Institution Ale House

Institution Ale House

It’s smack dab in the middle of Surfers Paradise but you gotta know what you are looking for!

One of the Gold Coast's coolest hangouts is perched on the second floor of the Hilton Building facing Surfers Paradise Blvd. Keep your eyes peeled for the escalator that will take you to this beer lover's paradise.

Institution Ale House has it all. It’s got the atmosphere, the friendly staff, the good food, and a great drink selection.

As I came up the escalator I took a spin around the restaurant. It’s huge and totally cool! There is an outdoor seating area fitted with bar height and picnic tables. Also, the outdoor seating area is hidden behind the building’s exterior design which makes it perfect for people watching. Infront of the bar are more bar height tables. To the side of a bar are booths made private by chain curtains and feature huge graffiti murals by artist Drapl. The other side of the bar has plenty of seating and is tucked away just enough that it's perfect for parties and functions.

I settled in and ordered lunch. I went with the special of the day, Burgers & Brews. For only twenty bucks you get a burger and a paddle with a selection of 4 beers.

The burger was bomb! Fluffy bun, pepper jack cheese, big fat juicy meat patty and crunchy greens. Oh and it had all the yummy condiment fixins! Melt in your mouth goodness!

The beers deserve a blog of their own. I’m not sure how many beers Institution has in total, but it's heaps!

I tried four, as per the paddle - They were laid out light to dark. First was the Institution Easy Ale. It was just that, easy. Super smooth and easy to drink, a beer everyone can get on board with. Next was Noisy Minor Saison Froment, crisp and fruity beginning with a smoky clove finish, a very well rounded beer. From there I tried 4 Pines Pale Ale. It was a classic tasting pale ale, hoppy, and full flavoured. Very delicious! I finished with Murray’s Dark Knight Porter. A great ending choice, full bodied with a bittersweet chocolate finish.

This Burger and Brews combo was perfect ending to an afternoon and the perfect start to the evening. The burger was big enough that I couldn't even finish it, and the beers got me buzzed enough to slide seamlessly into the evening.

I left Institution Ale House feeling full and happy. You can't really ask for much more than that from an Ale House can you?! A+ in my book!
