Clean Up Australia Day

The City of Gold Coast is encouraging local residents to jump on board the Hopo Ferry for a clean up mission around the coast.

The annual Clean Up Australia Day will be held on Sunday 5 March and Hopo is enticing the community to take part by offering FREE ferry travel for the day for anyone that registered and participated in the clean-up.

A free clean up kit will be given to Hopo’s participants on the day.

“Clean Up Australia Day is an opportunity for the Gold Coast to come together and engage with the local community and the environment as well as raising awareness of the harmful effects of litter,” Mayor Tom Tate said.

“We are expecting this year’s Clean Up Australia Day to be the biggest that the Gold Coast has seen in the City’s nearly 30 years of support.

“So, jump on board the Hopo Ferry, join one of the other cleaning sites already set up or organise your own clean up event.”

Let’s show our pride for this beautiful city we live in.”

With 144 sites already registered, the number of participants this year has exceeded last year’s figures.

Last year there were 137 sites registered, with over 4,300 volunteers taking part and approximately 325.6 tonnes of waste collected across the city.

The collected material is disposed of at landfill sites, while recyclable materials are separated where possible.
