The new Burleigh pit-stop for boutique vino.

Think back to a time when local ‘neighbourhood stores’ were king and a dime-a-dozen. Where you could source groceries, deli goods and vino in an authentic and soulful space, and where the store owners actually knew you. Like, really knew you. A place where it was one of life’s true pleasures to pick up your weekly vitals (because wine IS a vital), as you perused lovingly – and ethically – sourced goodies thoughtfully presented on the shop floor. Well guess what….this now elusive unicorn of a bygone era is BACK! The name is Flor Wine and Grocer and it’s taken up residence in our very own Burleigh. Oh hey!

“Authenticity matters” is the mantra at Flor and we reckon owners Peter Rogers, Jarome Smith and Randy Shaw have hit the nail on the head. We’ve been craving something like this to fill the void and quench our thirst for a local corner store with old-school heart, but with ‘on-trend’ 2022 feels. Successfully executing this was a delicate process but these guys understand the nuances of both vibes, and have delivered a gem which is not just a part of the neighbourhood, but will become part of your way of life.

From the bold but welcoming red stacked tiles and wooden trim of the exterior, to the soft arch-like wooden beams extending up to the roof inside, Zero 9 Constructions and AJAR Studio have worked their magic and produced a beauty. It’s as cool and impeccably styled as it is familiar and enticing…and wait until you see the ah-mazing line-up up of natural, new wave and classic wines crafted & distributed by inspiring small producers/distributors from around the globe. Not to mention the spray-free and organic produce along with handmade small goods hailing from across the Coast & the Northern New South Wales area, displayed on the beautiful curved blonde wood shelving.

They also carry a select range of the highest quality conservas & specialty pantry items from the GC and around the world, supporting their ‘local meets international’ vision. If you want to share the love and send some of their impressive not-run-of-the-mill wines to your friends and fam interstate, Bob’s your uncle – they ship nationally. And, if you live in the local Burleigh area, they’ll even personally deliver your vino because that’s just the kinda service you get at Flor.

Not sure which of Flor’s beverages will best accompany the decadent cheeses, deli meats and fresher than fresh veg you’ve just purchased? May we recommend the Lucy Margaux Le Vilain Gris Pétillant 2021, a cheeky pétillant naturel, with Pinot Gris coming from Robert Surmann’s 30-year-old vines in Totness. Or for those of you more partial to a red, splurge a little and pick yourself up a bottle (or 2) of organic Ngeringa Single Vineyard Syrah 2013 from the Adelaide Hills. You really can’t go wrong.

We can’t wait to embrace our new local bodega, make it a regular stop during our weekly quest for quality produce and grape juice, and get to know the faces behind the revival of an old (but new again) friend.

Where: 5/3 Park Ave, Burleigh
When: Wednesday to Monday, 11am to 8pm. Closed Tuesdays.

Ever wished for a place that would marry up the finest continental deli eats, with a boutique bottle shop offering a constantly rotating selection of small-batch produced beer, wine and spirits? A place that strikes that elusive balance between being approachable-cool and not pretentious? Well colour me happy, a group of passionate and savvy local heroes heard your cries and came to the party with Rob Roy Deli & Drinks.

Located in Tweed Heads, Rob Roy is everything we’d hoped it would be. It brings a slice of Europe to the southern GC’s/Northern NSW takeaway deli scene, showcasing only the best handpicked local and international produce and boozy beverages.

Brought to life by a line-up of local F&B gurus including Bread Social founding trio Paul Giddings, Sam Saulwick and Tom Scott, talented chef Adam Vaughan and esteemed sommelier Lyndon Ridgway-Browne, this place was always destined for great things. The gents cleverly enlisted Pep Build and DS Tile and Stone to help bring their brick and mortar vision to reality. With inviting wooden floors and cabinetry, exposed brick interior, raw surfaces and rustic old-school warmth, you’ll feel very much at home as soon as you step inside.

The beautifully presented array of deli eats will feed the eyes just as must as much as the stomach. The lads offer a sensational range of cheese and charcuterie which can be freshly cut to order, taking your platter from zero to hero. You can also bag a rich variety of flavour-elevating ingredients to propel your home cooking to unprecedented levels of yum. If you’re looking for a something to elevate your next meal, the team are creating some epic in-house garlic oils, truffle honey, salt rubs and the like.

But if a quick bite to eat while you’re out is calling your name, you can’t go past Roby Roy’s European Style Deli Sub, which is seriously shut up delish featuring fresh bread from The Bread Social (located only a couple of doors up).

