92.5 Triple M Gold Breakfast co-host and Olympic gold medallist.
Leisel Jones’ list of acheivements is long, too long for this short little intro in fact. The brief recap is Leisel Jones is a highly successful competition breaststroke swimmer, who was in fact the first Australian swimmer to compete in four Olympic Games. But after winning three gold, five silver and one bronze medal across the Sydney 2000, Athens 2004, Beijing 2008 and London 2012 Olympics, Leisel decided to hang up her togs from professional swimming for good. Like many athletes when they retire from their sporting career, Leisel had a world of opportunity ahead of her, and we’re all grateful that she decided to embark on a media career in radio. After three years as part of the Triple M Brisbane Rush Hour crew, we’re excited to see this year what Leisel has in store for Gold Coast listeners as she joins the fresh new 92.5 Triple M Gold Breakfast with Liam Flanagan and Spida Everitt.
What do you love the most about the Gold Coast?
The lifestyle. It’s so unique. There’s nowhere in Australia that is quite like living on the GC. It’s about enjoying the sun, walking along the beach, coffees with mates and living life to the fullest. Who wouldn’t love that?
Tell us a little bit about yourself.
My whole life has revolved around sport since I learnt to swim at the age of two. The sporting world is very intense in the way of winning but also relaxed in the way that you can be a big personality too. I feel like I have taken a lot of my previous life into my radio life. Behind the scenes as a swimmer, I did like to have fun but when it came to competing it was game on. Now I get to enjoy all the fun in radio without the seriousness of training.
You are joining the 92.5 Triple M Gold breakfast show this year. Tell us a bit about that.
I can’t wait to start at 92.5 Triple M Gold Breakfast. Having worked on the GC with The Rush Hour, I have an understanding of local issues and what they find amusing. This is going to be a whole other level. I will be fully immersed in the GC lifestyle, and I can’t wait for that. I also love the music on Triple M Gold. I’m an 80’s baby so I love Tina Turner, Peter Gabriel and Fleetwood Mac. It’s right up my alley!
What can listeners expect?
A lot more insight into my life. We have more time to really get into local stories, our lives and what matters to the Gold Coast. We have a lot of fun, and can be borderline inappropriate at times (mostly me putting my foot in it unknowingly). Listeners will be able to hear the real me. This is what I am like. I don’t pretend to be something I’m not. My life is fun and I want to be able to share that in an authentic way.
You’ve already achieved so much in and out of the pool. What inspired you to jump into the world of radio?
I have been so lucky to do this for three years now but I still feel like I have a lot to learn. I took an opportunity when a phone call came through asking me if I would like to trial for radio. I just said yes and I’m so glad I did. It has been so much fun. Radio is unique in the way that most people listen in their car and that can be an intimate experience, where you are in a personal space with people going about their mornings. It’s a real privilege to share that time with listeners. I don’t say this lightly but we become your mates and I don’t take that for granted.
What’s the best thing about working on the radio?
I don’t have to wear makeup! I really enjoy dressing up and feeling glam but most of the time I like to be natural. I used to get up at 4am and go to a pool which was never glamorous, and this is similar. I try and put in some effort but there’s no pressure.
What’s your proudest career moment?
Nothing beats winning individual Olympic Gold. I worked for decades to win and it was elusive which makes it all that much sweeter. The countless hours training, the physical and mental pain, the personal challenges and growing as a person, to finally win will forever be one of my greatest achievements.
What does the future have in store?
More adventures! I can’t wait. In 2025 I have committed myself to getting out and exploring. Whether it be day trips to the Hinterland, trial walks or swimming in the ocean, I’m getting out there and enjoying it all. I’m not sure about the distant future as I never thought I would be where I am today so who knows?
What are your Gold Coast favourites?
Café: Oasis & Co Coffee. It’s a hole in the wall coffee shop and the coffee is Melbourne-level coffee. It’s so good! And their toasties….don’t get me started.
Restaurant: Gemelli Italian at Broadbeach. Their Mt Tamborine burrata with fresh focaccia is something else!
Bar: Not actually a bar but I live for margaritas (it’s basically my personality). The margs at Bonita Bonita Mermaid are so good. Must have a salty rim!
Beach: As a teenager I was at Burleigh nearly every weekend so I can’t go past something I know. The southern end is so beautiful.
How do you choose to spend your days off?
My 2025 promise to myself is adventure so I will be out exploring. New places, walks with friends and generally out and about. And more ocean swimming. I don’t get in a pool much anymore, so I am going to be in the ocean so much more. So a swim, coffee and enjoying the sun.
