Once voted the most the most popular man in America and admired as a successful as a cartoonist, radio & television host, and amateur anthropologist, Robert Ripley spent his life fascinated with the worlds oddities, and travelled to over 200 countries collecting the worlds more obscure artifacts.
After assembling a collection worthy of museum display, Mr. Ripley opened his first museum in Chicago.
As his collections grew, so did the museums. Opening several in America, it wasn't long before Mr. Ripley’s most unusual collection was being showcased in Ripley’s Believe It or Not! Odditoriums all over the world.
Enter the world of Ripley’s Believe It or Not Odditorium, Surfers Paradise. An interactive museum filled with oddities so, well, odd, that you’ll find yourself wondering, is this real, or a white lie?
Perfect for a day out with the family, this museum filled with fun facts you wont believe are actually true!
From the jovial and wacky exterior, I had always considered it more of a tourist attraction than a museum, but don’t be like me and let the exterior fool you! The amount of weird odd and unbelievable historical artifacts held in the surprisingly large venue, is astounding.
As I walked down the stairs into the cellar of oddities, the attraction begins with several displays that enhance the weird and wonderful facts about the people they were portraying.
Take the king who would spend $375,000 a day in food, shown lounging on a day bed, I couldn't help but think today, he would be the king of Netflix and chill!! 'Believe it or not, he starved his mother to death to fulfill a prophecy that he would rule the world'. #SMH
Room after room was filled with some of the most interesting and unique artifacts in the world! Have you ever seen a shrunken head? How about crickets painted like Michael Jackson or an executioners axe? A two-headed baby? Yeah me either. Who knew such an unbelievable collection lived right here on the Gold Coast?!
Although each room is filled with museum worthy artifacts, there are also interactive stations. Pull the chains to talk to the pirate, touch the face of the skeleton if you dare, or listen to the deer on the wall tell you a story.
Not much for listening you say? Test your skills in the laser room. Think you can get through the maze without hitting a laser beam? Are you a ninja? Bring your friends and family in to see if they can twist and turn their way to the other end of the obstacle course without setting off the lasers. Clumsily I hit the lasers, but had a great time trying not to!
It’s true some of the most amazing things in the world are housed at Ripley’s Believe It or Not! Odditorium, but so are things from out of this world. Ripley has even collected meteorites from outer space!!
Another noteworthy attraction was the tiny tunnel for kids. I may or may not have wiggled my way through the tiny space checking out the artwork on the tiny walls. Ok, so I did, but It was worth it!
The final attraction inside Ripley’s is the dance room. Loud pop music fills the air as cameras filmed my every move painting light drawings on the screen in front of me. Finally, the music video I had always wanted!
Believe it or not, this wacky place is worth the drive to the heart of Surfers Paradise.
Once you visit, you’ll have to write to us and tell us if you can roll your tongue. (Inside joke, it’ll make more sense once you go).
Put it in your pocket for a rainy day, for when you just need a little bit of fun.
