In what may be the happiest news of all time for those who love a good hazelnut spread (everyone), Sunday the 5th of February was World Nutella Day. Just because the day is over doesn’t mean we have to stop celebrating the gooey, nutty godsend that literally whips people into a frenzy.

In honour of the day for which we are eternally grateful, here are 10 spots offering Nutella creations (listed North to South).

A dessert shop thinking outside the ‘box’

Ok let’s start this piece with a disclaimer to our dads; just sorry. And to everyone else, you’re welcome, coz this brand spanking new dessert shop gets a hard yes from us! Encouraging the GC community to open our minds and our mouths, the aptly named Cheeky Waffles invites one and all to get off (their backsides), strap-on (a smile), and enter a whole new world of naughty nosh.

The bold name is just the tip of the iceberg here, treating both the taste buds and the eyeballs to a spread of finger-licking-good genitalia-themed desserts. Pumping out the goods from its Surfers Paradise digs, Cheeky Waffles is set to become a firm fave for locals and visitors alike, and we’re srsly suckers for its stick, ah, schtick.

So, what’s the back-story you ask and here’s the long and the short of it.

Cheeky Waffles is a boner fide stroke of genius from founders (and lovers) Amanda Machado and Joshua Luna. Amanda, a Brazilian bae with an infectious smile and her pastry pro partner Joshua, came up with the juicy concept during quarantine in 2020.

Determined not to let Covid shaft their dream, one year later this dynamic duo set about erecting their first shop in Brisbane. With a passion for decadent desserts and a desire to thrust sexual wellness, inclusion, and acceptance into the spotlight, the Cheeky Waffles concept was a hit.

Growing rapidly thanks to word of mouth, they smashed it out of the park in BrisVegas and decided to open a second takeaway shop here on the GC.

Being the heart of an ever-evolving city and home to unique culinary experiences, culture and art, fun, and adrenalin-fueled adventures, it was a natural fit for their waffles…and saucy, spunky swagger.

The multi-talented Joshua is also the Head Chef cum Interior Designer and dads if you’re still there, that IS how it’s spelt in this context #HowCouldWeResist?! With lots of pink (obvs), neon lighting, cute accents, and some token naughty merch, it’s everything you’d want from a pecker and cha-cha slinging waffle house.

Created using only the very highest quality ingredients, we have big love for the goodies they put out. Plus they don’t source their chocolates from any Tom, Dick or Harry, but from the finest chocolatiers in Belgium guaranteeing an orgasmic flavour.

First base is picking your private part; a budgie smuggler (minus the smuggler…) or a lady garden, and we are equal parts giggly and impressed by the attention to life-like detail. Then, choose your waffle from milk chocolate, white chocolate, dark chocolate, caramel, strawberry, or rainbow coz k’noath #LoveIsLove.

Next, said waffle will be dipped in smooth, wet chocolate before the climax; your choice of topping for the ultimate happy ending.

And, because they know people like to watch, Amanda and Josh encourage you to film your Cheeky Waffle experience and bonus, it’s a guaranteed ‘like’ generator on your socials #UltimateFoodPorn.

Collaborating with like-minded brands and events sharing their vision of an equal and empowered society, this is certainly a concept we can all get behind. From the absolutely d-lish signature waffles to the equally popular dick shots, you honestly can’t help but love the energy, originality and fun factor of Cheeky Waffles.

And LBH, Amanda and Josh had some serious, well, balls, bringing their vision to reality #respect. So stimulate your senses and swing in for a nibble and lots of laughs. It’s the full package.

Meet Christina Baker

Christina Baker aka The Cookie Lady is as sweet as her wares. Christina, the founder of Gold Coast Cookies, went from making cookies in her apartment kitchen to stocking over 1000 cafes and venues nationwide throughout Australia in three years! A bona fide COVID success story, we chatted to her about how she made the move from looking after our teeth, to helping destroy them #gimmeallthecookies. Jokes aside, we also quizzed Christina on what she loves about the Gold Coast and her business advice for budding entrepreneurs.

How long have you been a Gold Coast local?
I have been a Gold Coast local for just over 3 years now! It has been my dream for many years to live in the most beautiful and awesome place in the world. After living in the UK and USA prior, I can 100% say that the GC is the best!

What do you love the most about the Gold Coast?
Besides the perfect weather, chilled out vibe and world class beaches, I just love the variety of things to do 7 days a week. It is a blessing to have so many amazing things in one small place, no weekend is dull and there is so much to see. I love it!

Tell us a bit about yourself.
Personally, I grew up in Phoenix, Arizona in the USA for most of my life. I am passionate about cookies & everything business, any Cavoodle dog (my own dog is called Cookie haha) and lastly, my faith as a Christian!

I am passionate about helping causes that fight human trafficking and slavery around the world, we donate a percentage of profits from Gold Coast Cookies to an organisation called Destiny Rescue, which fights human trafficking globally. Be sure to check out the amazing work they are doing!

Professionally, I used to work in the dental industry as a Dental Hygienist. Quite ironic! Ha! This was before realising that world needed better cookies. I was led to selling my cookies as people at home were obsessed with them and always told me I should start a business! Here we are now.

For those that don’t know what is Gold Coast Cookies?
Gold Coast Cookies is a cookie business started from my apartment kitchen in 2020. Since then we have grown to sell to over 1000 cafes and venues across Australia in less than 3 short years! Still pinching myself.

