Beer, bao's and more beer...

What do you get when you put together two guys with a love of beer and Asian cuisine? You get something with a bit of Backbone, an Asian tapas bar fit for friends, family and good times. 

Owners Chris Wormald, originally from the UK and Brisbane butcher Ben France knew they were onto something sweet (without the sour) when they came up with the concept of Backbone. Somewhere for "beer, food, friends and family. Palm Beach is exploding, but now it's Tugun's turn.

Offering communal seating both inside and out, the industrial styled fit out with its modest touches of Asian styling is inviting to all. Sleek timber tables, a jade tiled feature wall, concrete floors and a cleverly crafted concrete slab bar. The guys have kept it simple and homely thanks to the Asian ornaments from Chris's childhood travels through Korea.

But now let's move onto the good stuff, food and beer! A lot of local beer to be precise, Backbone Bar have a great relationship with the guys at Black Hops Brewery and are offering a decent selection of their finest brews, as well as Currumbin Valley Brewing and Balter which are located just down the road. These guys are all about the keg turn over,to always ensure they are offering the best. Not as much of a beer drinker? Try the preservative free wines on offer; the Liquid Rock 'n' Roll Rose goes ever so well with the Pork Bao.

So you've got your beer sorted, your thirst is quenched, now it's the tricky issue of deciding what to eat. Have no fear, here are a few suggestions to help you along the way (chopsticks optional). Dumpling lovers, the Wonton Dumplings are a delight, pork and kim chi served with a shimjei mushroom short soup. Bao enthusiasts, try the Pork Bao with pickled daikon, asian herbs and goma caramel. Ribs.. the must try item on the menu, Pot Roasted Beef Short Ribs with chilli caramel, cabbage slaw and citrus aioli. Basically you're likely to want one of everything from the menu, but if you're just feeling peckish try the Chicken Karaage or Edamame.

Get the friends and family together for a beer and bao and come say Hai.
