Matt Coleman

Gold Coast Filmmaker and Videographer.

Matt Coleman is one of the most in demand Gold Coasters around. A talented Filmmaker and Videographer, he travels the world creating content for everyone from Sail Croatia to a super yacht in the Whitsunday’s and we’re not even a little bit jealous. We sat down for a chat with Matt about working from Morocco to Main Beach and how a kid from the Coast (who was once a semi-pro gamer) came to be living the dream.

How long have you been a Gold Coast local?
Born and raised baby!

What do you love most about living here?
I love the lifestyle and the ability to have a healthy work life balance… there are not many cities around the world where you can go surfing before work.

You’re a videographer and filmmaker, how did that career come about for you?
Like most young kids I was into computer games and I became semi-professional in high school. I recorded my games and made videos and uploaded them on YouTube. After that I always had a love for creating, I went on to creating some fun videos with friends and eventually starting shooting surfing which has been my passion since a kid and it went on from there.

You travel a lot, what are some of the best places you’ve been for work?
Work has taken me to some crazy places around the world including California, South Africa, Dubai, Croatia, London, Canada, Greece, Bali, Morocco, New Zealand and I will be heading to Japan shortly.

You’ve considered moving to LA, why did you decide to stay on the Gold Coast?
Moving to LA has been a dream of mine, I had the opportunity this year to move but decided not to. I’ve spent a number of years building great relationships with my clients and the demand for film and video content is continuing to build year on year. At the end of the day, I just couldn’t leave my family, friends and the Gold Coast lifestyle behind.

What have been some of your favourite projects to create?
Some of my favourite projects would be filming a super yacht in the Whitsundays and shooting for Sailaway Europe, so I would say tourism jobs in general. Capturing the dream of travel and exploration is always a lot of fun.

What’s your ultimate dream project and/or client?
That is a tough one, there are so many projects on my list I would love to be involved in but I think shooting some of the super yachts throughout Europe would be up there.

What’s on for the rest of 2019 for you?
I have a few smaller trips toward the end of the year and many clients booking in to have their festive season content ready to go so it looks like the last quarter will be a busy one!

Tell us your favourites on the Coast…
Coffee spot: The Yard
Place for breakfast: Alfreds Diner
Restaurant for dinner: Etsu and Rick Shores
How does your weekend usually look: If I’m not shooting, I’ll definitely be catching a wave somewhere on the Coast, followed by an Alfreds burrito and having a spicy margarita with a few mates later on.
