Did you know that Australians consume an average of 12 meat pies each per year? No wonder, it's Australia's national dish and the ideal snack for on the go (also the perfect hangover cure)! But pie is not just pie, there is an art to it, and we tested them all to bring you our list of the top pie shops on the Coast.
1. Coolangatta Pie Shop, 50 Griffith Street Coolangatta
Cooly Pie Shop has been around for over 50 years and is the oldest pie shop in Coolangatta. What we love most about them? They're conveniently open 24/7 on weekends making them the perfect spot to satisfy your late night cravings after a big night out on the town!
2. Kirra Beach Bakery, 48 Musgrave Street Kirra
Kirra Beach Bakery is, as the name suggests, located right on the Beach on Musgrave Street in Kirra and you've probably driven past this gem plenty of times. How about you stop next time and check out their award winning pies! Rumour has it their steak and pea pie is the best in all of Australia!
3. Sticky Buns Bakery and Cafe, 496 Golden Four Drive Tugun
They might as well be called Sticky Pie Bakery, cause as far as we are concerned that's what they do best! It's an absolute locals favourite and a well kept secret. All goods are baked daily on premise using only the freshest ingredients.
4. Goldsteins Bakery, various locations
This legendary family owned and operated bakery/ pie shop has been perfecting the art of making pies since 1944 and they're still going strong. You have the choice between traditional flavours like steak and mushroom or if you're a bit of a pie connoisseurs, how about a Malaysian lamb curry pie? With over 12 bakeries they're represented in Helensvale all the way south towards Currumbin.
5. Quinney's, 32 Taree Street Burleigh Heads
One word comes to mind when trying to describe Quinney's pies: YUUUUMMM!
This gourmet pie shop is tucked away in Burleigh's industrial area just off Taree Street. All pies are freshly made in house by no other then Tony Quinn (the king of pies) himself. If you're not convinced go check them out and judge for yourself, we highly recommend the butter chicken pie for only $5.90.
6. Ed Baker, 5 Flagstone Drive Burleigh Heads
We are letting you in on a secret here guys! Ed Baker is an Inside Gold Coast top pick and if you ask us maybe even the best on the Coast.
Only the freshest ingredients make the cut using organic flour and free-range eggs cause at Ed Baker they believe in the basics!
Choose between five delicious flavours like the chicken and leek pie with premium chicken braised with fresh leek in a delicious creamy sauce.
7. Paddock Bakery, 20 Hibiscus Haven Burleigh Heads
The King amongst all bakeries has to be Paddock Bakery. From artisan bread to doughnuts and, of course, pies, they've got it all! The always evolving menu includes delicacies such as authentic butter chicken pies and sausage rolls, oh so yummy!
8. Foster's Bakery, 2227 Gold Coast Hwy Nobby Beach
It doesn't get much more original then Foster's Bakery in Nobbys. The family run shop is every locals favourite and has been serving up some of the best pies on the Coast for a looong, long time!
An absolute 'must-try' is the lamb and rosemary pie, once an Australia Day special that was so popular they had to keep it on the menu.
9. BKRY4217, 10 Beach Road Surfers Paradise
Just by looking at the fairly simple yet super trendy sign "BKRY" it is clear that they don't just offer you any pie! The artisan bakery prides itself on dishing up amazing pastries, sausage rolls and specialty pies.
Forget the traditional and 'boring' and think sweet potato, ricotta or pulled pork! Made from scratch daily from locals for locals, enjoy!
10. Horner's of Sorrento, 20 Bundall Road, Sorrento
Conveniently located on Bundall Road in Sorrento is Horner's Bakery. What are they known for? Golden brown, flaky pastry and hot, meaty fillings! They definitely deserve a spot amongst the top pies on the Coast. If you're still hungry after that pie do yourself a favour and try some of their sweet treats, they are THAT good!
11. The Main Beach Bakery, 24 Tedder Avenue Main Beach
The Main Beach Bakery has been around for a while, 40 years to be precise. A lot has changed since Nathan Swadling took over about two years ago. Ever heart of a Jack Daniel pie? We certainly haven't.
So, if you're intrigued, make your way over to Tedder Ave and try some of Nathan's creations.
12. Yatala Pie Shop, 48 Old Pacific Hwy Yatala
Those guys don't really need an introduction, they are famous beyond our shores and people would kill for a pie from Yatala. Located right on the M1 with a drive through that’s good for a quick fix, Yatala Pie Shop has been a Queensland landmark for over 130 years. On the menu is every pie imaginable like the steak pie, chicken and curry pies and even vegetarian pies.
13. The Outpost Cafe, 44 Christie Street Canungra
Theoretically they're not on the Coast but we all love the Hinterland and their pies are definitely worth the trip to Canungra.
The Outpost Cafe offers over 12 different pies as well as some delicious sausage rolls and for only $25 you get a sweet as family pack including any four pies and 2 sausage rolls to take home (or devour them right there, we won't blame you!).
14. The Kai Kitchen and Kai Kart, 7 Waterway Drive Coomera
I know we said pies are as Australian as can be but apparently Kiwi's make a good pie too and they can prove it! The Kiwi Bakery better known as The Kai Kitchen and Kai Kart in Coomera is amongst the top contender for best pies on the Coast!
They started off with a food truck and due to popular demand had to open a commercial kitchen (they are still selling out on a daily basis, so get in quick!).
15. Humble Pie Bakery, 1 Mogo Place Billinudgel
Another road trip worthy pie shop is Billinudgel's Humble Pie Bakery. Located on the Pacific Highway in northern NSW, Humble Pie has grown to become an institution amongst locals and travellers alike. Why is that you ask? Well, the family run business has operated since 1982 and has continuously tried to perfect the art of making pies and we think they're pretty damn close to perfection!
