Middle-earth lands at HOTA this July.
Sharpen your swords, lace up your hairy Hobbit feet, and cue the Elvish fanfare – because The Lord of the Rings – A Musical Tale is coming to the Gold Coast. And not to brag (OK, we’re totally bragging), but HOTA has snagged the only Queensland stop on the entire Australian tour. That’s right: Middle-earth is officially making a pit stop in Surfers Paradise.
From 4th to 13th July, HOTA’s stage will be transformed into a mythical world of Hobbits, elves and very cursed jewellery. Based on J.R.R. Tolkien’s legendary trilogy, this acclaimed stage production takes the iconic story of Frodo’s epic quest and reimagines it as a visually stunning, musically epic theatrical experience.
Fans of the books and films will recognise the story: a brave Hobbit must journey across Middle-earth to destroy a powerful ring before it falls into the wrong hands (we’re looking at you, Sauron). But this time, it comes with a soaring original score, dynamic choreography, actor-musicians, and a whole lot of stage magic. It’s Middle-earth like you’ve never seen – or heard – before.
Directed by renowned theatre-maker Paul Hart, the production has toured through the UK, US and New Zealand, earning rave reviews along the way. Critics are calling it “a visual marvel… epic and fantastical” (Broadway World) and “the greatest show on Middle-earth” (The Guardian UK). Big claims? Maybe. Deserved? Absolutely.
And let’s talk cast, shall we? Leading the fellowship is Australian musical theatre royalty Jemma Rix, best known for casting spells as Elphaba in the Melbourne, Sydney, Australian and Asian touring productions of Wicked. Ian Stenlake (Sea Patrol) plays the sinister Saruman, Rob Mallett becomes our rugged ranger Strider, and Rarmian Newton steps into the furry feet of Frodo Baggins. We’re obsessed already.
The all-star ensemble also features Laurence Boxhall as Gollum, Wern Mak as the ever-loyal Samwise Gamgee, Hannah Buckley as Pippin, Stefanie Caccamo as Arwen, Terence Crawford as Gandalf, and a full cast of powerhouse performers ready to bring the realms of elves, dwarves and men to life.
And the timing? Perfect. The show arrives just in time for the winter school holidays – ideal for families, Tolkien nerds, musical theatre buffs or anyone looking for a little magic and mayhem on their night out.
Whether you’re a lifelong fan of the books, a die-hard film lover, or someone who just enjoys a good sword fight paired with a catchy chorus, The Lord of the Rings – A Musical Tale is the live event of the year. And the fact it’s exclusive to HOTA in Queensland? A big win for the Gold Coast.
So dust off your cloaks, prep your lembas bread and gather your fellowship – tickets are on sale now, and you won’t want to miss this epic journey.
