BLEACH* is back and it’s quite literally, bigger than ever! To celebrate 12 years of the festival, the team have launched their biggest program in history with even more arts, culture and entertainment for you to pack into 11 days.
With more than 300 artists, featuring 218 performances, at more than 38 events across 10 days, we guess you could say it’s BIG. So if you haven’t already, it’s time to start planning out your program so you don’t miss out!
It’s one of the most-loved festivals in the cultural calendar and this year, the BLEACH* team have upped the ante with a new Broadbeach Festival Hub that will be home to more than 20 different performances, from river concerts to cabaret there’s something for everyone.
Events and activations will be sprawled all across the city, from the main character – the North Burleigh Hub – all the way through to the Botanic Gardens in Ashmore, and HOTA, Home of the Arts and of course the lush Currumbin Valley for southern Gold Coasters.
So if you’re wondering where we are between Thursday 3rd August and Sunday 13th August, you’ll find us at one of these nine must-see events that you need to have on your radar.
FIRST LIGHT
Kicking off the BLEACH* Festival with an awe-inspiring display and your feet in the sand, the perpetual First Lights marks the official opening with a stirring 6am sunrise ceremony. Starting with a mesmerising performance of Heartland, led by the extraordinary William Barton and renowned violinist Véronique Serret, you’ll be moved by a captivating blend of song, poetry and the didgeridoo as this incredible First Nations performance unfolds with the rising sun.

RIVER SONGS
A floating barge on the Nerang River? You’ve caught our attention! Sure to be one of the stars of the BLEACH* Broadbeach Hub, the spot will set the stage for River Songs – a concert series featuring three unique sets of musicians – Claire Edwards, Yirinda and Shugorei – each delivering their own eclectic sound and style. You’ll get your own set of headphones for the ultimate immersive experience, making for an intimate affair on the riverbanks that activates all of the senses.

ENCOUNTER GOLD
Get ready to immerse yourself in the world of Encounter Gold, where nature and art come together to create the ultimate visual feast of moment, dance and spoken word. This outdoor experience fuses together contemporary art and the stunning natural surrounds, with a performance directed by award-winning choreographer Emma Saunders that features some of the country’s best and brightest artists. A visual wonderland, you won’t want to miss the energy behind this soul-stirring performance.

JONI MITCHELL’S ‘BLUE’ 50TH ANNIVERSARY
It’s the iconic album that defined a generation, so it’s only natural BLEACH* have paid homage to ‘Blue’ with a performance from ARIA-award winning songbird Katie Noonan. Pack the picnic rug and settle in for sunset while you’re serenaded to the sweet sound of this landmark album, accompanied with a five-piece band and the sweet sound of Katie Noonan, and supported by Meanjin-based artist Jo Davie, it’s a performance not to be missed.

ROLLER COASTER
Dive headfirst into the world of Roller Coaster, based on real stories it’s an emotional journey through dance, theatre and live music – on roller skates of course. Action-packed and full of tender moments, brace yourself as you take stock of the raw and vulnerable stories of the performances, thoughtfully delivered through their artistry with a mix of grace and intensity.

ACOUSTIC LIFE OF SHEDS
Ordinary spaces turned into extraordinary stages, nestled in Currumbin Valley the sell-out Acoustic Life of Sheds returns again to the BLEACH* program. Experience the magic of how music can move beyond, this is without a doubt a bucket list event you won’t want to miss. The picturesque drive through the valley is as much part of the experience and theatrics, before you sit back and soak up the travelling concert from your car, with a gourmet picnic packed with local produce to round it out – perfect!

10 MIN DANCE PARTIES
Say no more because we’ve never met a dance party we didn’t like. Bliss out with 10 minutes of beats, where you can let loose and groove to the best tunes. A collision of art, colour, costume and community, it’s the ultimate destination for a brief boogie whether you’re popping in for another BLEACH* favourite or just need a moment of dance therapy. We challenge you to not leave with a skip in your step!

HEARTBEATS DRUMMING WORKSHOP
Feel the rhythm and embrace the power of percussion at the Heartbeats Drumming Workshops. Led by experienced cultural tutors, these interactive workshops are full of fun and perfect for all ages, skill and musical levels. Take the opportunity to discover the joy of music-making and brush up on your drumming skills before you catch the Heartbeats performance the following weekend.

