Also known as the Spring Festival, Chinese New Year is the most important (and colourful) cultural events of the year. Celebrations often last up to two weeks and that is our kind of party.
This year is the year of everyone’s favourite animal, the dog, so it’s definitely one to get involved in.
Here are 10 Gold Coast events to celebrate the Chinese New Year (from north to south).
On Sunday, February 18 The Marine Village will be alight with activities from calligraphy, lantern painting, face painting and a giant jumping castle. Fireworks will light up the sky on Friday the 16th and traditional lion dancing will take over the streets. Dragon Cove Chinese Restaurant will also host a Chinese New Year Banquet for $78 per person.

Chinatown Street Markets
Enjoy an authentic Asian food experience with family and friends at the Chinatown Street Markets, which will come alive with Asian culture, children’s activities and entertainment. The free event will feature a delicious Asian street food market, superb local restaurants, live music and cultural entertainment, children’s activities, film screening, pop up laneway bar and a spectacular fireworks display.

Waves Buffet Restaurant
Nothing says Chinese New Year like a team of Asian chefs preparing steamed dumplings, tasty duck pancakes or sizzling seafood sliced, diced and prepared with noodles and Chinese greens. It all happens right before your eyes when Waves Buffet Restaurant welcomes Chinese New Year and the Year of the Dog. At the live cooking stations, chefs will whip up sizzling prawns, mussels and squid with Shanghai noodles and Chinese vegetables. Eat it all for just $68 per person.

Gold Coast Turf Club
Get excited for the first Chinese-themed race day in South East Queensland’s history. The racecourse will be decked out with Chinese emblems, symbols and lots of red and gold! Racegoers will experience one of the most important dates in Chinese culture while also providing the local Chinese community with an opportunity to celebrate and learn more about the racing industry. Free general admission at the gate on the day with all attendees being able to join in on the celebrations with a host of Chinese themed entertaining and dining experiences.

Chinese Lions and a Chinese Dragon will parade throughout the markets on Sunday February 18. Watch the colourful dance performance as they weave through the crowds and dance to the traditional Chinese drum. For those wishing to attract good luck, fortune and joy for 2018, the placement of a lucky red envelope with a gold coin into the lion or dragon’s mouth is more than welcome.
