Five reasons locals love Mermaid Beach

It’s the destination we all know and love. Relaxed, a little bit retro and constantly surprising us with new places to eat and play.

It's the much-loved suburb that flies under the radar when visitors come to town but to locals, it’s pure magic.

To show our love for the beachside beauty, here are five things we locals love about Mermaid Beach.

Bowls Club Night Markets

Mermaid’s Night Markets are a relatively new addition to the suburbs’ social scene. Combining lawn bowls, food trucks and cold beer, they are a locals dream come true.

Gather the crew and head down every Saturday night for live music, market stalls and of course, a little friendly competition among compadres.

There are plenty of places to park your cruiser so mark that bad boy in your calendar and let the good times bowl.

Squid Meat Disco

Every month Aprés Surf presents Squid Meat Disco, a raucous, musical event featuring outrageous costumes, DJ’s and plenty of good times.

With a serious lack of such things on the Gold Coast, Squid Meat Disco has become a favourite amongst locals keen to dance, drink and make questionable decisions.

Aprés Surf is a self-described ‘friendly neighbourhood kitchen and bar with an eclectic coastal theme’. It’s chill, welcoming vibes draw locals from up and down the Coast, all of whom gather for a night of squid meat whenever the opportunity arises.

The Borrowed Nursery

Never before has a plant nursery gained such a cult-like following so quickly (or perhaps ever).

The Borrowed Nursery draws plant lovers and photographers in droves due to its Instagram-worthy aesthetics and bespoke greenery.

While you can certainly purchase the potted petals for your humble abode, you may also like to hire them for an event (which is quite the concept if you ask us).

The stunning space also hosts workshops and yoga classes amongst the leafy greens but if that’s not your jam at least pop in for some healthy retail therapy and an Insta-snap.

Little Mermaid

There’s a lot to be said about infusing a space with tropical, feel good vibes and Little Mermaid, on the highway, has done exactly that.

Decked out with plenty of greenery, a laidback beachy feel and tons of space for all your friends the bar and restaurant, open for breakfast lunch and dinner is, more often than not, overflowing with folks having the time of their lives.

Little Mermaid has earned the love of locals for their tasty eats, creative cocktails and cool aesthetic but even better is feeling of being among friends, no matter who you are.

19Karen Contemporary Art Space

Tucked away in a back alley (as most cool, creative spaces are) is Mermaid’s premiere contemporary gallery, 19Karen.

The stunning space is filled with bold, bright pieces by both new and established artists and has all the swagger (and then some) of a boutique gallery you’d find in Melbourne or Sydney.

Exhibitions rotate, ranging in style and genre from pop culture, surrealism, realism, street art, abstraction and to the still undefined making it a favourite spot for the culture lovers and those looking to expand their knowledge on all things art.

So Mermaid, it’s the place to be whether you’ve got your dancing shoes on, need some fresh oxygenated air or perhaps a fresh perspective on the Coast.

On your bike.