BLISS
It’s one of the final events in the BLEACH* calendar and we think they might’ve saved one of the best until last for a reason. Saturday night is sorted with this celestial celebration, get ready to step into another world with this sensory feat filled with pop-up performances and psychic mediums while you get ready to get down in the cosmic nightclub for one night only.

If you’ve ever had the pleasure of a pre-schooler proudly bestowing one of their glittery, glue-laden masterpieces, you’ve also probably noticed they don’t seem to care that their stick-figures resemble mildly unnerving and potato people with poltergeist vibes and eyes that follow you around #oddlyspecific.
Somewhere between the wholesome memories of the thrill of taking out a hotly-contested childhood colouring in comp and, y’know, back pain and adulthood, many of us forgot the long lost art of getting creative. But judging by the rising popularity of paint and sip (and the slightly less catchy, but equally as fun ‘clay and sip’) events – adults everywhere are craving the chance to unleash their creative side yet again and we are here. for. it.
With the second half of the year officially upon us (somehow it’s true, we checked), a couple of the GC’s favourite cultural events, Bleach* and SWELL scultpure festival are back for another year. These beloved events never fail to bring out the art appreciator in everyone young and old, no matter their creative skills.
The magic of these iconic events is watching the city transform, with the Coast coming together to immerse ourselves in the impressive experiences and celebrate the creations that talented local and international artists have been toiling away to bring to us.
Joining in on the action, Broady’s fave retail destination The Oasis is embarking on its own transformation into an arts inspired wonderland. Normally our go-to for top notch eats and sips (and a sneaky spot of credit card damage), we’ve never needed any convincing for a stop by (the aforementioned eats and sips do that alllll for us, sundowners and a pizza at Luna’s will always have our hearts #drool).
With Bleach* kicking off next month, The Oasis is bringing us the chance to soak up the artistic process in real time, with interactive appearances from some of our very own local and emerging artists. Week one (17 – 21 July) brings us the chance to be enchanted by queer Indigenous visual artist Norton Federick and mixed media visual artist Courtenay McCue of CRT Designs. And for Week two (17 – 28 July) we’ll be treated to award winning sculptor and painter Dion Parker, and large scale visual artist Camille Manley.
And if all these incredible art festivals popping up have you feeling all #inspired, don’t be chai – get in on the action and treat yourself to ‘The Art of Tea’ workshop also coming to The Oasis this September.

Better yet, when you inevitably work up an appetite from the demands of channelling your inner artiste, fall on into literally any of those top notch dining options on offer, watch the sun sink low and pat yourself on the back (with a cocktail, for best results) for supporting our local arts scene. The Tallebudgera Creek glow-up continues with the boardwalk undergoing a $3.4 million upgrade. The boardwalk follows other improvements in the popular beachfront location including upgrades on the nearby training wall and Tallebudgera Creek Park, which was completed in February.
“A new and improved boardwalk will be the final piece of the puzzle in our Tallebudgera Creek upgrades,” said Mayor Tom Tate.
“Tallebudgera Creek is one of the coast’s most popular spots for locals and visitors to enjoy the natural beauty of our city.”
“The improvements are crucial to accommodate a growing number of people and improving safety and aesthetics, as well as reducing future maintenance and boosting protection against erosion impacts from floods, storms and king tides.”
A new 4-metre-wide deck will replace the existing 2 metre boardwalk and new features will include seating, lighting and a viewing platform. The upgrade also includes new landscaping with 30 new trees being planted alongside a range of coastal vegetation. There will be new support piers constructed and a small rock wall added to provide erosion protection.
The boardwalk renewal and upgrade is supported by an Australian Government grant totalling $2,473,650 through the Local Roads and Community Infrastructure Program.
Work on the boardwalk is taking place Monday to Friday from 7am to 5pm with access along the boardwalk and beach between Tallebudgera Creek Park and dog off leash area temporarily closed. A temporary detour via the Gold Coast Highway and nearby surf club is available during construction.
The Tallebudgera Creek boardwalk project is expected to be completed in August this year.

It’s time to croc ’n’ roll as Bonza’s new Gold Coast to Darwin route delivers a bright purple streak from the Top End to the Glitter Strip. The inaugural flight from the Goldie touched down at Darwin Airport just after midnight before returning with customers travelling from the NT to Gold Coast arriving early this morning.
To mark the first flight, over the next five days more than 5,000 seats on all flights to/from Gold Coast to Darwin are on sale and can be snapped up from $89 per person (one way) for travel until the end of May 2024.*
The new twice-weekly (Tuesdays/Wednesdays and Fridays/Saturdays) Gold Coast to Darwin route complements Bonza’s other routes in and out of the NT with the Sunshine Coast-Darwin and Melbourne-Alice Springs routes providing affordable air travel to Territorians with regular fares starting from $149 (one way per person).