Now let’s talk grog! Rob Roy’s broad range of wine has something for everyone, including great value picks for the more budget-conscious.  And kudos is due here as they love featuring small winemakers who farm responsibly and sustainably, which we think makes them the shiz.

They also stock an extensive range of beer styles, from local and imported big-time classics to the epic ever-evolving craft beers. Their range changes regularly to feature seasonal styles, new offerings, and different producers to keep us on our toes. With some interesting flavours coming out of breweries these days, it’s nice to know that at Rob Roy’s, you can pick and mix. Rather than committing to a six pack of unqiuely flavoured beer, you can buy six individual cans and get 15% off to boot! Winner winner.

Last but not least, you’ll heart their interesting mix of spirits and take-home cocktails, presented in their very own Rob Roy bottles (your drinks cart is begging for one). You can also pick up other cocktail ingredients, garnishes and accessories to whip up cocktail-bar-quality at home. They love to shake, stir, serve neat or on the rocks, and will happily pass their intel on to any aspiring home bartender. Oh and what’s their signature cocktail you ask? The Rob Roy. Naturally.

No longer will you feel like the real Scottish outlaw Rob Roy when you cross the border, instead be the hero and visit Rob Roy Deli & Drinks stat.

Where: 20 Bay St, Tweed Heads
When: Monday to Thursday 10am to 8pm. Friday and Saturday 10am to 9pm. Sunday 10am to 7pm

SOMM is your new partner in wine

SOMM Wine Store interior (Image: © 2021 Inside Gold Coast)

The world of wine and the talks around it can sometimes come off as a little showy and confusing for the everyday Australian. Yet our admiration for this fermented grape juice remains unaffected; enjoying a slurp of Shiraz over the BBQ or a slosh of Chardonnay by the beach are, by far, still some of our favourite pastimes. And this is where the real opportunity lies —bridging the gap from incredible wine and the people who make it to our thirsty glasses whilst sidestepping any swanky behaviour along the way.

Taking this ideal and running with it full steam ahead is the Gold Coast’s newly opened SOMM Wine Store in Nobby Beach.

Husband and wife duo Joe and Natalie are the masterminds behind SOMM, and both extend from families with long Italian Heritage. Joe, in particular, has worked in wine distribution for just shy of two decades, and although he has extensively travelled throughout Europe tasting all of the delectable wines — as you do when one is in Europe — he still knows and appreciates the good producers and emerging styles we have right here in our very own backyard.

SOMM Wine Store (Image: © 2021 Inside Gold Coast)
SOMM Wine Store (Image: © 2021 Inside Gold Coast)

Stepping inside the sustainably built shop space, you’ll discover sophisticated and minimalistic styling punctuated by rows of perfectly lined and colourful wine labels presenting boundless opportunities to escort your tastebuds far, far away. Browse a while, and you’ll find your favourite grape varieties — but with the likelihood of seeing some winemakers and regions you aren’t familiar with. And this is where it gets fun.

SOMM offers you the chance to discuss your tastes with their in-store experts; somebody will always be on hand to give you the low down. Expect conversations including “this producer’s winemaking style is like…”, or “this region makes fantastic wine because of their prevailing weather.” Really, these are some of the best conversations if you ask us!

The team want you to leave the store with a bottle — or two — of something you are going to love, and whether it’s something you’re familiar with or never even heard of before, it doesn’t matter one inch. The emphasis is to proudly showcase family-owned Australian winemakers with distinct styles, wines that you will genuinely enjoy drinking.

You will, however, find an array of European classics weaved throughout, alongside new-age orange wines and Pétillant Naturel (AKA Pét-Nat’s). If you’ve longed to give one of these a go, a little something left of centre, then this is your very chance to do so. Albeit with some friendly advice and guidance thrown in for good measure.

Dynamic and welcoming, whether you’re popping in on a weeknight for a little something to accompany dinner or looking for some stellar wines to go alongside a large family lunch: SOMM will cater for all tastes.

And for those with a curious outlook, you’ll be pleased to learn from 4pm on Saturdays the guys will be holding weekly tastings, where they’ll discuss and give you the chance to taste a selection of wines. Possibly the best ‘try before you buy’ we’ve ever heard of!

They say the best things in life are free. And although this remains true for the most part, whoever came up with this sentiment must have momentarily forgotten about delicatessen-style foods. Russian Delights
Those with family ties to Eastern Europe or Russia often know only too well how hard it can be to find foods from the old country here in Australia. One place that disrupts and challenges this status quo are the good guys at Russian Delights.
