9 of the best gin cocktails at local bars

Every second Saturday in June we celebrate World Gin Day, a great excuse to get your mates together and drink yourself around the Coast's Gin loving bars.

We’re not solely here to encourage your drinking habit though we also want to educate you. Did you know gin and tonic first gained popularity in the British colonies as the quinine in the tonic water was found to be a potent deterrent to malaria-carrying mosquitoes? The bitterness of the quinine, however, was unpalatable, so gin was added to make the drink taste better. And doesn’t it taste good these days!

Here you have the nine best spots to get your gin fix this Saturday:

FIX Bar
A must-visit cocktail bar in Surfers Paradise, FIX at the Hilton, is the city’s sexiest spot for a great night out, capturing the seductive style and glamour of the 1920's prohibition era with a unique selection of cocktails and premium spirits. For World Gin Day try the Garden of Eve made up of Beefeater Dry Gin, elderflower syrup, apple liqueur and apple juice.
Location: The Hilton, 6 Orchid Ave, Surfers Paradise

The Island Rooftop
You might want to start the International Gin Day celebrations early this year. The Island Rooftop bar is bringing you Gin and Jazz Thursdays! Tonic takes over the rooftop from 6.30 pm every Thursday night. Sip on some gin, devour some southern inspired food and listen to the sounds of Tonic. Our recommendation: The Island Cup made with Beefeater Gin, elderflower cordial, red grapes, pressed green apple, lemon, mint and soda.
Location: 3128 Surfers Paradise Blvd, Surfers Paradise

BiN 89
The flagship restaurant of the BiN empire, BiN 89 is about to launch a brand new cocktail menu featuring not one but five gin-based cocktails. Start with Berried Alive which is a lot less menacing than it sounds and made with Gin, Chambord and sparkling wine. Secondly go for The Fresh Prince which lives up to its name with Cucumber Gin, lime juice and basil leaves. Really though, why not get down there and try them all.
Location: 89-91 Surf Pde, Broadbeach

Hank Dining and Bar
Hank has been created to combine a love of gin with a passion for food and all things fun and it’s guaranteed to fix your gin cravings. Located in the heart of the Broadbeach Mall, Hank boasts a modern, quirky bar and relaxed outdoor area with a focus on the broad range of gins available from around the world. You’re spoilt for choice here but we recommend trying the Ginger Mule; ginger infused Bombay Sapphire Gin, fresh lime, sugar, ginger beer and bitters.
Location: 15 Victoria Ave, Broadbeach

Tamborine Mountain Distillery
Tucked away on Mount Tamborine is one of Australia's smallest and most unique distilleries with over 280 International Awards. Michael and his wife Alla use traditional copper pot stills and fruit plucked fresh from the mountain to produce an exquisite array of liqueurs, schnapps, vodkas and, of course, gin. Their gold medal award winning gin is the Lilly Pilly Gin, a pot still gin using botanicals such as Australian Lilly Pilly (Riberry), Juniper, Angelica root, Orris root, Citrus peel, Caraway, Coriander, Aniseed Myrtle, Elderflower, Mistletoe, Passionflower, Shepherd’s Purse and more. The best part about it, it's got a delightful pink hue.
Location: 87-91 Beacon Road, North Tamborine

Bam Bam Bakehouse
Like your gin in an edible form? No problem. Bam Bam Bakehouse, the masters of all things sweet, have created the Ink Gin & Tonic Choux Bomb, available this Saturday and Sunday. It's choux pastry, lemon creme patissiere with Ink Gin's botanicals, lemon and gin curd, topped with a vanilla chantilly mini choux, tonic glaze and a G&T candied lemon... yum! It not only looks delicious, it tastes amazing too. Make sure you pre-order ‘cause they won't last.
Location: 2519 - 2521 Gold Coast Highway, Mermaid Beach (opposite Sizzler)

Glenelg Public House
You won't find anything that's not done well in this super cool and intimate gastro pub. The low lit fit out makes it the perfect atmosphere to enjoy a couple of gins this Saturday. How about the Butterfly Kiss made with 18 Ink Gin, Campari, Paraiso, lemon, orange bitters and fever tree tonic. It’s a great companion to a perfectly cooked steak!
Location: 2460 Gold Coast Hwy, Mermaid Beach

Wildernis
A Mediterranean-inspired space with wide windows opening out to reveal the beach below, tons of natural light flooding in from every direction (including the retractable roof) and a secret laneway, Wildernis Bar and Café is the Coast’s new go-to for communal dining and cocktails. Why hit them up for World Gin Day? Well, they serve Ink Gin on tap! Yes, you heard right, what are you waiting for.
Location: Cnr Gold Coast Hwy and Seventh Ave, Palm Beach

San Sebastian
Live music, Spain’s traditional Pinxtos and an atmosphere akin to an energetic European holiday, San Sebastian brings vibrant, high energy dining to Palm Beach. Of course, Spanish-inspired cocktails also grace the menu. The Lady Marmalade hits the spot, think gin, a slap of basil and lime marmalade, all shaken. Salut!
Location: 1089 Gold Coast Highway, Palm Beach (between Sixth and Seventh Ave on the beach side).