Gold Coast Airport today unveiled plans to deliver a future-focused precinct with the addition of a retail village, health and wellness hub and conference and tech centre as proposed in its 2024 Preliminary Draft Master Plan.
The document outlines the strategic vision and sustainable growth objectives of the airport and surrounding precinct over the next twenty years, with a more detailed focus on the initial eight years leading up to the 2032 Olympic and Paralympic Games.
Under the plan, Gold Coast Airport will reinvent itself as a destination within its own right – delivering a reimagined precinct that serves the communities of the Gold Coast and northern New South Wales.
Queensland Airports Limited CEO Amelia Evans said the Master Plan vision is to deliver an airport of the future.
“We want to be more than an airport, we’re committed to creating a mixed-use precinct that would further benefit the local community, with the addition of a retail village, health and wellness hub and a conference and tech centre,” she said.

An all-new Uber pickup zone has landed at Gold Coast Airport, providing a seamless and comfortable experience for arriving passengers.
Uber riders now have access to a dedicated Waiting Lounge inside the arrivals area of the terminal, before meeting their driver directly in front of Gold Coast Airport, outside baggage reclaim. The lounge is the first of its kind globally, with the built-in space featuring lounge seating and amenities for arriving travellers.
Queensland Airports Limited’s Chief Operating Officer Marion Charlton said the new partnership with Uber is about providing customers with an exceptional experience at Gold Coast Airport.
The construction of the new Uber pickup zone also provided an opportunity to enhance the safety and accessibility at the front of the terminal – including additional ramps and a dedicated accessible pickup bay.
The taxi zone at Gold Coast Airport has also been relocated to the front of the Southern Terminal Expansion, providing greater space and flexibility for drivers as the precinct extends. “For our customers who prefer to take a taxi, we’ve dedicated a brand-new area to them as well with seating and shade in front of our new terminal building,” Ms Charlton said.

A contemporary, new wedding and events venue, ‘The Homestead’ is now taking bookings. Nestled amongst the scenic backdrop of the Currumbin Wildlife Sanctuary, the venue forms the signature feature of the award-winning attractions’ newest precinct.

As the festive season draws near, Animal Welfare League Queensland (AWLQ) is calling on the community to open their hearts and homes for the annual “Home for Christmas” adoption campaign, running from 12 to 24 December 2023, across all AWLQ Animal Rehoming Centres.
Adoption prices will be drastically reduced throughout the 12 days, with cats from $29 and dogs from $99, making it more affordable for people to give the gift of a forever home to a furry friend in need.
AWLQ spokesperson Craig Montgomery said the adoption campaign aims to grant homeless animals the most precious gift they could receive this festive season – a place to call home.

Parkwood Village is set to be transformed into a world-class integrated golf and surf village after the mixed-use development received Development Approval today.

Asia’s leading great value medium haul airline AirAsia X today announces the resumption of the popular Gold Coast – Auckland route from 3 February 2024 in response to strong demand.
At the same time the airline will be suspending services on the Auckland – Sydney route from 31 January 2024 to facilitate the new services to and from the Gold Coast.
Queensland Airports Limited Chief Commercial Officer Adam Rowe said the return of AirAsia X’s Gold Coast to Auckland connection would provide more options for travellers.

A new breakfast hotspot is set to open in Nobby Beach’s most anticipated new retail and dining village, with Buoy (pronounce boo-ee) to call The Oxley home from late November.
From the brains behind Burleigh Heads institution Seadog, Buoy will introduce a whole new concept based on the premise of serving locals and beyond with a range of elevated breakfast favourites, focusing on quality produce curated from a hand-selected assortment of suppliers.
Founder Brodie Green was firm on ensuring Buoy took things back to basics, paring back the menu to be less on frills but big on flavour.
“Breakfasts have gotten too complicated because of Instagram, and we think people are over it. Gold Coasters want their classic breakfasts back. We’ll be doing an all day breakfast menu from 5am-5pm.,” said Brodie.
Whether you are after a grab-and-go experience or a full dine-in, Buoy has a hole-in-the-wall section as an ode to the original Seadog that hailed from a vacant ATM space, while also offering a cosy and intimate dine-in space with comfortability at the core of it.

