Everything that opened last month.
Happy New Year Gold Coasters! We hope you had a relaxing festive season with a little time off thrown in for good measure.
As always, we had a slew of exceptional new venues open last month and as always, we have popped them right here in the one place so you can catch up should need somewhere new to dine and sip.
We’ve got a feeling 2021 is going to bring us even more epic newbies so stay tuned.
Mr Potato
If there is a food we love above all others, it is the potato. So versatile, so delicious. Which is why it was with great pleasure that we visited Palm Beach newbie Mr Potato who offer DIY baked potatoes that are not only topped with healthy goodness but delicious too. We were big fans of The ‘Aussie’ Tator with beef ragu, bacon, kale-slaw or coleslaw, beetroot, carrot and pineapple but they’re all amazing guys. Get on it.

Ohanas
A fruity, Hawaiian-inspired bar and eatery was exactly what Surfers Paradise needed and exactly what Surfers Paradise got in the form of Ohanas. Serving up a tasty, tapas-style menu plus sweet, unique cocktails like the Get Lei’d, made up of Gold Coast Gin and liqueurs from Tamborine Mountain Distillery, there are plenty of goodies to sample.
Where: 64 Ferny Avenue, Surfers Paradise
La Bella Cellar
Burleigh Heads latest comes compete with an entryway stacked with incredible bottles of wine to enjoy with a dinner that’ll knock your socks off. La Bella Cellar is an intimate, beautifully fitout space and a menu filled with Italian-inspired eats (including epic pizzas) and a cocktail list you’ll want to revisit time and time again. It’s the perfect little addition to the beachside fave and we recommend testing it out ASAP.
Where: 9/3 Deodar Drive, Burleigh Heads
Split and Mali
While this good time pair technically opened in November, we visited in December so here we are. The eclectic pair – Split and Mali – are a rooftop bar and a downstairs café situation and they boast an epic menu filled with delights like Prawn & Squid Ink Arrancini, Squeaky Cheese with honey and thyme and Mama Filipovic’s Dusted Calamari to name a few. There are some epic cocktails to sip on and fun interiors to keep you entertained.
Where: 2215 Gold Coast Highway, Nobby Beach
The Oyster Shed
The lucky folks of Tweed Heads gained an excellent newbie in the form of The Oyster Shed in late December and it is one you’re going to want to brave that border crossing for. By the people who own Catch a Crab, the newbie is indeed a shed-style situation right on the water, serving up the freshest of seafood (oysters any way, prawns, all the goods) plus a tapas menu with delicious fish tacos and chicken skewers to name a few. There’s also frosty cold beers, cocktails and wine and we HIGHLY recommend a trip down there.
Where: Birds Bay Drive, Tweed Heads
Little Cooly
Pizza and pasta are right up there with potatoes in terms of our favourite things and conveniently Coolangatta newbie Little Cooly is providing both, along with lovely ocean views no less. Dishes shine a light on local produce, The Snapper Rocks pizza features Tweed River prawns, mango, cashews and avocado or The Greenmount features Bangalow bacon, spicy chorizo, a fried egg and mozzarella and it’s the goods.
Where: Level 1, Shop 120/72-80 Marine Parade, Coolangatta
That’s a lot of amazing newbies Gold Coasters, make sure you try them all.

Ahh, the blessed ritual of brunch. Leisurely feasts of eggs every which way you can imagine, sticky, syrup drenched French toast stacks, and smoked salmon for days – what’s not to love? Plus, it gives us the excuse to sleep in, and our tastebuds are rewarded pretty handsomely for the trouble.
Couple it with a little concept known as bottomless cocktails and life doesn’t get much better. So universally beloved is the sip-happy cousin of this mid-morning rendezvous, we’ve rustled up an entire list of the best places on the GC to get your boozy brunch-fest fix (say that five times fast after two hours of free-flowing mimosa’s).
From north to south, gather your mates, don your stretchy pants and jump on the brunch bandwagon!
Mozza Mozza
For a surefire way to stave off the Sunday scaries, the groovy and oh-so boozy, discotheque-themed Italian feast (don’t ask questions, just go with it) going down weekly at Mozza Mozza would have to be one of the best. For $75 per person, the Sunday Bottomless Disco dishes up share-style plates such as Pizzas, Arancini Balls and House-Made Focaccia to load up on – studded by a fruity Spritz and Mimosa menu to strategically work your way through. As far as bottomless spreads go, we particularly love the options on offer here – feeling like flanking your Italian feast with a boozy slushie upgrade? Say no more, fam! Craving Mozza Puff Bread or Tiramisu? Sure thing, just add ‘em on for a fiver. You’ll be shakin’ your groove thang in no time.

Words by Bianca Trathen
Miami is quickly becoming a thriving little cultural hub known for its all-inclusive community vibes, a couple of exceptional eateries, a five-star gin distillery and plenty of creativity thrown in for good measure.
Now we can add a hidden laneway bar to the list thanks to the opening of The Hidden Cherub on Lemana Lane. Find it in the building where Heartfill Store also lives.
Boasting a laidback neighbourhood feel perfect for Friday after work drinks or a weekend sip fest, the new venue is decked out with a sleek, industrial-esque look, greenery dripping from the walls and black and white striped bench seating. Sit inside if you’re keen to hide away from the world or outside in the laneway should the weather permit sometime soon.
The bar is the main event at The Hidden Cherub and there are plenty of tipples to keep you entertained.
Starting with cocktails of course. Classic sips like Mojitos (three ways), Margaritas, Spritzes, Martinis, Old Fashioned’s and the like are on offer so all your needs are covered there.
Then there are the signature sips and you can expect treats like The Cherubs Cloud with vodka, elderflower liqueur, strawberries and apple juice, the Lil Frankie with tequila, mango chilli and lime and The Angeles with gin, Chambord, grapefruit juice, lemon and bitters.
You may also treat yourself to a dessert cocktail like Honeycomb Heaven with vodka, butterscotch, coconut cream and chocolate powder.
There’s a selection of local craft beers on tap and in a can variety and a few wines too.
Eats-wise there’s a packed menu filled with share plates, burgers, tacos, salads and sides.
Seasoned Charred Corn with cheese sauce, cashew parmesan and lime aioli, Crispy Mac ‘N’ Cheese Balls and Mozarella Stuffed Jalapeno Poppers are a few of the dishes on offer.
In terms of burgers there’s a Spicy Southern, The Hawaiian and The Classic and tacos come in combos like Tempura Avocado, Chipotle Chicken and Three Bean.
Oh and all the eats are plant-based.
