Waffles are a highly underrated sweet breakfast dish, not quite a pancake, but equally as delicious.
Hailing from Belgium, and extremely popular in the US, the thick golden, lattice-like treats are somewhat of a rare delicacy in Australia.
However there are a few places on the Gold Coast serving up the sweet, topping laden goodness and in honour of World Waffle Day this weekend, here’s a list of the top spots (listed from north to south).
Expect next level waffles at the mecca of chocolatey goodness – Max Brenner. The options are endless but you can’t go past the Munchie Waffles with your choice of two ice cream flavors, whipped cream, milk chocolate ganache and Choco-Pops. It’s a sugar coma waiting to happen.

Surfers Paradise Beach Café
Served four ways, the Surfers Paradise Beach Café waffles appeal to both the health conscious – topped with fresh fruit and maple syrup or everyone’s favourite spread Nutella and a hint of cream. Waffles your way, what could be better?

Easy Street Diner
An American-style diner serving up traditional style eats, Easy Street Diner bring you a combination you never thought possible – chicken and waffles. That’s right, Belgian waffles baked to order with southern chicken tenders, maple syrup and whipped butter. Additional crispy bacon comes highly recommended.
Gold Coast Highway, Mermaid Beach (between Peerless and Sunbrite Ave)
The guys at Ball Boy have invented their own style of waffle and it’s all kinds of delicious. Served as a side on the ‘School Tray’ the Waffle Hash is a potato mash up, waffle style and should be a meal unto itself. Ask for an extra couple, you won’t regret it.
2475 Gold Coast Highway, Mermaid Beach (opposite Putt Putt Mermaid Beach)
A sweet option in a menu filled with burgers and burritos, Alfred’s Diner’s Cinnamon Waffles are a pure delight. Served with cinnamon vanilla mascarpone, maple syrup, seasonal fruit and icing sugar, these little beauties go perfectly with your morning cup of joe in the sunshine.