When it came to choosing the right design studio to help them create their first world class Seafood Restaurant -BLOWFISH Ocean Grill + Bar, Steve & Autumn didn’t think twice – they knew it had to be Gold Coast based SPACE CUBED DESIGN STUDIO.
SPACE CUBED Associate Interior Designer Jill Chilton has been the lead on this project and has created an immersive coastal dining experience.
“The interior concept takes a romantic approach to the idea that – “We are all of the sea”. The clients wanted to create an immersive dining experience for their guests, and this narrative is carried throughout the venue through the expression of materials and details that all share a coastal sensibility. Our decisions were largely inspired by the mythical tales of the seductively beautiful creatures that lured mariners with their siren songs, resulting in a serene, yet whimsical dining experience,” said Jill.
One of the unique features of the restaurant is the private dining space – The Ripple Room which is located on the upper floor. In contrast to the sea green, pearly white and sun-bleached timber that adorns the downstairs area, the design The Ripple Room embraces the darker colours of the ocean depths, and the qualities of iridescent fish scales.

Off track entertainmnet for October’s Boost Mobile Gold Coast 500 has been confirmed, with seven of Australia’s best live acts to perform over three nights within the track precinct, thansk to a new strategic partnership between Mushrrom Group and Supercars.
The Presets, Client Liaison, Illy, Havana Brown, Mashd N Kutcher, John Course and DJ Total Eclipse will all light up the stage within the race precinct from 27-29 October 2023, as world-class entertainment returns for Queensland’s biggest annual sporting event.

HOTA, Home of the Arts announces its upcoming Children’s Gallery exhibition, Colour Your Imagination – Just add book, officially opening to the public on Saturday 19th August in line with National Book Week.

In celebration of the Matildas’ World Cup success, Australia’s newest airline Bonza has promised to name its next aircraft ‘Matilda’. The airline so far has four aircraft named Shazza, Bazza, Sheila and Malc. The fifth plane, due to arrive next year after the Gold Coast base launch, will take pride of place in the Aussie skies with Matilda proudly painted on its side.
“Like the rest of the nation, our team of legends have been gripped by Matilda Mania thanks to their sportsmanship, mateship with one another and their pride in wearing the green and gold. As an airline that is solely focussed on Australia, it seemed fitting to name our next aircraft Matilda,” said Carly Povey, Chief Commercial Officer at Bonza.
Bonza’s route map includes 17 destinations and 33 routes with flights sold through the Fly Bonza app or local travel agents. The airline made headlines last year when it asked to ‘nick the nicknames’ for its existing fleet. Povey says naming the planes has personified the aircraft and given them all unique personalities amongst Bonza’s team and customers.

With 25% of all Australian produce not even leaving the farm, Good & Fugly launched its offering in Sydney in 2020 to help fight Australia’s food waste epidemic. The team have since delivered over 620,000 kgs of quirky fruit & veg to consumers, helping save perfectly imperfect produce deemed cosmetically unsuitable for supermarkets from going to waste.
With boxes and delivery being roughly 20% below the supermarkets, it’s an easy way to combat the rising cost of living while doing good for the planet.
Every box will be filled with fresh, seasonal produce direct from farmers, bundled with loving care and delivered direct to consumers’ doors for a small delivery fee. Bonza has today revealed its third base will be Gold Coast Airport with two aircraft confirmed to operate from the iconic holiday spot to 11 existing Bonza destinations: Albury, Bundaberg, Cairns, Gladstone, Mackay, Melbourne Avalon, Melbourne Tullamarine, Mildura, Rockhampton, Townsville and the Whitsunday Coast.
Flights will be on sale very soon, through the airline’s app, which is the only place to book direct. Starting fares will range from $49 to $79 per person one way. Travellers are urged to sign up in the Fly Bonza app today to be the first to know when the new routes are on sale.
The airline says there will be additional and new destinations that will connect with the Gold Coast and those will be revealed when the time is right: “We’ll be adding new destinations to our route map that will fly from the Gold Coast and we continue to welcome conversations with airports around the country as we fulfil our mission to connect communities. Our focus continues to be on unserved and underserved markets that we know would benefit from low cost flights,” said Tim Jordan, CEO of Bonza.
Queensland Airports Limited CEO Amelia Evans said the new partnership between Gold Coast Airport and Bonza will provide a big boost to the local economy.