People know our brand to be the best handmade, filled and gourmet cookies available for wholesale. They are soft and use only the best ingredients, which makes them stand out from the rest.

How did Gold Coast Cookies come about?
After growing up in America… I have always absolutely loved cookies! But I could never find what I called the ”perfect” one! I decided it was my turn to give it ago. So after many recipe trials, I found the cookie recipe that I absolutely love!

Starting with a cookie stall in Coolangatta, Gold Coast, I sold out almost every day!

But then the Covid-19 pandemic hit and shopping centers closed. To bring happiness to people’s doors in lockdown, I delivered cookie boxes to people’s doors with free delivery throughout the lockdown. Before I knew it, everyone was sharing it on their social media and I had my first cafe message me to stock them in their cafe!

The rest is history.

As an entrepreneur, what are the biggest challenges you have faced?
Every single day as an entrepreneur is pretty much filled with new challenges if you are focused on growth. The biggest challenges have mostly come from doing what it takes to getting new customers. It is a crucial skill if you want to have a good business.

What is the best piece of business advice that you have ever been given?
“Sales cures all” is a good and true one because when you listen to the market, your business starts to become real. It is very easy to be distracted or working hard on things that don’t affect growth. But if you focus on sales, I have found it all starts to come together and everything you do has a real purpose.

What are your Gold Coast favourites…
Café/coffee spot: Cooly Food Culture in Coolangatta
Restaurant: Indian Curry Kingdom in Coolangatta
Bar or place for a drink: Addictea in Harbour Town (seriously best bubble tea in the world!)
Beach: North Kirra/Bilinga Beach

How do you choose to spend your days off?
I love to spend a lot of time on the beach with my husband and Cavoodle dog. I also love eating out at local spots in the Southern GC, spending lots of time in the sun and reading in the evening!

There’s a new Tarte in town!

Tarte Market (Image: © 2022 Inside Gold Coast)
Tarte Market (Image: © 2022 Inside Gold Coast)

If you’re a southern Gold Coaster, you’ve been to Tarte Bakery Café (on repeat. Like twice daily…). You’ve knocked back a Cookie Cup, soaked up its Soho vibes and Parisian style people watching, plus grabbed your fair share of NYC inspired sweets or savoury snacks from the Tarte takeaway window. In fact, even if you’re not from the southside, there’s a pretty good chance you’ve either been, or heard your friends lusting over all things Tarte (and had that fleeting “are we talking makeup or the café?!” moment, before correctly landing on the latter).

This crowd pleaser’s celeb status extends far and wide and when you’re on a good thing, why not make it even better? Not possible we hear you say, but when we tell you about the newest Tarte in town; Tarte Market, you’ll eat your words…and its entire menu! And you won’t feel even a twinge of guilt because it’s the health-conscious member of this GC luminary triple threat, set to level up the Tarte empire another notch.

Taking over the Thai restaurant next door, owner, boss babe, and hospitality guru, Chloe Watts, has done it again. With New York and Parisian influences, Tarte Market is in theme with her older sisters, yet offers an entirely unique eating experience. Focussing on all things healthy, clean, and beach-bod-friendly, we’re invited to go against the rule and actually make friends with salad. These aren’t just any salads either, made fresh to order with the option of including as many house-made add-ons as your tastebuds desire. That’s right, in addition to a few drool-worthy combos listed on the menu such as the Healthy ‘Risotto’ (yes, this is still a salad), you can fully customise your very own creation!

Freestyle your protein with the likes of maple hot smoked salmon, smoked brisket, lemongrass grilled chicken, poached chicken, and for a slightly naughty slant on an otherwise nourishing feed, fried chicken. Non-meat-eaters and vegans, never fear as you can also DIY with tofu, and tarragon and sage mushrooms. Salad never looked so good!

Other ingredients include quinoa and black rice, brown rice, wombok, kale, avocado, green papaya, spring onion, silver beet, broccoli, cauliflower, pickled cauliflower, shaved brussel sprouts, caramelised onion, goats fetta, halloumi, free range eggs, crispy chick peas, almonds, pine nuts, and pistachio dukkah to name a few. Then coz you can, add your fave herbs like Vietnamese mint, dill, chives, parsley, and coriander (controversial…but we’re firmly pro this divisive super herb).

If you’re thirsty, order a freshly made smoothie, like the Berry Smoothie, with blueberry, raspberry, strawberry and honey. Or, the one that made us go weak at the knees, the Lychee Smoothie which is all about the lychee! Plus there are design your own fresh juices, top notch coffee, a variety of teas, a Parisian Hot Chocolate, and a selection of exclusive Tarte Drinks. We’re drawn to the Old Fashioned Lemonade and of course, the Cookie Shot with steamed vanilla bean milk. Oh, and there are some cheeky alcoholic beverages if you’re feeling that way inclined (we are), like the Grande Mimosa with fresh OJ and the Hard Southern Iced Tea with vodka. Bottoms up!

Tarte Market (Image: © 2022 Inside Gold Coast)

And if you happen to be hit with a case of in-house Tarte FOMO (defined as frequenting your chosen Tarte, but deciding you actually want a piece of the other Tarte/s), relax – you can order from all three menus at either the bakery, the takeaway window or the new market. But here’s a hot tip: if you want to DIY salad (and not order from their set combos), you need to actually go to the Tarte Market window.

So for a delicious, healthy Tarte-a-licious salad experience with the option to freestyle your feed, cease-ar the moment and head to Tarte Market. Be-leaf us, you won’t be disappointed.
