El Patio de Cuba

New menu: prepare to be Havana feast.

Cuban-inspired restaurant El Patio De Cuba, in Surfers Paradise, has recently launched a new menu and it’s filled with all the colour and flavour you’d expect from its country of origin.

The Josper menu, named after the speciality oven the dishes are cooked in, boasts smoky, authentic food and mouth-watering flavours from entrees through to desserts.

Both an oven and a griller, the Josper can reach temperatures over 500 degrees Celsius and can be found in modern Spanish kitchens. This rare appliance is unique to El Patio de Cuba and there are only a few within Australia.

Now, on to what the Josper can create!

Entrees are aplenty and vary from ‘Spanish Paprika Marinated Prawns on pineapple skewers with pear and mustard sauce’ to ‘Charred Cha Cha Chorizo tossed in rosemary, thyme, garlic and honey’. All the flavours are infused and sealed into these tasty openers.

Vegetarians and vegetable lovers will enjoy the Mushrooms with goat’s cheese and leek gratin and the Charred Corn on the Cob with Parmesan and sweet chilli oil.

If you’re not full yet, the main of choice is the Cuban Style Sirloin Steak, deliciously marinated in Cuban herbs and spices and accompanied by popular South American plantains, roast pumpkin and herbalicious chimichurri sauce. Cooked in the Josper, the steak is tender, smoky and delightfully complements the crispy vegetables.

The dessert menu should not be ignored either, particularly the Spanish Churros. These little sugar cinnamon morsels are served with dark chocolate dipping sauce and Bailey’s infused cream.

It’s a party in your mouth, all washed down with a sweet, refreshing Cuban Mojito.

HOURS: 11am to 11pm daily.

LOCATION: Chevron Renaissance Shopping Centre, Surfers Paradise Blvd, Surfers Paradise.

SNEAK PEEK: Knox Dining

Hold onto your hats Surfers Paradise, your foodie scene is a-changin’. On Friday the 14th of July we welcome Knox Dining to Circle on Cavill and with it comes a long overdue healthy eating option in a suburb filled with fast food.

Owners (and brothers) Brad and Greg Turvey have a combined 30 years’ experience in the hospitality scene and decided to open the sophisticated Hamptons-esque space in Surfers Paradise after noticing a need for wholesome, good-for-you meal options.

Knox Dining is leading the way in the suburbs’ soon to be evolving dining scene and, fitout with natural wood, polished concrete and a neon “this must be the place” sign, is certainly gunning to change the way people see Surfers.

The food, although technically not “health food”, will appeal to those who are conscious of what they eat while still offering the comfort foods we know and love and all with a distinctive Asian twist.

The Gratin Egg in Avocado Cocotte not only looks like health personified, it is in fact full of goodness including a 64 degree sous vide egg in a dukkah spiced half avocado, with Swiss gruyere cheese on a bed of raw broccoli slaw. Phew!

Meat lovers don’t go past the Beef Loco Moco – a grass fed beef pattie on brown, black and red rice, topped with a fried egg and masala gravy.

Of course there are an array of protein packed salads, fresh juices and smoothies, all of which are available through The ‘Lil Ox, a takeaway window for those who need to eat (or drink coffee) on the run.

Inside tip: order a hot drink purely to experience the tasty side sensation that is a Matcha cookie.

Happy days Surfers Paradise, happy days.

Steampunk

Featuring gadgets, industrial machinery, mechanical horses and exposed copper, all specially sourced and imported, Surfers Paradise’ latest bar and restaurant is the perfect visual representation of the genre after which it’s named.

Steampunk refers to a fantasy subgenre in which those living in the Victorian era imagined their lives to be. It’s all about mixing old and new: fusing the usability of modern technology with the design aesthetic and philosophy of the Victorian age.

Hailing from Tasmania, owner Grant Rodgers has plenty of experience working in historical venues and made the move to the Gold Coast to open Steampunk, the first restaurant of its kind in Australia, after seeing an opportunity for something unique.

The menu is unlike anything else around including share plates of Scorched Bugs with corn and chilli salsa to Crab and Corn Arancinci with smoked paprika aioli and Topped Mini Fillet Steaks (three ways).

If you’re more of a solo eater try the Chilli Salt Local Cuttlefish Thai Salad or House Gnocchi with Haloumi, spinach, tomatoes and fried sage.

The cocktail list is divided into tantalising sections, there’s Toothsome, Sourish, Perplexing, Enchanting and Mind Altering – don’t go past The Enigma made with Makers Mark bourbon, orange and salt or the Juicy Bruiser – Absolut Vodka with Passionfruit juice, lime, Prosecco and a little surprise on presentation.

Offering all day eats and an exciting cocktails menu, Steampunk is the Surfers Paradise anti-nightclub – a place to enjoy some drinks and a bite to eat without having to be involved in the frantic pace of neighboring venues.

HOURS: 11am until late daily.

LOCATION: 3113 Surfers Paradise Bvld (opposite Billabong), Surfers Paradise.
