Ahh whisky, you burny little beauty, how we love you so. So tasty, so diverse, so satisfying.
Seems a few Gold Coast venues agree and we love them very much. In honour of, nothing really, just whisky, here’s a list of the very best spots to sip the delightful liquid and invite us, will you please.
Last Night on Earth
Let it be known that if it were our last night on earth, we would be drinking whisky so that works pretty well when discussing Southport’s favourite dive bar, new(ish)bie Last Night on Earth. They’ve got quite the tasty selection of whisky to wet your whistle and all within a dark, moody, good time vibe kind of space.
Where: 50b Nerang St, Southport
Quite obviously, Japanese whisky is a real treat and where better to sip up a storm than Yamagen Japanese? Nowhere friends. They’re got an impressive array of whisky’s on offer if enjoying the tipple on ice is your thing and if not, the Kyoto Old Fashioned is an absolute stunner with Japanese whisky Yuzu bitters, Gyokora tea and foam. Life changing.

The Loose Moose
The Loose Moose is the cheeky, good time bar Broadbeach adores and they’ve got it going on when it comes to whisky (and other tipples). The brick walls are lined with over 130 whisky’s, and paired with some US-style eats (chicken wings for the wing), what more could you want from an evening, or day if that’s your thing, of sipping the beloved spirit.
Where: The Oasis Shopping Centre, Surf Pde, Broadbeach
We love Etsu for all of the reasons. The low-lit interior, the epic eats, the guaranteed good vibes and, of course, their HUGE range of Japanese whisky. It’s one of the biggest in Australia and if you needed another reason to go there, here it is folks. The She’s cute but shiso sour is one of our absolute fave cocktails with Kakubin Japanese whisky shaken with lime, shiso leaves and Etsu’s very own barrel aged Japanese amaro. It’s actual heaven.

The Cambus Wallace
It’s one of the very best Gold Coast drinking holes thanks to vintage, nautical vibes and the home of a high quality drinking session. Cambus’ selection of whisky’s is solid and, so dedicated are they to whisky drinking, they dedicated a whole day to the thing. It’s Whisky Wednesday for the win with $15 whisky-glazed pork ribs or angus-cross sirloin and whisky cheese pairing plate. ALSO, our new fave thing is whisky and fresh apple juice, care of Cambus, and you should get on that ASAP.

Iku Yakitori Bar
The younger sibling of Mermaid’s Etsu is Iku Yakitori Bar, another Japanese restaurant serving up epic eats, a sweet interior and many a tasty whisky tipple. They’ve got all the very best whiskies on offer and barman extraordinaire Adam, who changes the cocktail menu up weekly, will be more than happy to have a yarn about each and every one of them. His knowledge is one of our favourite things about this place, closely followed by every single one of the dishes.

A back alley in Burleigh Heads is the perfect place for somewhat secret whisky bar complete with a piano and plenty of happy campers perched at the bar on the regular. Lockwood Bar stocks over 70 varieties of whisky, some of which can be whipped up into tasty cocktails and some of which are best enjoyed over ice. The boys at the bar are absolute experts so pull up a seat and ask them all of the questions.

The Scottish Prince
Younger sibling of The Cambus Wallace (seems whisky bars run in families) is The Scottish Prince, stockists of over 150 varieties of whisky, which take up 90% of their shelf space. Vintage memorabilia also reigns supreme here and it too is all dark and moody and the perfect spot for a whisky or two. There are plenty of cocktails featuring the spirit of the day but we recommend asking for one to be enjoyed neat. Don’t knock it until you try it okay.

Eddie’s Grub House
This rock ‘n roll whisky bar with more than a handful of whisky choices is Cooly’s hangout of choice for finger lickin’ fried chicken, burgers and, of course, whisky. Wait until you see Eddie’s cocktail menu featuring Freya’s Whisky Breakfast Cocktail. It’s got bacon infused Makers Mark, apple juice, orange bitters, maple syrup and egg whites, garnished with some crispy maple bacon! Always a fun time to be had at Eddie’s.
