast and because Milk Bars were once a staple of the Australian foodie scene and he wanted to bring back everything they represent. Which as it turns out is bright colours, service with a smile and good food, all made from scratch.
Glossy white tiles and bright pops of colour are the name of the game inside. Paneled walls, old school, glass sundae jars lining the walls and a vintage video game add the perfect touches of nostalgia but with a modern spin.
It all works perfectly with the menu, which is a dream come true if you’re into sweet treats that’ll knock your socks off and tasty food that is also VERY good value.
Let’s start with the Gelato Thickshakes. They are made with the aforementioned housemade gelato and they are exceptional. Choose from flavours like Salted Caramel, Biscoff, Nutella and Peanut Butter and prepare to have your mind blown. There are SPIDERS made with Fanta, Root Beer or Coca Cola and how’s that for a blast from the past. Sip Coke from a glass bottle, coffee, housemade lemonade or tea if that tickles your fancy but also get a thickshake, trust us.
The food is equally as swoon-worthy with both breaky and lunch options that are as good as any comfort food gets. Bacon and Eggs, Ham and Cheese Croissants, and Pop’s Bacon and Egg Roll are all on the menu, and then there’s lunch.
Jaffles are obviously always a fun choice to take you back to your youth and you can choose from 4 cheese, Spaghetti O (love you) and Cheesey Baked Beans to name a few. There are burgers of course; Pop’s Cheeseburger is a winner, there’s a BBQ Bacon Cheeseburger, one with The Lot, Schnitty burgers like the OG, the Oi Parmi and the Spicy Nashville to name a few. Throw some crinkle cut chippies or potato gems on the side and you’ll be the happiest clam in Southport.
For dessert it’s housemade, Italian-style gelato with mix-ins on top, Creme Brulee Waffles perhaps, a Rocky Road Sundae, Pop’s Brulee Banana Split or perhaps a Gelato Sandwich. Or one of everything, we won’t judge.
It’s all honest food, made beautifully with the intention of spreading happiness and that’s exactly what Jem and the team have done here. Set one foot inside and your heart will melt long before your gelato does.
